We investigated the visible emission property of $SrTiO_3$ (STO) single crystals irradiated with gammy-ray (${\gamma}$-ray) at various total doses up to 900 kGy. The electric and optical absorption properties of the irradiated STO samples were hardly changed with the ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation, compared with those of un-irradiated STO. In contrast, the visible emission near 550 nm increased with the ${\gamma}$-ray dose increasing. While the development of the visible emission was indicative of the increase of oxygen vacancies inside STO by the ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation, the newly generated oxygen vacancies were not significantly harmful to the electric and optical properties of STO. We concluded that the STO single crystal should have a good tolerance against the damage by the ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation.
$La/TiO_2$ - graphene composites were synthesized in this study, and applied to the photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) under UV-visible light irradiation. X-ray diffraction (XRD), surface analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis demonstrated that $La/TiO_2$ nanoparticles were well distributed on the surface of graphene, and formed the heterostructure of $La/TiO_2$-graphene. Compared to the pure $TiO_2$, $La/TiO_2$-graphene composites displayed much higher photocatalytic activities in RhB degradation under UV-visible light irradiation. The photocatalytic data of $La/TiO_2$-graphene composites exhibit extended light absorption in the visible light region, and possess better charge separation capability than that of pure $TiO_2$. The high photocatalytic activity was attributed to the composite's high adsorptivity, extended light absorption, and increased charge separation efficiency, due to the excellent electrical properties of graphene, and the large surface contact between graphene and $La/TiO_2$ nanoparticles.

Soft x-ray microscopy provides a unique set of capabilities in-between those of visible light and electron microscopy. It has long been recognized that nature provides a 'water window' spectral region between the K shell x-ray absorption edges of carbon (~290eV) and oxygen (~540eV), where organic materials show strong absorption and phase contrast, while water is relatively non-absorbing. This enables imaging of hydrated biological specimens that are several microns thick with high intrinsic contrast using x-rays with a wavelength of 2.3~4.4nm. Soft X-ray microscopy is therefore well suited to the study of specimens like single biological cells. The most direct advantage of X-ray microscope is their high spatial resolution when compared with visible light microscopes, combined with an ability to image hydrated specimens that are several microns with a minimum of preparation. Our study describes the conceptual design of soft x-ray microscope system based on a laser-based source for biomedical application with high resolution ($\leq$50nm) and short exposure time ($\leq$30sec).

To prepare very stable acrylic type emulsion having a visible ray absorption property, in-situ preparation technique of $Cu_xS$ nanoparticle was adopted. Firstly, the acylic emulsions of methyl methacrylate(MMA), butyl acrylate(BA), and acrylonitrile(AN) were synthesized by pre-emulsion polymerization at $60^{\circ}C$ in the presence of anionic surfactant. Secondly, $Cu_xS$ nanocomposited emulsions were directly prepared in the prepolymerized acrylic emulsion with $CuSO_4$ at $50^{\circ}C$. The presnce of $Cu_xS$ nanoparticle in emulsion was confirmed by SEM and EDS. The final $Cu_xS$ nanocomposited emulsion showed an olive-green colour and good emulsion stability up to 1 month. In addition the PET films coated with our $Cu_xS$ nanocomposited emulsion absorbed effectively the visible ray.
N-doped $TiO_2$ microcuboids were successfully prepared by a simple one-pot hydrothermal method. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It was found that the N-doped $TiO_2$ microcuboids enhanced absorption in the visible light region, and exhibited higher activity for photocatalytic degradation of model dyes. Based on the experimental results, a visible light induced photocatalytic mechanism was proposed for N-doped anatase $TiO_2$ microcuboids.
