The efficiency of production system is mainly considered in the viewpoints of reducing the average flow time of products and increasing the throughput rate. The performance in these viewpoints is very depending on job dispatching of each machine in real time operation, in the case jobs are released dynamically. In this research, a heuristic dynamic dispatching method is suggested for a flow shop case where new jobs with random process times are released by an interarrival time distribution and the number of waiting jobs between each pair of machines are limited. The proposed method has been compared with some priority rule-based dispatching methods by simulation and found to be superior to them.
This paper is an exploratory study about perceived risks related to career women's fashion lifestyles in case of catalogue shopping. Three research questions are proposed: 1. The first is to examine the types of career women's fashion lifestyles. 2. The second is to find out the kinds of perceived risks when career women purchase fashion apparels through catalogues. 3. The third is to investigate the relationships between fashion lifestyles and perceived risks. The empirical results were as follows. First, career women's fashion lifestyles were distinctively divided into the fashion-oriented group, the casual preference group, and the brand-name preference group. Second, seven unique perceived risks such as socio-psychological perceived risks, product assortment perceived risks, quality/function perceived risks, customer services & conveniences perceive risks, economic perceived risks, and order waiting-time perceived risks were manifested when career women purchase fashion apparels using catalogues. Finally, significant differences in socio-psychological perceived risks, product assortment perceived risks, and quality/function perceived risks were shown among fashion lifestyle clusters. However, the others were not.
This paper deals with an operation concept of "time-transfer of buses", in which buses arrive a transfer center at the same time and allow passengers to transfer to other bus lines, so that passengerscan go anywhere all the timed-transfere buses operate with only one transfer. This timed-transfer bus system is known as an efficient operating technique which can be adopted in an area with sparsely distrubuted bus demand. A model of timed-transfer is estabilished in terms of vaious factors such as the expected(or average) arrival time, distribution of arrival time, timed-transfer cycle, shceduled departure time, etc. It is assumed that the objective of timed-transfer bus system is to minimize the total transfer waiting time. The optimal schedualed arrival time or buffer time(time required to arrive ealy in consideration of delay) is analyzed for a general case and various speicial cases. It was found that the optiaml buffer time is an inverse funcion of the timed-transfer cycl and increases with the cycle time, assumin g that there is a fixed scheduled departure time at the transfer cetner regardless of whether one or more buses fail to arrive before the scheduled departure time. If buses are to wait uhtil all the buses arrive at the transfer center, that is, the transfer departure time is vairable, the optimal scheduled arrival times can be obtained by a mathmatical programming.

This research identifies the ingress to egress primary factors that causes a patient to receive delayed emergency medical care. This material was collected between February 1st to 28th, 1998. Research envolved 4,118 people who visited the college emergency medical center in Kyeongido Province, South Korea. Medical records were examined, using the retrospective method. to determine the length of stay and the main cause for waiting. Results are as follows : 1. The age group with the highest admission rate was 10 and under, approximately 1,394 (33.9%). Followed by an even distribution for ages between 11-50 at 10-15% for their respective ranges. The lowest admission rate was 50 years and above. 2. From the 4,118 records examined, 3,489 received outpatient treatment (84.7%); 601 were admitted for inpatient care (14.6%); 25 arrived dead on arrival (0.6%); and 4 people died at the hospital. 3. Between 7PM to 12AM, 42.9% were admitted to the EMC. The hours from 9PM to 11PM recorded the highest admission rate and 5AM to 8AM was the lowest From 8PM to 12AM, the most beds were occupied. 4. For most patients. the average length of stay was approximately 2.2 hours. By medical department, external medicine was the longest for 2.8 hours. Pediatrics was the shortest for 1.6 hours. The average waiting period for inpatient admission was 2.6 hours. Inpatient admission for pediatrics and external medicine was 3.4 hours and 2.2 hours respectively. 5. Theses are primary factors for delay at EMC: 1) pronged medical consultations to decide between inpatient versus outpatient treatment, and delaying to be inpatient, 2) when you call physicians they are delayed to come 3) Understaffing during peak or critical hours, 4) Excessive consulting with different medical departments, 5) some patients require longer monitoring periods, 6) medical records are delayed in transit between departments, 7) repeated laboratory tests make delay the result, 8) overcrowded emergency x-ray place causes delay taking x-ray and portable x-ray, 9) the distance between EMC and registration and cashier offices is too far. 10) hard to control patient's family members. The best way to reduce EMC waiting and staying time is by cooperation between departments, both medical and administrative. Each department must work beyond their job description or duty and help each other to provide the best medical service and satisfy the patient needs. The most important answer to shortened the EMC point from ingress to egress is to see things from a patient point of view and begin from there to find the solution.

