The angular dispersion-type non-scanning Fabry-Perot was applied to an ethanol-water mixture in order to investigate its acoustic properties such as the sound velocity and the absorption coefficient. The scattered light from the mixture was analyzed by using the charge-coupled-device area detector, which made the measurement time much shorter than that obtained by using the conventional scanning tandem multi-pass Fabry-Perot interferometer. The sound velocity showed a deviation from ultrasonic sound velocities at low temperatures accompanied by the increase in the absorption coefficient, indicating acoustic dispersion due to the coupling between the acoustic waves and some relaxation process. Based on a simplified viscoelastic theory, the temperature dependence of the relaxation time was obtained. The addition of water molecules to ethanol reduced the relaxation time, consistent with dielectric measurements. The present study showed that the angular dispersion-type Fabry-Perot interferometer combined with an area detector could be a very powerful tool in the real-time monitoring of the acoustic properties of condensed matter.

Lip seals, important components in many hydraulic devices, dissipate energy through friction, resulting in power loss. This study contributes to an understanding of lip seal friction by further exploring the connections between friction behavior, viscoelastic properties of robber and viscous properties of the lubricant. Experiments haven been conducted for short stroke oscillations, where these connections are quite strong. Sliding friction experiments at a variety of pressures, temperatures and oscillation rates (for different seal materials, surface roughnesses and lubricant viscosities) are examined. Speculative explanations are suggested for conditions under which friction maxima and frictional vibrations occur.
Linear viscoelastic properties of 11 types of EPDM and 1 type of EPM rubbers have been measured at $210^{\circ}C$, using a RDS(Rheometrics dynamic spectrometer). The data base, i.e., complex viscosity, storage modulus, loss modulus, loss tangent and relaxation spectrum of the sample should be useful for rubber blending and compounding.
This study investigates the feasibility of retrofitting an existing building by connecting the existing building to a new building using connecting dampers. The new building is base-isolated and viscoelastic dampers are assigned as connecting dampers. Scaled models are tested under three different earthquake records using a shaking table. The existing building and the new building are 9 and 8 stories respectively. The existing building model shows more than 3% increase in damping ratio. The maximum dynamic responses and the root mean square responses of the existing building model to earthquakes are substantially reduced by at least 20% and 59% respectively. Further, numerical models are developed by conducting time-history analysis to predict the performance of the proposed seismic mitigation system. The predictions agree well with the test results. Numerical simulations are carried out to optimize the properties of connecting dampers and base isolators. It is demonstrated that more than 50% of the peak responses can be reduced by properly adjusting the properties of connecting dampers and base isolators.

