  • In this study, a preliminary design method of the axial fan was systematically established based on the two-dimensional cascade theory. Flow deviation, lift coefficient, distribution of velocity and pressure coefficient on blade surfaces were predicted by an inviscid theory of Martensen method, which was also applied to select an airfoil of required performance in the present design process. The aerodynamic performance of designed blades can be predicted quickly and reasonably by using the through-flow calculation method in the preliminary design process. It would be recommendable to adopt three-dimensional viscous flow calculation at the final design refinement stage.

SPATIAL BEHAVIOR OF SOLUTION FOR THE STOKES FLOW EQUATION

  • In this paper, the equation of the transient Stokes flow of an incompressible viscous fluid is studied. Growth and decay estimates are established associating some appropriate cross sectional line and area integral measures. The method of the proof is based on a first-order differential inequality leading to an alternative of Phragm$\'{e}$n-Lindell$\"{o} $f type in terms of an area measure of the amplitude in question. In the case of decay, we also indicate how to bound the total energy.

  • This work is focused on the boundary layer and heat transfer characteristics of hydromagnetic flow over a stretching sheet with variable thickness. Steady, two dimensional, nonlinear, laminar flow of an incompressible, viscous and electrically conducting fluid over a stretching sheet with variable thickness and power law velocity in the presence of variable magnetic field and variable temperature is considered. Governing equations of the problem are converted into ordinary differential equations utilizing similarity transformations. The resulting non-linear differential equations are solved numerically by utilizing Nachtsheim-Swigert shooting iterative scheme for satisfaction of asymptotic boundary conditions along with fourth order Runge-Kutta integration method. Numerical computations are carried out for various values of the physical parameters and the effects over the velocity and temperature are analyzed. Numerical values of dimensionless skin friction coefficient and non-dimensional rate of heat transfer are also obtained.

  • In the development of new automobiles, the efforts to reduce environmental problems like air pollution have been risen. Blowby gas consists of about $20{\sim}35%$ of total amount of Hydrocarbon (HC), one of dangerous pollutants issuing from automobiles. A PCV valve is a very small component in an automotive engine but it is a very important part. Because that a PCV valve is used to control blowby gas and to recirculate it into a manifold automatically. Although it has very simple operating principle, designing a PCV valve is so difficult due to interaction between fluid and solid. In this study, our purpose is to develop a design program for a PCV valve and to verify its efficiency. Both Bernoulli equation and 4th order Runge-Kutta method were adopted to predict spool displacements and flow patterns. Comparing with experiments, it was found that both spool diameters and displacements were predicted well, however, flow rates showed a little differences because of the assumption of non viscous flow.

Effect of variable viscosity on combined forced and free convection boundary-layer flow over a horizontal plate with blowing or suction

  • The effects of variable viscosity, blowing or suction on mixed convection flow of a viscous incompressible fluid past a semi-infinite horizontal flat plate aligned parallel to a uniform free stream in the presence of the wall temperature distribution inversely proportional to the square root of the distance from the leading edge have been investigated. The equations governing the flow are transformed into a system of coupled non-linear ordinary differential equations by using similarity variables. The similarity equations have been solved numerically. The effect of the viscosity temperature parameter, the buoyancy parameter and the blowing or suction parameter on the velocity and temperature profiles as well as on the skin-friction coefficient and the Nusselt number are discussed.

  • The behavior of the work materials in the chip-tool interface in extremely high strain rates and temperatures is more that of viscous liquids than that of normal solid metals. In these circumstances the principles of fluid mechanics can be invoked to describe the metal flow in the neighborhood of the cutting edge. In the present paper an Eulerian finite element model is presented that simulates metal flow in the vicinity of the cutting edge when machining a low carbon steel with carbide cutting tool. The work material is assumed to obey visco-plastic (Bingham solid) constitutive law and Von Mises criterion. Heat generation is included in the model, assuming adiabatic conditions within each element. the mechanical and thermal properties of the work material are accepted to vary with the temperature. The model is based on the virtual work-stream function formulation, emphasis is given on analyzing the formation of the stagnant metal zone ahead of the cutting edge. The model predicts flow field characteristics such as material velocity effective stress and strain-rate distributions as well as built-up layer configuration

