The aircraft industry supports aviation by building aircraft and manufacturing aircraft parts for their maintenance. Fuel economization is one of the biggest concerns in the aircraft industry. The reduction in specific fuel consumption of aircraft can be achieved by a variety of means, simplest and more effective is the one to impose minor modifications in the aircraft main wing or the parts which are exposed to the air flow. This method can lead to a reduction in aerodynamic resistance offered by the air and have a smoother flight. The main objective of this study is to propose geometric design modifications on an existing aircraft wing which acts as a vortex generator and it can reduce the drag and increase lift to drag ratio, leading to lower fuel consumption. The NACA 2412 aircraft wing is modified and designed. Rigorous flow analysis is carried out using computational fluid dynamics based software Ansys Fluent. Results show that saw tooth modification to the main wing shows the best aerodynamic efficiency as compared to other modifications.
The projectile afterbodies for zero-lift drag reduction has been analyzed using the Navier-Stokes equations with the κ-εturbidence model. The numerical method of a second order upwind scheme has been used on an unstructured adaptive grid system. Base drag reduction methods that have been found effective on axisymmetric bodies are boattailing, base bleed, base combustion, locked vortex afterbodies and multistep afterbodies. In this paper, turbulence flow and pressure charateristics have been studied for geometries of multistep afterbodies. The important geometrical and flow parameters relevant to the design of such afterbodies have been identified by step number, length and height. The flow over multistep aftoerbodies or base have many kinds of compressible flow characteristics including expansion waves at the trailing edge, recompression waves, separation and recirculating flow in the base region, shear flow and wake flow. The numerical results have been compared and analyzed with the experimental data. The flow characteristics have been clearly shown.

Failure of tube bundles due to excessive flow-induced vibrations continues to affect the performance of nuclear power plant Early experimental studies concentrated on rigid structures and later investigators dealt with elastic structures because of their importance in many engineering fields. On the other hand, much less numerical work has been carried out, because of the numerical complexity associated with the problem. Conventional approaches usually decoupled the flow solution from the structural problem. The present numerical study proposes the methodology in analyzing the fluidelastic instability occurring in tube bundles by coupling the Computational fluid Dynamics (C%) with the tube equation of motions. The motion of the structures is modeled by a spring-damper-mass system that allows transnational motion in two directions (a two-degree-of-freedom system). The fluid motion and the cylinder response are solved in an iterative way, so that the interaction between the fluid and the structure can be accounted for property. The aim of the present work is to predict the fluidelstic instability of tube bundles and the associated phenomena, such as the response of the cylinder, the unsteady lift and drag on the cylinder, the vortex shedding frequency.

The effect of rotation on the unsteady laminar flaw past a circular cylinder is numerically investigated in the present study. The numerical solutions for the 2D Navier-Stokes equation obtained, using two different numerical methods. One is an accurate spectral method and the other is a finite volume method(FVM). First, the flaw around a stationary circular cylinder is investigated to understand the basic phenomenon of flaw separation and bluff body wake. Next, the flow characteristics of the laminar flow, past a rotating circular cylinder, are investigated, using a FVM developed in this study. By the effect of rotation, it is seen that values of lift increase, while the values of mean drag decrease. Further, the criteria of angular velocity, at which the Karman vorteces disappear, is also determined.

The present study has numerically investigated two-dimensional laminar flow over a circular cylinder with a uniform planar shear, where the free-stream velocity varies linearly across the cylinder. Numerical simulations using the immersed boundary method are performed for the ranges of $50{\le}Re{\le}160,\;K{\le}0.2$, and B=0.1 and 0.05 where Re, K and B are the Reynolds number, the non-dimensionalized velocity gradient and the blockage ratio, respectively. Results show that the flow depends significantly on B as well as Re and K. It is found, especially, that the blockage effect accounts for some causes of apparent discrepancies among previous studies on the flow. With increasing K, the vortex shedding frequency and the mean drag stay nearly constant or slightly decrease whereas the mean lift, acting from the higher-velocity side to the lower, increases linearly. Flow statistics as well as instantaneous flow fields are presented to identify the characteristics of the flow and then to understand the underlying mechanism.

