Fabrication of Porous Ceramic Materials for Biomedical and Environmental Applications

  • Ceramics have some properties that are unmatched by other kind of materials like metals or polymers. The ability of high thermal and chemical resistance and in case of being superior in specific mechanical properties makes the ceramic materials suitable for arange of applications. The microstructure and morphology of a material arguably permit the use of many advanced application otherwise difficult to achieve.Porous structures have some important applications in biomedical and environmental field. For human hard tissue reconstruction and augmentation procedure suitable biomaterials are used with a desirable porosity. A range of porous bioceramics were fabricated with tailored design to meet the demand of specific applications. Channeled and interconnected porosity was introduced in alumina, zirconia, and hydroxyapatite or tri calcium phosphate ceramics by different methods like multi-pass extrusion process, bubble formation in viscous slurry,slurry dripping in immiscible liquid, sponge replica method etc. The detailed microstructural and morphological investigations were carried out to establish the unique features of each method and the developed systems. For environmental filters the porous structures were also very important. We investigated a range of channeled and randomly porous silicon based ceramic composites to enhance the material stability and filtration efficiency by taking advantage of the material chemistry of the element. Detailed microstructural and mechanical characterizations were carried out for the fabricated porous filtration systems.

  • 저항 및 자항등의 유체성능이 뛰어난 선형을 개발하기 위해서는 선체에 작용하는 여러 방향의 힘은 물론 그러한 결과를 발생시키는 선체 주위의 유동 현상에 대한 이해가 필수적이다. 이러한 국부 유동 현상의 규명을 위해 일반 상선 및 특수선 주위의 전체 파형과 속도 분포 등의 국부 유동현상을 관측할 수 있는 종합적인 국부유동 계측 시스템이 개발되었다. 이를 사용하여 KRISO 3600TEU 컨테이너선(KCS) 주위의 국부유동을 계측하였다. 본 자료는 날씬하고 빠른 현대적인 상선의 유동을 이해하는데 매우 귀중한 자료일 뿐만 아니라 계산유체역학 기법을 이용한 계산 결과의 검증을 위해서도 매우 중요한 자료로 평가된다.

Numerical Computation for the Comparison of Stern Flows around Various Twin Skegs

  • Numerical analysis of viscous flow around twin-skeg hull forms was conducted according to the variations of distance between skegs and vertical skeg inclinations by using a hydrodynamic analysis system, WAVIS. Six twin-skeg hull forms were derived by combining three distances between skegs (16m, 20m, 24m) and four vertical skeg angles ($0^{\circ},\;10^{\circ},\;15^{\circ},\;20^{\circ}$). It is found that the better resistance performance can be obtained with larger vertical skeg angle and smaller skeg distance for the present test cases. It also can be seen that the same trend is true for the nominal wake distributions in the propeller plane. Those tendencies were confirmed by the experimental results of MOERI. It is shown that numerical analysis can be a useful and practical tool for the evaluation and improvement of hydrodynamic performances for the complex stern hull forms with twin skegs.

피에조콘 시험의 유한요소 해석 II (Finite Element Analysis of Piezocone Test II)

  • 본 연구에서는 피에조콘 시험의 유한요소해석을 수행하였다. 이를 위하여 점탄소성 bounding surface 모델, 가상일의 방정식(virtual work equation) 및 theory of mixtures를 Updated Lagrangian reference frame에서 formulation하였다. 결과적으로 구성된 유한요소 formulation을 컴퓨터 프로그래밍 하였으며 유한요소해석에서 얻은 콘 저항치, 과잉간극수압 및 간극수압소산 등의 결과를 실험치와 비교 분석하였으며 피에조콘 주변의 응력, 변형율 및 과잉간극수압의 contour를 유한요소해석에서 구하여 이를 고찰하였다. 비등방성 및 점성이 추가된 구성모델을 사용함으로서 응력의 비등방성 및 관입속도를 효과적으로 simulation할 수 있었다. 유한요소 Formulation 과정은 'I' 결과는 'II'에서 설명된다.

로터리 댐퍼의 토오크 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Torque Characteristics of Rotary Dampers)

  • Rotary dampers are damping devices which provide high resistance to shaft rotation. Rotary dampers are being used in various areas to enable the gentle opening and closing of the rotation motion relative to home furniture, industry machinery and automotive parts. Rotary dampers can be installed directly at the rotating point of a various part and can achieve uniform, gentle movement which increases quality and value of products. And generally, the silicone fluid is used as the damping medium because of its stable viscous properties. The movement of these little decelerators can be achieved with a high viscosity of working fluid and throttles installed in the body of the rotary damper. The damping force can be achieved clockwise, anti-clockwise or in both directions according to the structure of the orifices or throttles. In this paper, the torque performances of the rotary damper containing air in the working fluid were studied. For this purpose, the torque characteristic of the rotary damper according to the variation of various operating conditions such as clearance of leakage, dimensions of groove orifice, content ratio of air, etc., were simulated with AMEsim software.

