A PARTICLE TRACKING MODEL TO PREDICT THE DEBRIS TRANSPORT ON THE CONTAINMENT FLOOR

  • An analysis model on debris transport in the containment floor of pressurized water reactors is developed in which the flow field is calculated by Eulerian conservation equations of mass and momentum and the debris particles are traced by Lagrange equations of motion using the pre-determined flow field data. For the flow field calculation, two-dimensional Shallow Water Equations derived from Navier Stokes equations are solved using the Finite Volume Method, and the Harten-Lax-van Leer scheme is used for accuracy to capture the dry-to-wet interface. For the debris tracing, a simplified two-dimensional Lagrangian particle tracking model including drag force is developed. Advanced schemes to find the positions of particles over the containment floor and to determine the position of particles reflected from the solid wall are implemented. The present model is applied to calculate the transport fraction to the Hold-up Volume Tank in Advanced Power Reactors 1400. By the present model, the debris transport fraction is predicted, and the effect of particle density and particle size on transport is investigated.

  • Using a three-dimensional numerical code, B3R developed for nuclide transport of an arbitrary length of decay chain in the buffer between the canister and adjacent rock in a high- level radioactive waste repository by adopting a finite difference method utilizing the control- volume scheme, some illustrative calculations have been done. A linear sorption isotherm, nuclide transport due to diffusion in the buffer and the rock matrix, and advection and dispersion along thin rigid parallel fractures existing in a saturated porous rock matrix as well as diffusion through the fracture wall into the matrix is assumed. In such kind of repository, buffer and rock matrix are known to be important physico-chemical harriers in nuclide retardation. To show effects of buffer and rock matrix on nuclide transport in HLW repository and also to demonstrate usefulness of B3R, several cases of breakthrough curves as well as three- dimensional plots of concentration isopleths associated with these two barriers are introduced for a typical case of decay chain of $^{234}$ Ulongrightarrow$^{230}$ Thlongrightarrow$^{226}$ Ra, which is the most important chain as far as the human environment is concerned.

  • A numerical code for cavitation is developed based on pressure-based algorithm. The k-\varepsilon$ model (with wall function) is used for turbulence, and volume transport equation is used for cavitation model. The compressibility is not considered for the flow field is low speed.

  • All roundabouts are designed based on "Roundabout Design Guideline, Ministry of Land and Transportation, 2014" in Korea. The guideline also provides the traffic volume criteria to convert from signalized intersections to roundabouts. While the criteria are based on capacity of roundabouts, left-turn ratio and the number of lane on approaches are not considered to calculate the capacity of roundabouts. Therefore it is difficult to apply the traffic volume criteria in the real world. In this study, we studied the impact of left-turn ratio and the number of lane on approaches into capacity of roundabouts using micro-simulation. It was found that the capacity of roundabouts is changed according to left-turn ratio and the number of lane on approaches.

Numerical Study on Spring-Neap Variability of Net Volume Transport at Yeomha Channel in the Han River Estuary (한강하구 수로별 순 수송량과 대.소조기 변화에 따른 염하수로의 순 수송량 변동에 관한 수치해석적 연구)

  • The EFDC model with find grid resolution system connecting the Gyeong-Gi bay and Han River estuary was constructed to study on spring-neap variability of net volume transport at each channel of the Han River estuary. The simulation time of numerical model is 124 days from May to August, 2009 with freshwater discharge at Han, Imjin and Yeseong River. The calibration and verification of model results was confirmed using harmonic components of water level and tidal current. The net volume transport was calculated during 30 days with normal freshwater conditions at Seokmo channel and Yeomha channel around Ganghwado. The ebbing net volume transport of 44% and 56% is drained into Gyeong-Gi bay through Yeomha and Seokmo channel, respectively. The ebbing net volume transport nearby Seodo at Yeomha channel convergence flooding net volume transport at Incheon harbor, and drain (westward direction) through channel of tidal flat between Ganghwado and Yeongjongdo to the Gyeong-Gi bay. The averaged net volume transport during 4 tidal cycles was compared to variation of spring-neap periods of the Yeomha channel. The convergence position is moved up- and down-ward according to spring-neap variability. The movement of the convergence zone is appeared because 1) increasing of discharged rate tidal flat channel between Ganghwado and Yeongjongdo at the spring period, 2) The growth of barotropic forcing with downward direction at the spring tide, and 3) The strength of the baroclinic pressure gradient is greater than spring with mixing processes.

