A Study on the Characteristics of Circular Piezoelectric Transformer which has Crescent-shaped Input Type (Crescent-shaped Input Type 원형압전변압기의 특성 연구)

  • This paper presents a new disk-type piezoelectric transformer. The input side of the transformer has a crescent-shaped electrode and the output side has a focused poling direction. The piezoelectric transformers operated in each transformer's resonance vibration mode. The electrodes and poling directions on commercially available piezoelectric ceramic disks were designed so that the planar or shear mode coupling factor $(k_p\;k_{15})$ becomes effective rather than the transverse mode coupling factor $(k_{31})$. ANSYS finite element code was used to analyze transformer behavior and to optimize electrode and poling configurations. The voltage step-up ratio of the proposed transformer has been markedly improved in comparison with that of the equivalent rectangular(Rosen) type. A single layer prototype transformer, $20\sim30mm$ in diameter and $1.0\sim3.5mm$ thick, was fabricated, such as step-up ratio, power transformation efficiency, and temperature were measured. While the transformer was driving a Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp(CCFL), the temperature field of the transformer was also observed.

  • Recently, a fuel cell is remarkable for new generation system. The fuel cell generation system converts the chemical energy of a fuel directly into electrical energy. The fuel cell generation is characterized by low voltage and high current. For connecting to utility, it needs both a step up converter and an inverter. The step up converter makes DC link and the inverter changes DC to AC. In this paper full bridge converter and the single phase inverter are designed and installed for fuel cell. Simulation and experiment verify that fuel cell generation system could be applied for the distributed generation.

Effect. of $TiO_2$ and PZT powder additions on the Ag/Pd Electrode for Step-down Multilayer Piezoelectric Transformer (적충 강압형 압전변압기 Ag/Pd 전극의 $TiO_2$ 와 PZT 분말의 첨가에 따른 효과연구)

  • In order to fabricate the multilayer piezoelectric transformer by tape casting method, we investigated the effect of $TiO_2$ and PZT powder additions on the Ag/Pd electrode. Meanwhile, effects of $TiO_2$ and PZT powder additives on the microstructure and electrical properties of Ag/Pd electrode were investigated in detail. In addition, the multilayer piezoelectric transformers were fabricated and the characteristics with various load resistance were measured at resonance frequency. The voltage step-up ratio was continuously change with increasing input voltage and load resistance, and then output voltage and powers were increased with increasing input voltage at matching impedance. The temperature rise of multilayer piezoelectric transformers were increased with increasing input voltage and load resistance. Meanwhile, multilayer piezoelectric transformers sintered at $1100^{\circ}C$ show the favorable characteristics with a power of 15 W at $100\;{\Omega}$.

A New Single Phase Multilevel Inverter Topology with Two-step Voltage Boosting Capability

  • In this paper, a new single phase multilevel inverter topology with a single DC source is presented. The proposed topology is developed based on the concepts of the L-Z source inverter and the switched capacitor multilevel inverter. The input voltage to the proposed inverter is boosted by two steps: the first step by an impedance network and the second step by switched capacitor units. Compared to other existing topologies, the presented topology can produce a higher boosted multilevel output voltage while using a smaller number of components. In addition, it provides more flexibility to control boosting factor, size, cost and complexity of the inverter. The proposed inverter possesses all the advantages of the L-Z source inverter and the switched capacitor multilevel inverter like controlling the start-up inrush current and capacitor voltage balancing using a simple switching strategy. The operating principle and general expression for the different parameters of the proposed topology are presented in detail. A phase disposition pulse width modulation strategy has been developed to switch the inverter. The effectiveness of the topology is verified by extensive simulation and experimental studies on a 7-level inverter structure.

  • In this paper, a non-isolated high step-up and high efficiency boost converter is proposed. By using the 3-level boost converter structure, the proposed converter can obtain higher voltage gain than conventional high step-up converters. The voltage spike of the switching device is well clamped by using the clamp circuit composed of a clamp diode and a capacitor and the energy of the leakage inductor of coupled inductor is effectively transferred to output. Due to the 3-level structure, the equivalent switching frequency of the coupled inductor is doubled, which results in reduced inductor size. A 500 W prototype converter is built and tested to verify performance of the proposed converter.

  • We propose a high voltage dc-dc converter for CW(continuous wave) $CO_2$ laser system using a current resonant half-bridge inverter and a Cockcroft-Walton circuit. This high voltage power supply includes a 2-stage voltage multiplier driven by a regulated half-bridge series resonant inverter. The inverter drives a step-up transformer and the transformer secondary is applied to the voltage multiplier. Thus, it has high efficiency because of the less switching losses by virtue of the current resonant half-bridge inverter, and also compact size, small parasitic capacitance in the transformer stage owing to the low number of a winding turn of the step up transformer secondary by combining with Cockroft-Walton circuit. We could be obtained the maximum laser output power of 44 W and the maximum system efficiency of over 16 %.

Fabrication and Characteristics of 10-V Josephson Junction Array (10-V 조셉슨접합 어레이의 제작 및 특성)

  • 10-V Josephson junction array arranged in 8 parallel stripline paths was fabricated using self-aligning and reactive ion etching techniques. These techniques were introduced in detail with aim of obtaining high-quality junctions. The array has 18,184 Josephson junctions with the area of $12\mu\textrm{m}$$\times$$38\mu\textrm{m}$. The gap voltage and minimum critical current density were about 2.7 ㎷ and /$23 A\textrm{cm}^2$, respectively. And the critical current density and leakage current at 5 volt were about 27 $A/\textrm{cm}^2$ and $5\mu\textrm{A}$, respectively When operated in the frequency range of 76-88 ㎓, the away generated constant voltage steps up to 14-19 V. The step size near 10-V was more than 7 $\mu\textrm{A}$.

  • With the aim to maximize the use of a given voltage source in the field of railway and electric vehicles, this study applies a technique for controlling the overmodulation region between the linear and the six-step regions. High linearity overmodulation techniques that do not use look-up table (LUT) to digital signal processor (DSP) using carrier based pulse width modulation (PWM) are proposed. Such technique requires the phase of the voltage vector at the point where the circular trajectory of the voltage command vector and hexagonal cross each other. Therefore, a method is proposed to obtain a phase of a voltage vector that is derived through an equation and applied to a carrier-based PWM. Validity of the proposed implementation method is confirmed through simulation and experiment.

  • This paper describes an AC voltage regulator using AC chopper and auxiliary transformer which is series connected with main input. It has many advantages such as fast voltage control, high efficiency and low THD. A detail study of step down AC voltage regulator is described and two kinds of novel step-up/down voltage regulator for AVR application are proposed. The operation principle and PWM method of the proposed regulator are described. Experimental results show that it can be used as AC voltage regulator for special purpose very efficiently.