In this study, two types of chitosan-catechol polymers (a-CP and b-CP) were synthesized and mixed with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and sodium tetraborate decahydrate (Na2B4O7·10H2O) to form hydrogels. The characteristics of these polymers were tuned by varying the pH during their syntheses, and their structures were characterized using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. Rheological and self-healing properties of hydrogels were evaluated. As a result, the viscoelastic modulus was improved due to the increased functional group content, and the self-healing property was excellent regardless of the functional group content.
The properties of the rubber composites containing a silane and silica were evaluated by changing the mixing time and temperature, in order to find the optimum mixing conditions. Characteristics of the compounds were evaluated after mixing at $120^{\circ}C$, $140^{\circ}C$, and $160^{\circ}C$ with various mixing time. With increasing of mixing time, mooney viscosity decreased while the bound rubber contents of the compounds increased. Viscosity rise by increased mixing time was bigger at low temperature and the higher the mixing temperature the faster in the formation of bound rubber. With lower mixing temperature of $120^{\circ}C$, cross-linking rate was almost constant. Dynamic viscoelastic properties and dispersity of the compound showed that dispersion of ingredients and reaction was not sufficient with the mixing time of less than 10min. On the contrary, with high temperature, it was obvious that good dynamic and physical properties could be obtained due to sufficient coupling reaction, however it was thought this high temperature is not optimum because of sensitive cross-linking rate and physical properties and excessive formation of bound rubber. Consequently, it was confirmed that the mixing condition of 10min at $140^{\circ}C$ was optimum for the silane coupling reaction and dispersion of functionalized S-SBR containing silica and silane.
The effect of acetylated rice (AR) starch at different concentrations (0, 4, 6, and 8%) on rheological properties of surimi sols and gels was studied. Dynamic frequency sweeps of surimi-AR starch sols at $10^{\circ}C$ showed that the magnitudes of storage moduli (G') decreased with an increase in starch concentration while those of tan ${\delta}$ increased, indicating that the effect of AR starch on the viscoelastic properties of surimi sols depended on starch concentration. In general, the G' thermograms of surimi sols showed the similar sol-gel transition pattern and they were also influenced by the addition of AR starch. The presence of AR starch in the surimi gel system reduced the gel strength and expressible moisture content (EMC). Surimi-AR starch gels showed better freeze-thaw stability compared to the control (0% starch concentration). The effect of AR starch on the rheological properties of surimi sols and gels appeared to be related to the swelling ability of starch granules in the presence of limited water available for starch.
The dispersion of organoclay in ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM) matrix was correlated with the rheological and swelling properties of nanocomposites. X-ray diffraction pattern (XRD) and transmission electron microscopic (TEM) analysis exhibited the disordered-intercalated structure of EPDM/organoclay nanocomposite. The extent of the disordered phase increased with increasing organoclay content up to a limiting value of 3 wt% after which equilibrium tended towards intercalation. The dispersion effect of organoclay in EPDM matrix was clarified by the physicochemical properties like rheological response and swelling thermodynamics in toluene. The increase in viscoelastic properties of EPDM nanocomposite with increasing organoclay content up to 3 wt%, followed by a subsequent decrease up to 4 wt%, was correlated in terms of the disordered and ordered states of the dispersed nano-clay sheets. Swelling measurements revealed that the change in entropy of the swelling increased with the increase in disorder level but decreased with the increase in intercalation level of organoclay in the disordered-intercalated nanocomposite. The increase in solvent uptake was comparable with the free volume in EPDM matrix upon inclusion of silicate particles, whereas the inhibition in solvent uptake for higher organoclay loading was described by bridging flocculation.

Thermoplastic elastomer gels, which has molecular networks composed of a microphase-separated multiblock copolymer swollen to a large extent by a low volatility mid-block selective solvent such as white oil have various applications. In this particular study, the effect of several network-forming nanoscale fillers such as two different graphite particles and carbon nanotube on the properties of TPE gels prepared from a microphaseordered poly[styrene-b-(ethylene-co-butylene)-b-styrene] (SEBS) triblock copolymer with an EB compatible white oil was studied. The linear viscoelastic behavior, sol-gel transition, x-ray diffraction and mechanical properties were discussed. The properties of thermoplastic elastomer gels hybrid with graphite prepared by mixing Poly(styrene-b-ethylene-co-butylene)-b-styrene) with paraffin oil and different amount of expandable graphite were found to increase the mechanical properties at only lower graphite concentration but tends to decrease when paraffin oil/SEBS ratio is lower. The gelation temperature is the same for all TPE gels with different amounts of graphite. Both storage (G') modulus loss (G") modulus of TPE gels slightly increase with addition of graphite.
The flow properties of binder latices for paper coating were investigated, together with dynamic viscoelastic properties of latex films and electron micrographs of latices, under various conditions. The amphoteric latex, binder pigment latex and anionic latex were used in this work. The amphoteric latex has both anionic and cationic functional group on its surface. The binder-pigment with a core-shell structure has dual functions : plastic pigment and binder. The low shear viscosity of binder latices and clay slurry were measured with Brookfield vis cometer. At low-shear rates. the viscosity decreased with increasing particle size of latex. On the amphoteric latex surface, the carboxyl groups are assumed to be fully dissociated over the region of pH 9~12, but the density of negative groups seems to be increased because of the gradual decrease in the degree of dissociation of amino groups. Since the apparent particle size of latex increases with surface charge, the electroviscous effect can be observed. On the anionic latex surface, the charge density is assumed to be nearly constant above pH 8. However, below pH 8 the coagulation of particles could be observed probably because of the decrease in the charge density.
