A parametric study on pervaporation-facilitated esterification was performed by using a practical model based on non-perfect separation through membrane which is not perfectly permselective to water. Thus, membrane selectivity as well as membrane capability to remove water should be taken into account in establishing the simulation model to explain how the membrane separation influence the esterification reaction process. It was shown by simulation that in the reaction systems with non-perfect separation, the permeation of reactants which are acid or/and alcohol retards the reaction by inducing the backward reaction so that reaction conversion curve is located between a reaction system coupled with pervaporation process having a perfect permselectivity to water and a reaction system without pervaporation process. The volume change of reaction system occurs as a result of the permeation through the membrane. The reaction volume change which can be characterized by the reaction ratio of $r_{\Psi}\;to\;r_{{\Psi}=1}$ affects reaction kinetics by concentrating reactants and products, respectively, with different extent with time; reactant-concentrating effect is dominant during the initial stage of reaction, resulting in facilitating the reaction, and then product-concentrating effect is exerted more on reaction, causing to slow down the reaction. When pervaporative dehydration is applied to the reaction system plays an important role in the reaction as well. The effect of timing to impose pervaporation on reaction system affected the reaction kinetics in terms of reaction rate and reaction conversion. A relationship was derived to explain membrane unit capacity and reaction parameters that will be used as a design tool to determine membrane unit capacity at a given reaction conditions or reaction parameters at a membrane unit capacity.

How to estimate the shape of trawl net and ropes of a midwater trawl on full scale was described by implementing a three-dimensional semi-analytic treatment of a towing cable system with the field experiments obtained with the Scanmar system. The shape of trawl net from wingend to the beginning of codend was assumed to be of form $\chi$$^2$/ae$^2$+ y$^2$/be$^2$=(z - c)$^2$/c$^2$, and that of the ropes attached behind otter boards be of form yr = $A\chi$rB. In case of warp length 300m long, the volume of trawl net, the ratio of net height to net width at the mouth of the trawl net, and the inclination angle of float rope were estimated according to the change of towing speed. The volume and the distance between wingtips were increased with increasing towing speed. And the inclination angle of float (or ground) rope was slightly decreased with increasing towing speed.
This study was carried out to propose improvement planting method by the research and analysis of planting concept, planting density, planting style and pattern in apartment complex, Seoul. Survey sites were selected by reflecting the change of green area ratio : Hawgok Jugong apartment complex, Gangseo-gu(1974), Samik-green apartment complex, Gangdong-gu(1980), Dongsindaea apartment complex, Gangseo-gu(1992). Green area in apartment complex was classified with front green area, side green area, and back-side green area. Planting concept that composed of landscape planting concept but anyother concept was not, was similar to all sites not differ from creation time. And planted species was not differ from planting style. Planting density was of both conopyㆍunder story layer was 0.0∼0.2 tree/$m^2$, and that of shrub layer was 0.0∼0.5 tree/$m^2$ Shrub layer planting density was insufficient and the density was not changed according to the creation time. Canopyㆍunderstory and shrub was planted to another green space, not concern with multi-layer structure. Planting pattern was utilized to single planting, linear planting, and random triangle planting, but it was not to the change that in each green space planting concept. Green area in apartment complex should be variety according to planting density, planting structure and planting pattern. And we should get the function of covering and beauty in case of front green space, that of ecological environment and increasing green volume in case of back-side green area, that of increasing green volume in case of side green area, apartment complex.
Background: The causes of exertional desaturation in patients with COPD can be multifactorial. We aimed to investigate factors predict exertional desaturation in patients with moderate to severe COPD. Methods: We tested 51 consecutive patients with stable COPD (FEV1/FVC, $40{\pm}13%$ predicted). Patients performed a six minute walk test (6MWT). Pulse oxymetric saturation (SpO2) and pulse rate were recorded. Results: Oxygen desaturation was found in 15 subjects after 6MWT, while 36 subjects were not desaturated. Lung diffusing capacity was significantly lower in desaturation (DS) group ($62{\pm}18%$ predicted) compared with not desaturated (ND) group ($84{\pm}20$, p<0.01). However there was no statistical difference of FEV1/FVC ratio or residual volume between two groups. The pulse rate change was significantly higher in the desaturated compared with the not desaturated group. Six minute walking distance, subjective dyspnea scale, airflow obstruction, and residual volume did not predict exertional oxygen desaturation. Independent factors assessed by multiple logistic regression revealed that a pulse rate increment (odd ratio [OR], 1.19; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.01~1.40; p=0.02), a decrease in baseline PaO2 (OR, 1.105; 95% CI, 1.003~1.218; p=0.04) and a decrease in lung diffusing capacity (OR, 1.10; 95% CI, 1.01~1.19; p=0.01) were significantly associated with oxygen desaturation. Receiver operator characteristic (ROC) analysis showed that an absolute increment in pulse rate of 16/min gave optimal discrimination between desaturated and not desaturated patients after 6MWT. Conclusion: Pulse rate increment and diffusion capacity can predict exertional oxygen desaturation in stable COPD patients with moderate to severe airflow obstruction.

