  • Face tracking and recognition are difficult problems because the face is a non-rigid object. If the system tries to track or recognize the unknown face continuously, it can be more hard problems. In this paper, we propose the method to track and to recognize the face of the unknown person on video sequences using linear combination of nonlinear manifold models that is constructed in the system. The arbitrary input face has different similarities with different persons in system according to its shape or pose. Do we can approximate the new nonlinear manifold model for the input face by estimating the similarities with other faces statistically. The approximated model is updated at each frame for the input face. Our experimental results show that the proposed method is efficient to track and recognize for the arbitrary person.

  • Recently, the JCT-VC is developing the next generation video coding standard that is called HEVC. HEVC has adopted many coding technologies increasing coding efficiency. For chroma interpolation, DCT-based interpolation filter showing better performance than the linear filter in H.264/AVC was adopted in HEVC. In this paper, a combined filter that utilizes the FIR filter and the linear filter in H.264/AVC is proposed to increase coding efficiency. When the proposed method is compared with DCT-based interpolation filter, the experimental results for various sequences show that the average BD-rate improvements on chroma U and V components are 0.9% and 1.1%, respectively, in the high efficiency case of random access structure, those on U and V components are 1.1% and 1.1%, respectively, in the low complexity case of random access structure, those on U and V components are 0.9% and 1.4%, respectively, in the high efficiency case of low delay structure, and those on U and V components are 1.8% and 1.8%, respectively, in the low complexity case of low delay structure.

  • The interpolation is used in many image processing applications such as image enhancement, de-interlacing/scan-rate conversion, wavelet transforms based on the lifting scheme, and so on. Among these, de-interlacing and scan-rate conversion are proposed for the digital TV applications. The de-interlacing algorithm can be classified into two categories. The first one uses only one field, called intra-field de-interlacing, and the other uses multiple field, called inter-field de-interlacing. In this paper, an efficient de-interlacing algorithm using spatial domain information is proposed far the interpolation of interlaced images. By efficiently estimating the directional correlations, improved interpolation accuracy has been achieved. In addition, the proposed method is simply structured and is easy to implement. Extensive simulations conducted for various images and video sequences have shown the efficacy of the proposed method with significant improvement over the previous intra-field do-interlacing methods in terms of the objective image quality as well as the subjective image quality.

  • Recent prevalence of progressive scan display such as LCD TV demands the quality improvement of existing deinterlacing techniques that convert interlaced scan images including HDTV broadcasting to progressive scan images. In this paper, we proposea motion adaptive deinterlacing technique which can be used for spatial methods, temporal methods, and the spatial-temporal methods can be used for the deinterlacing techniques selectively based on the threshold values calculated by the statistics of motion in the video contents. We also propose an improved spatial deinterlacing technique that adaptively use M-ELA and DOI based on the slant of edges that are obtained by Sobel operation. The improved picture quality of the proposed algorithm is confirmed by objective and subjective quality tests on many test image sequences.

  • A lane detection system is one of the major components of intelligent vehicle systems. Difficulties in lane detection mainly come from not only various weather conditions but also a variety of special environment. This paper describes a simple and stable method for the broken lane tracking in various environments. Probabilistic Hough Transform (PHT) and the Least-square method (LSM) are used to track and correct the lane orientation. For the efficiency of the proposed method, two regions of interest (ROIs) are placed in the lower part of each image, where lane marking areas usually appear with less intervention in our system view. By testing in both a set of static images and video sequences, the experiments showed that the proposed approach yielded robust and reliable results.

  • In most digital imaging applications, high-resolution images or videos are usually desired for later image processing and analysis. The image signal obtained from general imaging system occurs image degradation during the process of image acquirement caused by the optics, physical constraints and the atmosphere effects. Super-resolution reconstruction, one of the solution to address this problem, is image reconstruction technique that produces a high-resolution image from several low-resolution frames in video sequences. In this paper, we propose an improved super-resolution method using Projection onto Convex Sets (POCS) method based on Shift & Add (S&A). The image using conventional algorithms is sensitive to noise. To solve this problem, we propose a fusion algorithm of S&A and POCS. Also we solve the problem using BLPF (Butterworth Low-pass Filter) in frequency domain as optical blur. Our method is robust to noise and has sharpness enhancement ability. Experimental results show that the proposed super-resolution method has better resolution enhancement performance than other super-resolution methods.

  • Mobile robots are used for years as a valuable research and educational tool in form of available open-platform designs and Do-It-Yourself kits. Rapid development and costs reduction of Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAV) and ground based mobile robots in recent years allowed researchers to utilize them as an affordable research platform. Despite of recent developments in the area of ground and airborne robotics, only few examples of Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) platforms targeted for research purposes can be found. Aim of this paper is to present the development of open-design USV drone with integrated multi-level control hardware architecture. Proposed catamaran - type water surface drone enables direct control over wireless radio link, separate development of algorithms for optimal propulsion control, navigation and communication with the ground-based control station. Whole design is highly modular, where each component can be replaced or modified according to desired task, payload or environmental conditions. Developed USV is planned to be utilized as a part of the system for detection and identification of marine and lake waste. Cameras mounted to the USV would record sea or lake surfaces, and recorded video sequences and images would be processed by state-of-the-art computer vision and machine learning algorithms in order to identify and classify marine and lake waste.

  • Rate-constrained coding is one of the many coding-efficiency oriented tools of H.264/AVC, but mode decision process of RDO(Rate distortion optimization) requires high computational complexity. Many fast mode decision algorithms have been proposed to reduce the computational complexity of mode decision. In this paper, we propose two algorithms for reduction of mode decision in H.264/AVC, which are the fast reference frame selection and selective intra prediction mode decision. Fast reference frame selection is efficient for inter predication and selective intra prediction mode decision can effectively reduce excessive calculation load of intra prediction mode decision. The simulation results showed that the proposed methods could reduce the encoding time of the overall sequences by 44.63% on average without any noticeable degradation of the coding efficiency.

  • This paper proposes an approach of a novel facial expression recognition to deal with different intensities to improve a performance of a facial expression recognition. Various expressions and intensities of each person make an affect to decrease the performance of the facial expression recognition. The effect of different intensities of facial expression has been seldom focused on. In this paper, a face expression template and an expression-intensity distribution model are introduced to recognize different facial expression intensities. These techniques, facial expression template and expression-intensity distribution model contribute to improve the performance of facial expression recognition by describing how the shift between multiple interest points in the vicinity of facial parts and facial parts varies for different facial expressions and its intensities. The proposed method has the distinct advantage that facial expression recognition with different intensities can be very easily performed with a simple calibration on video sequences as well as still images. Experimental results show a robustness that the method can recognize facial expression with weak intensities.

  • In this paper, we propose a simple and efficient algorithm for head pose estimation using a single camera. First, four subimages are obtained from the camera image for face feature extraction. These subimages are used as feature templates. The templates are then tracked by Kalman filtering, and camera projective matrix is computed by the projective mapping between the templates and their coordinate in the 3D coordinate system. And the user's face pose is estimated from the projective mapping between the user's face and image plane. The accuracy and the robustness of our technique is verified on the experimental results of several real video sequences.
