  • The friction behavior of a 60-${\mu}m$-thick anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) film having cylindrical nanopores of 45-nm diameter was investigated as a function of impregnated oil viscosity ranging from 3.4 to 392.6 cSt. Reciprocating ball-on-flat sliding friction tests using a 1-mm-diameter steel ball as the counterpart were carried out with normal load ranging from 0.1 to 1 N in an ambient environment. The friction coefficient significantly decreased with an increase in the oil viscosity. The boundary lubrication film remained effectively under all test conditions when high-viscosity oil was impregnated, whereas it was easily destroyed when low-viscosity oil was impregnated. Thin plastic deformed layer patches were formed on the worn surface with high-viscosity oil without evidence of tribochemical reaction and transfer of counterpart material.

  • The characteristics of centrifugal pump performance according to fluid viscosity change were studied experimentally. A small volute pump with low specific speed was tested by changing the viscosity of an aqueous solution of sugar and glycerin, which is considered a Newtonian fluid. After finishing the test, the total head, shaft horsepower, and pump efficiency were compared with those of a water pump. The results are summarized as follows: (1) when the fluid viscosity is increased, the shut-off head shows very little change but the total head decreases gradually as the flow increases, and this makes the H-Q curve leaning rapidly, and (2) when the fluid viscosity is increased, the shaft horsepower shows very little change at the shutoff condition; however, the shaft horsepower increases more rapidly with an increase in the flow and viscosity.

  • The chemical identities of purified polysaccharide, methylan, were analyzed by various chemical methods. The polysaccharide contained 79%(w/w) sugar, 6% protein, and 16% organic acids such as uronic acid, pyruvic acid, and acetic acid. With proceeding fermentation, the acids content in methylan increased from 10% at 34 hr to 17% at 72 hr, and the viscosity of methylan in the same concentration also increased. The correlation between viscosity and acid content in methylan was studied using chemically or biologically modified methylan. Methylan with a high content of pyruvic acid exhibited a high apparent and an intrinsic ·viscosity. When the pyruvic acid content of methylan with the same content of uronic acid was increased 1%, apparent viscosity and intrinsic viscosity increased 290 cp and 6 dL/g, respectively. Methylan with a high content of uronic acid exhibited a high apparent and an intrinsic viscosity. When the uronic acid content of methylan with the same content of pyruvic acid was increased 1%, apparent viscosity and intrinsic viscosity increased 85 cp and 1.5 dL/g, respectively. It was found that the increased viscosity of methylan resulted from the increased content of organic acids in methylan, and pyruvic acid was more an important factor contributed to the increase of methylan viscosity than uronic acid.

  • Many construction projects adopt grouting technology to prevent the leakage of groundwater or to improve the shear strength of the ground. Recognition as a feasible field procedure dates back to 1925. Since then, developments and field use have increased rapidly. According to improvement of grout materials, theoretical study on grout penetration characteristics is demanded. Fluid of grout always tends to flow from higher hydraulic potential to lower one and the motion of grout is also a function of formation permeability. Viscosity of pout is changed by chemical action while grout moves through pores. Due to the increment of viscosity, permeability is decreased. Permeability is also reduced by grout particle deposits to the soil aggregates. In this paper, characteristics of new cement grout material that has been developed recently are studied: injectable volume of new grout material is tested in two different grain sizes of sands; and the method to calculate injectable volume of grout Is suggested with consideration of change in viscosity and clogging phenomena. The calculated values are compared with injection test results. Viscosity of new grout material is found to increase as an exponential function of time. And lumped parameter $\delta$ of new grout material to be used for assessing deposition characteristics is estimated by comparing deposit theory with injection test results considering different soil types and different injection pressures. Injection test results show that grout penetration rate is decreased by the increase of grout viscosity and clogging phenomena.