In the case of composite material, a variety of characteristics were expressed depending on the materials that were composed of. In this study, the materials showing non-linear shear behavior were investigated among FRP composite. Each specimen was designed and analyzed according to ASTM D4255 method: regulations on the 2-rail. The dependent variables included in this experiment were a variety of fiber, fiber volume ratio, fiber array direction, temperature, material homogeneity. For determination of characteristics based on the fiber array, fiber array direction of 0, 30, 45, and 60 degrees were selected for test specimen. Temperature of 25, 40, 60, and $80^{\circ}C$ were considered for investigation of FRP materials'shear behavior based on the external temperature. Nonlinear shear behavior was observed throughout the FRP composite material in this study. Also, using vinyl ester resins, high fiber volume ratio, and fiber array direction of 45 degree appeared to show the most prominent nonlinear shear behavior. As for the findings related to the temperature change, non-linear behavior was decreased as the external temperature increased. For factory manufactured product, non-linear behavior was relatively at parity in comparison to the behavior found in the hand lay-up FRP composite specimen.
This study compared PENELOPE with measured values from low energy peak to high energy peak to reduce peak to compton ratio and continuum background spectrum using $^{60}Co$, $^{137}Cs$ and mixed volume source. In addition, the change in backscattering and compton edge efficiency was compared with that of PENELOPE through changes in the vicinity of low energy. The results from the mixed volume source are applied to the soil samples to determine how much the minimum detection limits of the soil samples are reduced in the suppression and unsuppressed mode. The compton suppression of the low energy region of $^{60}CO$ (1,173 keV) was considerable, and the Compton edge RF for the $^{137}Cs$ (661 keV) peak was 2.8. In particular, the $^{60}Co$ source emits coincidence gamma rays of 1,173.2 keV and 1,332.5 keV, so compton inhibition was reduced by approximately 21%. RF of compton edges of 1,173 keV and 1,332 keV emitted from a $^{60}Co$ source was 3.2 and 3.4, and the peak to compton edge ratio was improved to 8: 1. And Compared with Penelope, the uncertainty was well within 2%. In compton unsuppressed mode, MDA values of 661 keV, 1,173 keV and 1,332 keV were 0.535, 0.173 and 0.136 Bq/kg, respectively, but decreased in compton suppressed mode to 0.121, 0.00826 and 0.00728 Bq/kg. Thus, Compton suppressed could reduce the background radioactivity and the radioactivity contained in the detector itself.

For quality evaluation of Korean cabbage kimchi during fermentation at $4^{\circ}C$ for 45 days, color change of kimchi juice was measured instrumentally. Chemical analyses of the kimchi juice showed that the kimchi has reached pH 4.2 and titratable acidity of 0.63% together with the highest vitamin C content, those values being obtained under the optimum ripening period, after 30 days of fermentation. The volume of kimchi juice increased until day 30 and was constant thereafter. The CIE-1976 $L^*$$a^*$$b^*$ color values increased until day 30 and then decreased. The ratio of color value $a^*$ to $b^*$ was 0.82 in the beginning, 0.98 at the optimum ripening period, and 0.94 under the over-ripening periods. The quality of kimchi could be estimated by using the $L^*$, $a^*$, $b^*$ values or the ratio of $a^*$ to $b^*$, alone or in combination with the juice volume.