  • This numerical analysis uses the lifting surface method and frequency-domain panel method based on the linear compressible aerodynamic theory. Increased knowledge of flow conditions within mixed-flow fan should indicates means of improving performance of these turbomachines. Thus, only an approximate solution is obtained whose prime intent is to recognize the most significant characteristics of the "ideal" geometry. For a given set of operating condition, the flow conditions within mixed-flow fan depend on the geometry of the machine (three-dimensional flow effects) and on the properties of the fluid. But most treatments of the problem have been concerned with the two-dimensional flow effects for incompressible, non-viscous fluids. Interest in the field of mixed-flow fan resulted in the undertaking of a program to develop reliable design procedures that would avoid the need for lengthy development work.

점성유체에 분산된 타원형 야누스 입자의 자성 상호작용에 관한 직접수치해석 (Direct Simulation of the Magnetic Interaction of Elliptic Janus Particles Suspended in a Viscous Fluid)

  • 외부자기장에 의한 타원형 야누스 자성입자 사이의 자성 상호작용을 직접수치해석을 사용하여 분석하였다. 유한요소법에 기초한 가상영역법을 사용하여 입자계 유동해석을 수행하였고, 자기장 문제에서는 자성 포텐셜에 대한 지배방정식을 입자와 유체를 포함하는 전체영역에 대하여 풀어 자기장을 구하였다. 이 때 구해진 자기장으로부터 구한 맥스웰 응력을 사용하여 개별 입자에 작용하는 자기력이 계산된다. 입자의 운동과 최종적인 조립구조는 입자의 형상비, 개별 입자의 배향, 입자의 초기 분포에 크게 영향을 받는 것이 확인되었다. 또한 입자의 배향은 입자 주위의 유체 유동에도 영향을 주었다. 외부자기장에 의한 타원형 야누스 입자의 최종 조립구조는 앞서 언급한 인자들에 의해서 영향을 받은 것을 수치해석을 통해 확인할 수 있었다.

강제동요를 이용한 원형실린더 점성 롤댐핑 연구 (Study on the Viscous Roll Damping around Circular Cylinder Using Forced Oscillations)

  • 선박 및 해양구조물 설계에 있어 롤댐핑에 관한 문제는 유체점성과 현상자체의 비선형성으로 인해 공학자들에게 있어 난제로 남아있다. 본 연구에서는 강제동요방법을 이용하여 원형실린더의 점성 롤감쇠에 관한 연구를 수행하였다. 토크 센서를 이용하여 강제동요 시 발생하는 롤모멘트(roll moment)를 강제동요 주기별로 계측하였고 이를 실험식(empirical formula)과 비교 검토 하였다. 점성에 의한 전단력으로부터 계측된 토크의 크기가 상대적으로 작은 값임에도 불구하고 실험식으로부터 얻어진 계산값들과 정성적으로 유사한 결과를 보였고, 일부 주기에서는 정량적으로도 잘 일치하는 결과를 보였다. 또한, PIV 계측기법을 통해 원형실린더 벽면주위의 유동을 면밀히 관찰하였으며, 유체점성으로 인해 원형실린더 벽면근처에서 경계층이 형성되고 자유수면에서 원형실린더의 주기적인 강제회전동요로 인해 미소한 크기의 파가 생성(wave making)됨을 PIV 계측결과의 분석을 통해 확인하였다. 본 연구에서는 점성 롤감쇠로 인한 실험식의 적합성을 모형시험을 통해 확인하였고, PIV 계측기법을 통해 벽면주위의 유체점성으로 인한 조파현상을 입증하였다.

원심압축기의 유동해석을 위한 준삼차원 해석기법 (Flow Analysis of Centrifugal Compressor Using Quasi-Three-Dimensional Analysis)

  • This paper presents the analysis of flows through three different types of radial compressor impeller by using quasi-three-dimensional analysis method. The method obtains two-dimensional solution for velocity distribution on meridional plane, and then calculates approximately the static pressure distributions on blade surfaces. Finite difference method is used for the solutions of governing equations. The compressors have low level compression-ratio and 12 straight radial blades with no backsweep. The results are compared with experimental data and the results of three-dimensional inviscid analysis with those by finite element method. It is found that the agreements with experimental data are good for the cases where viscous effects are not dominant.