This study involves an analytical approach to determine transit dispatching schedules (headways) Determining a time schedule is an important process in transit system planning. In general, the transit headway should be shorter during the peak hour than at non-peak hours for demand-responsive service. It allows passengers to minimize their waiting time under inelastic, fixed demand conditions. The transit headway should be longer as operating costs increase, and shorter as demand and waiting time increase. Optimal headway depends on the amount of ridership. and each individual vehicle dispatching time depends on the distribution of the ridership. This study provides a theoretical foundation for the dispatching scheme consistent with common sense. Previous research suggested a dispatching scheme with even headway. However, according to this research, that is valid for a specific case when the demand pattern is uniform. This study is a general analysis expanding that previous research. This study suggests an easy method to set a time table without a complex and difficult calculation. Further. if the time axis is changed to the space axis instead, this study could be expanded to address the spacing problems of some facilities such as roads. stations, routes and others.
This study was conducted to investigate the distribution of private medical practitioners' income from the medical insurance and its determinants. Total amount of the medical service fee paid by the medical insurance to 1,268 private clinics(767 in Taegu and 510 in Kyungpook that had been in practice at least for one year) in 1993 was compared by the characteristics of practitioner, clinic, patient and population. The practitioners in 40-49 years of age and 6-10 years inpractice had the highest income. Total income of a clinic was increased with the number of physicians, employees and equipments. The largest income differentials were observed among obstetrics and gynecology clinics and the least differentials were among pediatrics clinics. The characteristics of practitioner, clinic and population accounted for 41.7% of the total variance of income. The important determinants of income were specialty of the clinic, age of the practitioner and number of the employee and equipments. The large income differentials among clinics imply a skewed distribution of patients and thus long waiting time, inefficient utilization of manpower and inadequate quality of care. Effective measures to reduce the income differentials need to be developed.

This paper has proposed the modelling by simulation in order to evaluate the performance of process through discrete event simulation using SIMAN language in flexible manufacturing systems. The production system is assumed to be a job shop type of system under the batch production of discrete products. In this paper, the input data is the workstation(process) time, the number of workstation(process), a probability distribution, the number of simulation runs. Also, transient period is considered. In the case study, this paper deals with three products in real flexible manufacturing systems. Finally, a number of simulation runs were executed under different experimental conditions to obtain preliminary statistics on the following performance measures: operating rate of facility and average system operating rate, transient period, central processing unit, average system throughput, and average waiting time in queues.

In this paper, we consider a queueing network model. where the population constraint within each subnetwork is controlled by a semaphore queue. The total number of customers that may be present in the subnetwork can not exceed a given value. Each node has a constant service time and the arrival process to the queueing network is an arbitrary distribution. A major characteristics of this model is that the lower layer flow is halted by the state of higher layer. We present some properties that the inter-change of nodes does not make any difference to customer's waiting time in the queueing network under a certain condition. The queueing network can be transformed into a simplified queueing network. A dramatic simplification of the queueing network is shown. It is interesting to see how the simplification developed for sliding window flow control, can be applied to multi-layered queueing network.

Objectives: Aircraft cabin cleaning work is characterized by being performed within a limited time in a narrow and enclosed space. The objective of this study was to evaluate the exposure levels to dust, ultra fine dust(PM2.5) and black carbon(BC) among aircraft cabin cleaners. Methods: Active personal air sampling for respirable dust(n=73) and BC(n=47) was conducted during quick transit cleaning(cabin general and vacuum-specific) and seat cover replacement and total dust and PM2.5 were area-air-sampled as well. Also, size distribution of particle was identified with the cleaning workers targeted. Dusts were collected with PVC filters using gravimetric analysis. The concentration of PM2.5 and the particle size distribution were measured with real-time direct reading portable equipment using light scattering analysis. The concentration of BC was measured by aethalometer(filter-based real-time light absorption analysis instrument). Results: The geometric mean of respirable dust was the highest at vacuum cleaning as 74.4 ㎍/m3, following by replacing seat covers as 49.3 ㎍/m3 and cabin general cleaning as 47.8 ㎍/m3 . The arithmetic mean of PM2.5 was 4.83 ~ 9.89 ㎍/m3 inside the cabin, and 28.5~44.5 ㎍/m3 outside the cabin(from bus and outdoor waiting space). From size distribution, PM2.5/PM10 ratio was 0.54 at quick transit cleaning and 0.41 at replacing seat covers. The average concentration of BC was 2~7 ㎍/m3, showing a high correlation with the PM2.5 concentration. Conclusions: The hazards concentration levels of aircraft cabin cleaners were very similar to those of roadside outdoor workers. As the main source of pollution is estimated to be diesel vehicles operating at airports, and it is necessary to replace older vehicles, strengthen pollutant emission control regulations, and introduce electric vehicles. In addition, it is necessary to provide as part of airport-inftastructure a stable standby waiting space for aircraft cabin cleaners and introduce a systematic safety and health management system for all workers in the aviation industry.

As the organizational size of a military service or business increases and its management becomes complex, the success in its management depends less on static type of management but more on careful, dynamic type of management. In this thesis, an operations research technique is applied to the problems of determining optimal air traffic control rule and of optimal capacity of air base for a military air base. An airport runway is regarded as the service facility in a queueing mechanism, used by landing, low approach, and departing aircraft. The usual order of service gives priority different classes of aircraft such as landings, departures, and low approaches; here service disciplines are considered assigning priorities to different classes of aricraft grouped according to required runway time. Several such priority rules are compared by means of a steady-state queueing model with non-preemptive priorities. From the survey conducted for the thesis development, it was found that the flight pattern such as departure, law approach, and landing within a control zone, follows a Poisson distribution and the service time follows an Erlang distribution. In the problem of choosing the optimal air traffic control rule, the control rule of giving service priority to the aircraft with a minimum average waiting cost, regardless of flight patterns, was found to be the optimal one. Through a simulation with data collected at K-O O Air Base, the optimal take-off interval and the optimal capacity of aircraft to be employed were determined.
