  • Virtualization has recently come under the spotlight as an important emerging technology. The technology was initially focused on services rather than the effective use of the system when it was developed in the 1960s. Now, following with technological advancement, virtualization is used on servers based on x86. The biggest merit by far of this technology is economic. Virtualization enables server integration, which can cut operating expenses (including personnel expenses) since it costs less to purchase, power and maintain multiple servers if they are integrated by the virtualization technology. This study examines the trend of virtualization technology and suggests a roadmap for future server integration.

  • In this paper, we analyze the research trend and problems of the existing virtualization technology and present the most applicable virtualization technology in order to apply the technology to the operation of novel reliable networks. By using the virtualization technology, there is advantage in that the utilization of resource becomes higher and maintenance cost goes down. While, from the security perspective, there exist advantage in using the virtualization, it also introduces new vulnerabilities due to the adoption. Thus it is necessary to analyze the problem and establish the strategy to solve it. Therefore we derive threat elements to the virtualized system, analyze and describe the virtualization security policy.

  • Virtualization technology has been applied in IA-32 based server or desktop systems. Recently it has been applied in ARM based mobile systems. Virtualization technology provides many useful features that are not possible in operating system level such as isolation, interposition, encapsulation and portability. In this research, we implement an ARM based VMM(Virtual Machine Monitor) by using the following techniques. First, we use "emulation" to virtualize the processor. Second, we use "shadow page tables" to virtualize the memory. Finally, we use a simple "pass-through I/O" to virtualize the device. Currently the VMM runs ARM Linux kernel 3.4.4 on a BeagleBoard-xM, and we evaluated the performance of the VMM using lmbench and dhrystone. The result of the evaluation shows that our VMM is slower than Xen on ARM that is implemented using paravirtualization but has good performance among the VMMs using full-virtualization.

  • This paper is a survey on the advancement of virtualization technology. Virtualization of resources was an inevitable path in modern computer systems. This abstraction of hardware allowed the decoupling of the operating system that manages the hardware and applications' requirements by adding a layer between them. It also led to the application-centric view of computing and light virtual machines, where each represents a computer networking device. As virtualization technology ripens, the performance of virtual machines can only improve. This paper will be introducing how virtualization technology has evolved from Xen to LightVM and Firecracker.

  • Cloud computing refers to borrow IT resources as needed by leveraging Internet technology and pay as much as you used by supporting real-time scalability depending on the service load. Virtualization which is the main technology of cloud computing is a technology that server, storage and hardware are regarded as not separate system but one system area and are allocated as needed. However, the security mechanisms provided by virtualized environments are difficult to cope with the traditional security mechanisms, having basic levels of visibility, control and audit function, on which the server is designed to monitor the traffic between the servers. In this paper, the security vulnerabilities of virtualization are analysed in the cloud computing environment and cloud virtualization security recommendations are proposed.

  • Virtualization technology is characterized by the ability to isolate the user's system environment and to support the computing resources flexibly and extensively on demand. However, virtualization technology of cloud computing, which is already well known, must overload the guest OS and the hypervisor to manage it. Container technology is emerging to solve such OS-based virtualization problems. This technology can isolate the processes under which the application is running, thus creating a virtualization-like environment with minimal overhead. In this work, we construct a container-based education practice system using Docker instead of the existing cloud-based environment. To do this, we analyze the requirements for the establishment of the training practice environment. We also analyze the functions of the container and study the method to meet the requirements. This can take advantage of the existing flexible and scalable cloud computing. Also, it maximizes the availability of limited resources by minimizing the performance load.

  • Effective profiling diagnoses the failure of the system and informs risk. If a failure in the target system occurs, it is impossible to diagnose more than one of the exiting tools. In this respect, monitoring of the system based on virtualization is useful. We present in this paper a monitoring framework that uses the characteristics of hardware virtualization to prevent side-effects from a target guest, and uses dynamic binary instrumentation with instruction-level trapping based on hardware virtualization to achieve efficiency and flexibility. We also present examples of some applications that use this framework. The framework provides tracing of guest kernel function, memory dump, and debugging that uses GDB stub with GDB remote protocol. The experimental evaluation of our prototype shows that the monitoring framework incurs at most 2% write memory performance overhead for end users.

  • Following research proposes "Virtualization of Smart Cards (ViSCa)" which is a security system that aims to provide a multi-device platform for the deployment of services that require a strong security protocol, both for the access & authentication and execution of its applications and focuses on analyzing Virtualization of Smart Cards (ViSCa) platform-based mobile payment service by comparing with other similar cases. At the present day, the appearance of new ICT, the diffusion of new user devices (such as smartphones, tablet PC, and so on) and the growth of internet penetration rate are creating many world-shaking services yet in the most of these applications' private information has to be shared, which means that security breaches and illegal access to that information are real threats that have to be solved. Also mobile payment service is, one of the innovative services, has same issues which are real threats for users because mobile payment service sometimes requires user identification, an authentication procedure and confidential data sharing. Thus, an extra layer of security is needed in their communication and execution protocols. The Virtualization of Smart Cards (ViSCa), concept is a holistic approach and centralized management for a security system that pursues to provide a ubiquitous multi-device platform for the arrangement of mobile payment services that demand a powerful security protocol, both for the access & authentication and execution of its applications. In this sense, Virtualization of Smart Cards (ViSCa) offers full interoperability and full access from any user device without any loss of security. The concept prevents possible attacks by third parties, guaranteeing the confidentiality of personal data, bank accounts or private financial information. The Virtualization of Smart Cards (ViSCa) concept is split in two different phases: the execution of the user authentication protocol on the user device and the cloud architecture that executes the secure application. Thus, the secure service access is guaranteed at anytime, anywhere and through any device supporting previously required security mechanisms. The security level is improved by using virtualization technology in the cloud. This virtualization technology is used terminal virtualization to virtualize smart card hardware and thrive to manage virtualized smart cards as a whole, through mobile cloud technology in Virtualization of Smart Cards (ViSCa) platform-based mobile payment service. This entire process is referred to as Smart Card as a Service (SCaaS). Virtualization of Smart Cards (ViSCa) platform-based mobile payment service virtualizes smart card, which is used as payment mean, and loads it in to the mobile cloud. Authentication takes place through application and helps log on to mobile cloud and chooses one of virtualized smart card as a payment method. To decide the scope of the research, which is comparing Virtualization of Smart Cards (ViSCa) platform-based mobile payment service with other similar cases, we categorized the prior researches' mobile payment service groups into distinct feature and service type. Both groups store credit card's data in the mobile device and settle the payment process at the offline market. By the location where the electronic financial transaction information (data) is stored, the groups can be categorized into two main service types. First is "App Method" which loads the data in the server connected to the application. Second "Mobile Card Method" stores its data in the Integrated Circuit (IC) chip, which holds financial transaction data, which is inbuilt in the mobile device secure element (SE). Through prior researches on accept factors of mobile payment service and its market environment, we came up with six key factors of comparative analysis which are economic, generality, security, convenience(ease of use), applicability and efficiency. Within the chosen group, we compared and analyzed the selected cases and Virtualization of Smart Cards (ViSCa) platform-based mobile payment service.