  • The feed temperature has an effect on the performance during desalination of seawater by membrane separation. When the permeate flux intends to increase using the waste heat, it is necessary to analyze the effect of feed temperature precisely on the membrane performance. The experiments were carried out to investigate the performance of membranes by varying the seawater temperature from $10^{\circ}C$ to $60^{\circ}C$. The increase of permeate flux with increase of feed temperature was interpreted as the change of water viscosity and the membrane itself. While the increase of permeate flux could be predicted by the viscosity change in case of nanoflitration membrane, there exists 30% difference between the experiment data and the prediction by the viscosity change in case of reverse osmosis (RO) membrane, which seems to be due to 8% decrease of the pore size in 60caused by the contraction of membrane with the increase of temperature. Therefore, the desalination of seawater should be carried out within the range that the elevation of temperature does not cause the alteration of membrane itself even for the purpose of increasing the permeate flux.

  • A soluble dietary fiber, $\beta$-glucan, contained in oat and barley has nutritional benefits such as hypocholesterolemic effects and influences blood glucose regulation. The contents of $\beta$-glucan in both cereals range from 3 to 7% with the exception of a certain barley genotype which contains up to 16% $\beta$-glucan. $\beta$-Glucan is distributed mainly in the cell walls of endosperm and the distal (bran) portion of kernel. Various procedures have been developed for increasing the extraction yield of $\beta$-glucan. Oat gum prepared with weak alkali extractionand alcohol proecipitation following protein removal usually contains 80% $\beta$-glucan.The most commonly used method for $\beta$-glucan quantitiation is an enzymatic procedure combining lichenase plus $\beta$-glucosidase followed by measuring the amount of glucos released by glucose oxidase-peroxidase treatment. The increase in foam-and emulsion-stabilizing capacity of $\beta$-glucan is due to the increase in viscosity of the aqueous phase. Therefore, $\beta$-glucan shows great potentials as a thickener and a stabilizer.

  • Natural castor oil was chemically reconstructed to extend the carbon chains by means of iso-reaction so as to improve the rheological behavior, by way of increasing the viscosity index and decreasing the pour point. The rheological and tribological characteristics of the reconstructed castor oil were comparatively investigated with those of the natural castor oil and several other vegetable oils and a mineral oil. The friction and wear test results on a four-ball machine indicate that the chemically reconstructed castor oil has considerably improved rheological and tribological properties as compared with the natural castor oil. It shows a greatly increase viscosity index and largely decreased pour point, which makes it applicable to low temperature lubrication. The chemically reconstructed castor oil even shows better tribological behavior than pentaerythritol ester or di-iso-capryl sebacate. However, it is still needed to increase the oxidation stability of the reconstructed castor oil.

  • When a circular cylinder near the plane fluid-interface of different viscosities is in parallel and normal motion, solutions of the Oseen equation are obtained. Classical image method with Faxen's integral form is used to satisfy the boundary conditions on the plane interface. Coefficients of drag and lift increase as a cylinder approaches to the interface. But drag-coefficients of parallel motions with viscosity-ratio less than unity are decreased slightly. They show monotonic increase with Reynolds number in case of parallel motion, but minimum values of drag coefficients in normal motion are appeared. On the other hand Stokes' solution are obtained by taking limits of low Reynolds number except the case of parallel motion with viscosity-ratio not equal to infinity.

  • Flow pulsation often causes vibration and noise in piping systems and therefore has been a troublesome concern for fluid system engineers. According to frequency increase in this paper under the influence wave form of velocity in springly flow and viscosity are drop coefficient of viscosity become increase so that impedance and resistance. The transient variations of flow rate are measured by a modified impedance tube method which is realized by virtue of the present analytical technique. At pipe line in order to eliminate vibration, confirm happened intermittently impedance characteristics. We make a test and frequency analysis and have to minimize obstructive component at hydraulic circuit.

  • Generally, the base concrete for manufacturing the flowing concrete has to increase the fine aggregate content or adjust the fines content prevent the concrete from segeration, However, it may not only increase the cost, but cause the inconvenience in production of base concrete. In this paper, the experiments is performed on the superplasticizer which is used for base concrete by mixing viscosity agents and AE admixtures. According to the results, it shows that it is possible to manufacture a flowing, non segregation, high durability and economical concrete in the field without increasing the fine aggregate content of base concrete, when the superplasticizer are mixed with viscosity agents and AE admixtures in an appropriate proportion.