An alternative molecular porphyrin-phthalocyanine aggregate was prepared and characterized with UV-visible and X-ray absorption spectroscopies. UV-visible experiments evidence 1-dimensional porphyrin-phthalo-cyanine array formed by mixing $SnTPPCl_2 ({\lambda}_{max}=429,\;{\varepsilon}=2.4{\times10^ 5 /M{\cdot}cm)\;and\;NiPc(OBu)_8({\lambda}_{max}=744 nm,\;{\varepsilon}= 2.0{\times}10^ 5 /M{\cdot}cm)$ in solution. In the UV-visible spectrum of the porphyrin-phthalocyanine array, $(SnPNiPc)_n$, a new Q-band appeared at 844 nm with decrease of the Q-band peak of $NiPc(OBu)_8$ at 744 nm. The red-shift of Q-band evidences an alternative porphyrin-phthalocyanine array formed in solution through metal-halide interaction rather than ${\pi}-{\pi}$ facial interaction, in which nickel of $NiPc(OBu)_8$ coordinates with chloride of $SnTPPCl_2$ through self assembly. Ni K-edge XANES (X-ray absorption near edge structure) spectra also support the axial ligation of nickel to chloride. The square planar structure of $NiPc(OBu)_8$ turns to an octahedral structure in (SnPNiPcSnP) by axial ligation. A higher energy-shift (0.2 eV) of the preedge peak of (SnPNiPcSnP) indicaties partial oxidation of nickel by charge transfer from NiPc$(OBu)_8$ to SnTPPCl$_2$.
SnS-$TiO_2$ nanocomposites are synthesized using simple, cheap, and less toxic $SnCl_2$ as the tin (II) precursor. The prepared nanoparticles are characterized using powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS). The XRD and TEM results indicate that the prepared product has SnS nanoparticles and a grain diameter of 30 nm. The DRS demonstrate that SnS-$TiO_2$ possesses the absorption profile across the entire visible light region. The generation of reactive oxygen species is detected through the oxidation reaction from 1,5-diphenyl carbazide (DPCI) to 1,5-diphenyl carbazone (DPCO). It is found that the photocurrent density and photocatalytic effect increase with the modified SnS. Excellent catalytic degradation of Texbrite BA-L (TBA) solution is observed using the SnS-$TiO_2$ composites under visible light irradiation. It is proposed that both the strong visible light absorption and the multiple exciton excitations contribute to the high visible light photocatalytic activity.
New porous $TiO_2$ nanostructures with shapes of pearl and rice were synthesized by hydrothermal treatment of $TiO_2$-liposome nanocomposites in acid and base solutions, respectively, as identified by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images and large Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface areas. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns and selected area electron diffraction proved them to be well-defined anatase crystals. Their UV-visible reflectance absorption spectra were observed to have low band gap energy (3.03 and 3.07 eV, respectively), exhibiting surface absorption band in the visible range from 400 to 600 nm. The degradation of methylene blue (MB) over the $TiO_2$ nanostructures was observed upon visible-light irradiation, which was found to be very efficient as compared with any other conventional visible-light responsive $TiO_2$ nanostructures.
Ag deposited N-$TiO_2$ composite nanoparticles were prepared via $NH_3$ plasma treatment. X-ray diffraction, UV-vis spectroscopy, photoluminescence, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to characterize the prepared $TiO_2$ samples. The plasma treatment did not change the phase composition and particle sizes of $TiO_2$ samples, but extended its absorption edges to the visible light region. The photocatalytic activities were tested in the degradation of an aqueous solution of a reactive dyestuff, methylene blue, under visible light. The photocatalytic activities of Ag deposited N-$TiO_2$ composite nanoparticles were much higher than Ag-$TiO_2$, N-$TiO_2$, and P25. A possible mechanism for the photocatalysis was proposed.
AC and ZnS modified $TiO_2$ composites (AC/ZnS/$TiO_2$) were prepared using a sol-gel method. The composite obtained was characterized by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area measurements, X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis, and according to the UV-vis absorption spectra (UV-vis). XRD patterns of the composites showed that the AC/ZnS/$TiO_2$ composites contain a typical single and clear anatase phase. The surface properties as observed by SEM present the characterization of the texture of the AC/ZnS/$TiO_2$ composites, showing a homogenous composition in the particles showing the micro-surface structures and morphology of the composites. The EDX spectra of the elemental identification showed the presence of C and Ti with Zn and S peaks for the AC/ZnS/$TiO_2$ composite. UV-vis patterns of the composites showed that these composites had greater photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation. A rhodamine B (Rh.B) solution under visible light irradiation was used to determine the photocatalytic activity. The degradation of Rh.B was determined using UV/Vis spectrophotometry. An increase in the photocatalytic activity was observed. From the photocatalytic results, the excellent activity of the Y-fullerene/$TiO_2$ composites for the degradation of methylene blue under visible irradiation could be attributed to an increase in the photo-absorption effect caused by the ZnS and to the cooperative effect of the AC.