Anaerobic fill time and feeding pattern in SBR operation were investigated to find way of minimizing poor nitrogen removal efficiency in BNR process without external carbon addition. The three types of the modified SBR operations that were CO-SBR, IA-SBR, and SF-SBR were tested by lab-scale and pilot-scale SBR processes($2\;m^3/day$). In addition, practical equation for biological nitrogen removal was suggested and the equation considered the effect of ratio of fill volume over whole SBR volume and the ratio of step-feed in SBR. The denitrification efficiency of the SF-SBR was best among the three SBRs and followed by IA-SBR, and CO-SBR. The efficiency was 95%, 61%, and 19%, respectively. Looking at the change of sludge floc density by the length of anaerobic fill time, the density of sludge floc at 1 hour and 2 hours of anaerobic fill time were greater than 3 hours of one. The floc size distributions were $100{\sim}300\;{\mu}m$ and $200{\sim}400\;{\mu}m$ with respect to anaerobic fill time 2 hours and 3 hours, respectively.

In this study, lap spliced ultra-high strength reinforced concrete beams were tested and the code criteria for calculating the lap splice length which was affected by the transverse reinforcement and concrete covering performance were reviewed. The main variables for test were set as fiber volume fraction and transverse reinforcing bar arrangement to improve the confining performance of the concrete cover. The change of the confining performance of concrete cover according to the increase in the fiber mixing amount at 1% and 2% volume ratio was examined, and D10 stirrups with a spacing of 100 mm were placed in the lap spliced region. As a result of the test, the specimens confined by the stirrups showed a sudden drop of load bearing capacity with horizontal cracking at the position of tensile longitudinal reinforcement. However, horizontal cracks were not appeared at the location of longitudinal reinforcement for the specimens with steel fiber. And these specimens showed gradual decrease of load bearing capacity after experiencing peak load. In particular, it was found that the strain at the position of the tensile longitudinal reinforcements of the specimens to which the mixing ratio of 2% was applied exceeds the yield strain. As a result of measuring the strain on the concrete surface, it was found that the fiber was more effective in preventing damage to the concrete surface than the stirrups for short lap spliced region.
There is considerable current interest in the effect of regular vigorous exercise and in particular endurance-running as a possible measure in improving myocardial function. Some data indicate that the aging heart may actually suffer from vigorous endurance exercise. On the contrary appropriate exercise in aged animals improves myocardial function and aerobic energy metabolism. So far there is relatively little data to indicate that endurance exercise is in fact beneficial in improving myocardial function or damaging to heart of aged animals. The present investigation aimed to study the possible effect of a long range treadmill training program on the heart in aging rats. Male rats aged 3, 10, and 20 months were divided at random into a control (sedentary) and an exercise group. The training group was exercised for 5 days a week on an automated treadmill for 20minutes at 18m/min over a period of 5 months. The exercise regimen of our experiments did not cause any significant changes in the tissues and ultrastructural as com-pared with sedentary age-matched control. Tissues and ultrastructures of myocardial cells in trained group aged 8 months are intact and well organized as well as sedentary control group. Age associated tissue and ultrastructural changes of trained group aged 15 months included : an increase in transformed mitochondria, vacuoles, lysosomes, lipid droplets and early lipofuscin. But the trained heart did not show significant difference in tissue and ultrastructural properties from those of sedentary controls. Endurance-trained group aged 25 months showed significant qualitative tissue and ultrastructural difference as compared with age-matched controls. In addition to those found in 25 months control group, focal necrosis, myofibril fraying, hypercontraction band, seperation of intercalated discs, degenerating nucleus and infiltration of collagenous fiber into myocyte were noted in trained 25 months group. The stereological examination of the mi-crographs disclosed no significant difference in the myoflbril, mitochondrion, sarcotubule and in-terstitium volume density and surface density of mitochondrial cristae and numerical density of mitochondria between trained and control group aged 8 and 15 months. In the trained 25 months group, significant increase in volume density of interstitium, lipofucsin granule were shown as compared to untrained age-matched control. On the other hand, significant decrease in mitochondrion volume density was shown. The myofibril volume density did not differ between trained and control group although trained group showed slight increase. From the data obtained a reduced mitochondria/myofibrils ratio was found in trained rat heart aged 25 months and there was no difference between trained and control rat aged 15 months. But a slight but not significant increase was found in the trained group aged 8 months as compared with same age control group. Such increase in the ratio in young animals is considered to be of great importance to cardiac pumping and adaptability. Whereas such adaptations don't seem to occur in aged heart muscle. This study proposed that repeated endurance exercise do not cause any significant qualitative and quantitative ultrastructural change of heart muscle in young(3months) and adult (10months) suggesting that the heart is able to adapt to the exercise. On the contrary, the repeated endurance exercise stress may actually induce degenerative changes in the aged heart muscle(20months).
