In order to investigate characteristics of the von Mises yield criterion under 2 dimensional stress condition, two cases of plane strain were studied. One of which was for zero elastic strain and the other was for zero plastic strain increment. Yield functions for the plane strain condition for zero elastic strain and for the plane stress condition were represented as ellipse and the two yield functions were compared by ratios of major axis, minor axis and eccentricity and it was seen that the ratio of minor axis was the same between the two cases and the ratios of major axis and eccentricity were functions of Poisson's ratio. Region of elastic behavior obtained from considering plane strain condition of zero elastic strain increases as the Poisson's ratio increases. Yield function for plane strain obtained from considering zero plastic increment and associate flow rule was displayed as straight line and the region of elastic behavior was greater than that for the case of plane stress.

Finite-element analyses were conducted to investigate the thermal stress in 3-dimensional stacked wafers package containing through-silicon-via (TSV), which is being widely used for 3-Dimensional integration. With finite element method (FEM), thermal stress was analyzed with the variation of TSV diameter, bonding diameter, pitch and TSV height. It was revealed that the maximum von Mises stresses occurred at the edge of top interface between Cu TSV and Si and the Si to Si bonding site. As TSV diameter increased, the von Mises stress at the edge of TSV increased. As bonding diameter increased, the von Mises stress at Si to Si bonding site increased. As pitch increased, the von Mises stress at Si to Si bonding site increased. The TSV height did not affect the von Mises stress. Therefore, it is expected that smaller Cu TSV diameter and pitch will ensure mechanical reliability because of the smaller chance of plastic deformation and crack initiation.

Dynamic crack initiation in ductile steel is investigated by means of impact loaded 3 point bend(PB) specimens. Results from non-viscoplastic and viscoplastic materials are compared. Their materials are applied with various impact velocities and static strain rates. The specimen has the size 320${\times}$750 mm with a thickness of 10 mm. A modified 3PB specimen design with reduced width at the ends has been developed in order to avoid the initial compressive load of the crack tip and also to avoid the uncertain boundary conditions at the impact heads. Numerical simulations are made by using the FEM code ABAQUS. Therefore, their results are plotted by shapes of the von Mises plastic stress and equivalent plastic strain of the specimens applied by various impact velocities.

Dynamic fracture is investigated in plate applied by impacting bar. Numerical simulations of the experiments are made by using a finite element method(FEM) code, LS-DYNA. The eroding surface-to-surface contact allows between impacting bar and impacted plate. The occurrence of hourglass deformations in an analysis can invalidate results and hourglass energy is minimized to obtain the good accuracy of result. Total, internal and kinetic energies, von Mises plastic stress and X,Y,Z velocities of impacting bar are analyzed in this study.

Plastic behaviors, based on the von Mises yield criterion, of circular discs containing a purely elastic, circular inclusion under uniform temperature loading are studied with the finite element analysis. Temperature-dependent mechanical properties are considered for the matrix material only. In addition to analyzing the plane stress and plane strain disc, a 3D thin disc and cylinder are also analyzed to compare the plane problems. We determined the elastic irreversible temperature and global plastic collapse temperature by the finite element calculations for the plane and 3D problem. In addition to the global plastic collapse, for the elastically hard case, the plane stress problem and 3D thin disc may exhibit a local plastic collapse, i.e. significant pile up along the thickness direction, near the inclusion-matrix interface. The pileup cannot be correctly modeled by the plane stress analysis. Furthermore, due to numerical difficulties originated from large deformation, only the lower bound of global plastic collapse temperature of the plane stress problem can be identified. Without considerations of temperature-dependent mechanical properties, the von Mises stress in the matrix would be largely overestimated.

To examine the residual stress field resulting from stamping process for the lower control arm of a car, the explicit finite element analysis is performed for the stamping process by way of the ABAQUS Explicit. The residual stress is obtained in terms of the Von Mises stress and other parameters such as equivalent plastic strain, the change of blank thickness, the final configuration of the blank and the spring back effect are also considered. Moreover, discussed is the convergence of the explicit FEM versus the punch sped and the element discretization

This paper presents sensitivity analysis results of strain on notches under cycling loading to 2-D finite element density considering plasticity. Cylindrical notched specimens having some stress concentrations were modeled with 2-D axisymmetrical finite element having various finite element densities. Elasto-plastic finite element analysis was performed for the various finite element models subjected to cycling loading considering plasticity. The finite element analysis results were compared to investigate sensitivity of the finite element analysis variables such as von-Mises effective stress, accumulated equivalent plastic strain, and equivalent plastic strain to 2-D finite element density. As a result of the comparison, it was found that the accumulated equivalent plastic strain is more sensitive than the others whereas the von-Mises effective stress is much less sensitive.

This paper presents an elastic/plastic model that neglects strain hardening during loading, but accounts for the Bauschinger effect. These mathematical features of the model represent reasonably well the actual behavior of several materials such as high strength steels. Previous attempts to describe the behavior of this kind of materials have been restricted to a class of boundary value problems in which the state of stress in the plastic region is completely controlled by the yield stress in tension or torsion. In particular, the yield stress is supposed to be constant during loading and the forward plastic strain reduces the yield stress to be used to describe reversed yielding. The new model generalizes this approach on plane stress problems assuming that the material obeys the von Mises yield criterion during loading. Then, the model is adopted to describe reversed yielding in thin hollow discs subject to external pressure.

If defects are located far apart, fatigue cracks are independently initiated from them and gradually approach other cracks so that the fatigue life becomes influenced by the crack growth behavior of those interacting cracks. In this study, the effect of the stress interaction between defects on the fatigue crack propagation behavior is investigated experimentally and these results are verified by finite element method. In addition, fatigue crack propagation behaviors under micro hole interaction field are studied.

In order to achieve long fatigue lifetimes for cyclically pressurized thick cylinders, multi-layered compound cylinder has been proposed. Such compound cylinder involves a shrink-fit procedure incorporating a monobloc tube which has previously undergone autofrettage. The basic autofrettage theory assumes elastic-perfectly plastic behaviour. Because of the Bauschinger effect and strain-hardening, most materials do not display elastic-perfectly plastic properties and consequently various autofrettage mo dels are based on different simplified material strain-hardening models, which is assumed that combination of linear strain-hardenig and power strain-hardening model. This approach gives a more accurate prediction than the elastic-perfectly plastic model and is suitable for different strain-hardening materials. In this paper, a general autofrettage model that incorporates the material strain-hardening relationship and the Bauschinger effect, based upon the actual tensile-compressive stress-strain curve of a material was proposed. The model was obtained using the von Mises yield criterion and plane strain condition. The tensile-compressive stress-strain curve was obtained by experiment. The parameters needed in the model were determined by fitting the actual tensile-compressive curve of the material. Finally, strain- hardening model was compared with elastic-perfectly plastic model.