  • An innovative Hybrid Passive Resistive configuration for Truss Girder Frames (HPR-TGFs) is introduced in the present study. The proposed system is principally consisting of Fluid Viscous Dampers (FVDs) and Buckling Restrained Braces (BRBs) as its seismic resistive components. Concurrent utilization of these devices will develop an efficient energy dissipating mechanism which is able to mitigate lateral displacements as well as the base shear, simultaneously. However, under certain circumstances which the presence of FVDs might not be essential, the proposed configuration has the potential to incorporate double BRBs in order to achieve the redundancy of alternative load bearing paths. This study is extending the modern Direct Displacement Based Design (DDBD) procedure as the design methodology for HPR-TGF systems. Based on a series of nonlinear time history analysis, it is demonstrated that the design outcomes are almost identical to the pre-assumed design criteria. This implies that the ultimate characteristics of HPR-TGFs such as lateral stiffness and inter-story drifts are well-proportioned through the proposed design procedure.

  • It has been noted that the low frequency absorption coefficient of a porous sample placed in a standing wave tube is affected by the nature of the sample's edge constraint. The edge constraint has the effect of stiffening the solid phase of the sample, which itself can be strongly coupled to the material's fluid phase, and hence the incident sound field, by viscous means at low frequencies. In recent work it has also been shown that such a circumferential constraint causes the low frequency transmission loss of a layer of fibrous material to approach a finite low frequency limit that is proportional to the flow resistance of the layer and which is substantially higher than that of an unconstrained sample of the same material. However, it was also found that the benefit of the circumferential edge constraint was reduced in a transitional frequency range by a shearing resonance of the sample. Here it will be shown that the effect of that resonance can be mitigated or eliminated by adding additional axial and radial constraints running through the sample. It will also be shown that the constraint effect can be modeled closely by using a finite element procedure based on the Biot poroelastic theory. Implications for low frequency barrier design are also discussed.

Improved Electrical Conductivity of a Carbon Nanotube Mat Composite Prepared by In-Situ Polymerization and Compression Molding with Compression Pressure

  • A fabrication method to improve the processability of thermoplastic carbon nanotube (CNT) mat composites was investigated by using in-situ polymerizable and low viscous cyclic butylene terephthalate oligomers. The electrical conductivity of the CNT mat composites strongly depended on the compression pressure, and the trend can be explained in terms of two cases, low and high compression pressure, respectively. High CNT mat content in the CNT mat composites and the surface of the CNT mat composites with fully contacted CNTs was achieved under high compression pressure, and direct contact between four probes and the surface of the CNT mat composites with fully contacted CNTs gave resistance of $2.1{\Omega}$. In this study the maximum electrical conductivity of the CNT mat composites, obtained under a maximum applied compression pressure of 27 MPa, was 11 904 S $m^{-1}$, where the weight fraction of the CNT mat was 36.5%.

2 상 Ti3Al-xNb 계 금속간 화합물들의 초소성 특성에 미치는 상분율의 영향 (Effects of α2/β Volume Fraction on the Superplastic Deformation)

  • A study has been made to investigate the boundary sliding and its accommodation mode with respect to the variation of $\alpha$$_2$/$eta$ volume fraction during superplastic deformation of two-phase Ti$_3$Al-xNb intermetallics. Step strain rate and load relaxation tests have been performed at 950, 970 and 99$0^{\circ}C$ to obtain the flow stress curves and to analyze the deformation characteristics by the theory of inelastic deformation. The results show that the grain matrix deformation and boundary sliding of the three intermetallics containing 21, 50 and 77% in $eta$ volume fractions are well described by the plastic deformation and viscous flow equations. Due to the equal accommodation of both $a^2$ and $\beta$ phases, the accommodation modes for fine-grained materials are in good agreement with the iso-strain rate models. The sliding resistance analyzed for the different boundaries is the lowest in the $\alpha$$_2$/$\alpha$$_2$ boundary, and increases in the order of $\alpha$$_2$/$\alpha$$_2$<< $\alpha$$_2$/$\beta$ = $\beta$/$\beta$, which plays an important role in controlling the superplasticity of the alloys with the various $\alpha$$_2$/$\beta$ phase ratio.

30ft급 요트 선체 주위의 점성유동 해석 (Viscous Flow Calculation around a 30 FT-class Sailing Yacht Hull)

  • Turbulent flows around a sailing yacht hull were calculated using CFD technique. Grid system was generated by using Gridgen package and Fluent package was used to calculate flows around a 30ft-class yacht hull designed by MOERI. The drafts at starboard and port sides of a yacht. when the hull was heeled, were determined by adjusting the same displacement in the generated grid system. Pressure distribution on the sailing yacht hull was obtained and the changes of drag and side force by heel and leeway variation were shown. The flow calculations have been carried out both with and without free surface, and keel and rudder were included for both cases. It was found that the calculated results with free surface gives better agreement with experiments than those without free surface, although there are still a room for the improvement in correct prediction of forces.