On the Availability of Han river as Water Transport Route (수상운송로로서 한강의 이용가능성에 관한 연구)

  • Because of the rapid growing traffic volumes of cargo, especially between Seoul and Inchon, and lack of investment into transport infrastructure in the past, in Kyong-in area have suffered from the serious traffic congestion in the public-road and the express-way network, But the further expansion of the traffic volume in near future is difficult due to burden of the higher expansion of the traffic volume in near future is difficult due to burden of the higher construction cost. Although the traffic congestion on the Kyung-in railway, is not very serious comparing with the road sector, the shortage of capacity on some main lines becomes emerged as a problem as railway traffic has increased. Unlike these two modes, the water transport, which has been paid relatively less attention for commodity transport in Kyong-in area, has not any constaint in this respect. Han river has been used as a water transport route in Chosun Dynasty which is called Cho-wun. This paper therefore aims to propose the availability of Han river as the alternative water transportation mode, in order to decrease the congestion between Seoul-Inchon by considering the construction of Kyong-in artificial water channel in near future. In this paper, we investigate the availability of Nanji-do as the physical distribution depot connecting with the circulation express way in the national capital distribution depot connecting with the circulation express way in the national capital. We also estimate the traffic volume by using the push-barge carrier (300DWT) in the same channel through the simulation under some assumptions such as ship's turnaround time, speed, etc.

A note on the Geostrophically Controlled Volume Transport of the Tgushima Current

  • A simple analytic model for estimating the volume transport of the Tsushima Current is considered by assuming that the transports through the connecting channels, the Korea and Tsugaru Straits, are geostrophically controled. The model gives a much simpler form of solution than that by Minato and Kimura (1980). It depends no longer on the geometry of the marginal sea and on the thickness of western boundary layer relative to the dimension of the ocean, but considers the geometry of the connecting channels ignored by Nof (1993). The external parameters turn out to be the oceanic meridional sea level difference between the two channels, the depth of the channels and the meridional position of the marginal sea. For typical value of the depth ratio of the channels to the ocean, the model gives an estimate of the Tsushima Current transport of acceptable magnitude.

  • Using a two-dimensional numerical model, nuclide transport in the buffer between the canister and adjacent rock in a high-level radioactive waste repository is dealt with. Calculations are made for a typical case with a three-member decay chain, $^{234}$ U longrightarrow $^{230}$ Th longrightarrow $^{226}$ Ra. The solution method used here is based on a physically exact formulation by a control volume method directly integrating the governing equation over each control volume.

Transport Spillover Effect on Airport Networks and Its Impact on Regional Economy (운송 파급효과가 항공네트워크와 지역경제에 미치는 영향)

  • Air transport is at the core of global economic growth. There is a close relationship between the flow of regional elements and the growth of the regional economy. It is easy to misestimate the impact of airports on the regional economy without considering spatial spillover effects. This study attempted to establish an asymmetric economic geographical weight matrix by applying the Spatial Durbin Model with cargo volume and passenger numbers as indicators. The influence of spillover effects on the regional economy, including direct spillover effects and indirect spillover effects are studied. The results revealed that passenger numbers and cargo volume have significant positive spillover effects on the regional economy. The driving effect of the airport on the regional economy was considered from a wider space scope. This study contributes to the scientific evaluation of the aviation economy.

  • Baroclinic hydraulic model experiments on the time-varying states of the flow pattern and water exchange in Sagami Bay were carried out based on quasi-steady state experiments on the flow pattern. For the model experiments, density changes as well as time changes in the volume transport of the upper layer were executed to investigate the flow response of the bay in the case of a sudden inflow of low density water and variable volume transport into the Sagami Bay. The results of the model experiments showed that when the volume transport was increased frontal eddies or frontal wave streamers from the Kuroshio Through Flow were transferred to the inner part of the bay along with cyclonic circulation in the bay. In addition, density boundary currents appeared and flowed along the eastern boundary of the bay. As the upper layer density decreased, frontal eddies, frontal streamers and coastal boundary density currents occurred and proceeded along the eastern boundary of the bay at a high speed.