Flow around an oscillating circular cylinder was experimentally investigated. With varying Keulegen-Carpenter(KC) number from 10 to 30 the flow field with vortex sheddings and the related hydrodynamic fortes exerting on the cylinder were measured. A newly developed PW(paricle image velocimetry) successfully captured the complex vortical flows varying with the KC number and the flow patterns were 'traverse street', 'single pairing' and 'double pairing' of vortices with increasing KC number, At a certain KC number range the lift force undergoes a transition showing little periodicity due to surrounding complicated shedded vortices.
Aerodynamic characteristics for a launch vehicle are numerically analyzed with various conditions. The local drag coefficients are high at the nose of the launch vehicle in subsonic region and on the main body in supersonic region because of the induced drag and the wave drag, respectively. The drag coefficients show the similar trend with the angle of attack except zero degree. However, the more the angle of attack increases, the more dependent on the Mach number the lift coefficient is. The body rotation for the flight stability destroys the vortex pair formed above the body opposite to the flight direction, so the flow fields are more or less complicated. The drag coefficient of the launch vehicle at sea level is about three times larger than that at altitude 7.2 km. And the thrust jet at the nozzle causes to reduce the drag coefficient compared with the jetless transonic flight.

The high-Reynolds number flow around a rectangular cylinder, having streamwise to crossflow length ratio equal to 5 is analyzed in the present paper. The flow is characterized by shear-layer separation from the upstream edges. Vortical structures of different size form from the roll-up of these shear layers, move downstream and interact with the classical vortex shedding further downstream in the wake. The corresponding mean flow is characterized by a recirculation region along the lateral surface of the cylinder, ending by mean flow reattachment close to the trailing edge. The mean flow features on the cylinder side have been shown to be highly sensitive to set-up parameters both in numerical simulations and in experiments. The results of 21 Large Eddy Simulations (LES) are analyzed herein to highlight the impact of the lateral mean recirculation characteristics on the near-wake flow features and on some bulk quantities. The considered simulations have been carried out at Reynolds number Re=DU_∞/ν=40 000, being D the crossflow dimension, U_∞ the freestream velocity and ν the kinematic viscosity of air; the flow is set to have zero angle of attack. Some simulations are carried out with sharp edges (Mariotti et al. 2017), others with different values of the rounding of the upstream edges (Rocchio et al. 2020) and an additional LES is carried out to match the value of the roundness of the upstream edges in the experiments in Pasqualetto et al. (2022). The dimensions of the mean recirculation zone vary considerably in these simulations, allowing us to single out meaningful trends. The streamwise length of the lateral mean recirculation and the streamwise distance from the upstream edge of its center are the parameters controlling the considered quantities. The wake width increases linearly with these parameters, while the vortex-shedding non-dimensional frequency shows a linear decrease. The drag coefficient also linearly decreases with increasing the recirculation length and this is due to a reduction of the suctions on the base. However, the overall variation of C_D is small. Finally, a significant, and once again linear, increase of the fluctuations of the lift coefficient is found for increasing the mean recirculation streamwise length.

The subsea power cables are increasingly important for harvesting renewable energies as we develop offshore wind farms located at a long distance from shore. Particularly, the continuous flexural motion of inter-array dynamic power cable of floating offshore wind turbine causes tremendous fatigue damages on the cable. As the subsea power cable consists of the helical structures with various components unlike a mooring line and a steel pipe riser, the fatigue analysis of the cables should be performed using special procedures that consider stick/slip phenomenon. This phenomenon occurs between inner helically wound components when they are tensioned or compressed by environmental loads and the floater motions. In particular, Vortex-induced vibration (VIV) can be generated by currents and have significant impacts on the fatigue life of the cable. In this study, the procedure for VIV fatigue analysis of the dynamic power cable has been established. Additionally, the respective roles of programs employed and required inputs and outputs are explained in detail. Demonstrations of case studies are provided under severely sheared currents to investigate the influences on amplitude variations of dynamic power cables caused by the excitation of high mode numbers. Finally, sensitivity studies have been performed to compare dynamic cable design parameters, specifically, structural damping ratio, higher order harmonics, and lift coefficients tables. In the future, one of the fundamental assumptions to assess the VIV response will be examined in detail, namely a narrow-banded Gaussian process derived from the VIV amplitudes. Although this approach is consistent with current industry standards, the level of consistency and the potential errors between the Gaussian process and the fatigue damage generated from deterministic time-domain results are to be confirmed to verify VIV fatigue analysis procedure for slender marine structures.

This paper describes on introduction of CASE 4(Delta Wing) for EFD-CFD comparison workshop which is in charged of aerodynamic subcommittee of The Korean Society for Aeronautical and Space Science. The wind tunnel test will be performed later, angle of attack is set -5~20deg and mach number is set 0.7, 0.85, 1.2 to solve the transonic flow. The simulation test of grid dependency is conducted to determine the proper grid size of delta wing analysis. The tendency of lift and drag coefficient is determined according to the change of angle of attack based on the selected grid size.
