Cybersickness is a symptom of dizziness that occurs while experiencing Virtual Reality (VR) technology and it is presumed to occur mainly by crosstalk between the sensory and cognitive systems. However, since the sensory and cognitive systems cannot be measured objectively, it is difficult to measure cybersickness. Therefore, methodologies for measuring cybersickness have been studied in various ways. Traditional studies have collected answers to questionnaires or analyzed EEG data using machine learning algorithms. However, the system relying on the questionnaires lacks objectivity, and it is difficult to obtain highly accurate measurements with the machine learning algorithms. In this work, we apply Deep Neural Network (DNN) deep learning algorithm for objective cybersickness measurement from EEG data. We also propose a data preprocessing for learning and network structures allowing us to achieve high performance when learning EEG data with the deep learning algorithms. Our approach provides cybersickness measurement with an accuracy up to 98.88%. Besides, we analyze video characteristics where cybersickness occurs by examining the video segments causing cybersickness in the experiments. We discover that cybersickness happens even in unusually persistent changes in the darkness such as the light in a room keeps switching on and off.
This paper presents a novel 360-degree video streaming system for large-scale immersive displays and its ongoing implementation. Recent VR systems aim to provide a service for a single viewer on HMD. However, the proposed 360-degree video streaming system enables multiple viewers to explore immersive contents on a large-scale immersive display. The proposed 360-degree video streaming system is being developed in 3 research phases, with the final goal of providing 6DoF. Currently, the phase 1: implementation of the 3DoF 360-degree video streaming system prototype is finished. The implemented prototype employs subpicture-based viewport-dependent streaming technique, and it achieved bit-rate saving of about 80% and decoding speed up of 543% compared to the conventional viewport-independent streaming technique. Additionally, this paper demonstrated the implemented prototype on UCSB AlloSphere, the large-scale instrument for immersive media art exhibition.

Along with the expectation about 5G network commercialization, interests in realistic and immersive media industries such as virtual reality (VR) are increasing. However, most of studies on VR still focus on video technologies instead of factors for popularity and consumption. Thus, the main objective of this research is to identify meaningful factors, which affect the view counts of VR videos and to provide business implications of the content strategies for VR video creators and service providers. Using a regression analysis with 700 VR videos, this study tries to find major factors that affect the view counts of VR videos. As a result, user assessment factors such as number of likes and sicknesses have a strong influence on the view counts. In addition, the result shows that both general information factors (video length and age) and content characteristic factors (series, one source multi use (OSMU), and category) are all influential factors. The findings suggest that it is necessary to support recommendation and curation based on user assessments for increasing popularity and diffusion of VR video streaming.
In an era where non-face-to-face meetings become common, eXtended Reality(XR) is rapidly developing and filling areas that are not satisfied in online meetings based on existing photos/video method. In particular, general users are also able to easily access and use HMD-type mixed reality devices. However, the basic operations applied in HMD-type in Mixed Reality(MR) with hands as the main input tool do not have a standardized system, and each manufacturer operates in a separate response to each other's hand movements. Therefore, this study considered that a systematic hand motion matching system considering the usability and efficiency of operations performed in mixed reality was necessary, and conducted a study to clarify this. First, the basic operation performed in the MR environment and its attributes were investigated, and at the same time, the structure of the hand and the attributes of the possible hand movements were identified. Based on the identified properties, it is intended to present a system that can intuitively and efficiently match basic operation properties in the MR environment with subtle operation properties according to the structure/context of the hand.
360 VR video systems has become important to provide immersive effect for viewers. The system consists of stitching, projection, compression, inverse projection, viewport extraction. In this paper, an efficient luminance compensation technique for 360 VR video sequences, where feature extraction and histogram equalization algorithms are utilized. The proposed luminance compensation algorithm enhance the performance of stitching in 360 VR system. The simulation results showed that the proposed technique is useful to increase the quality of the displayed image.
It seems that social distrust toward morality of video games has not been deducted even the influence of video game has increased drastically for last few decades. To rationalize the identity of video game and its social legitimacy, this paper first considered video game genre as a new art form. By doing so, we could derive various aesthetical and moral issues to dispute in modern society. Secondly, by considering former issues, this study could figure out moral vulnerabilities of the genre according to its own form, by categorizing them into virtual reality, interactivity and simulation. To suggest most effective way to overcome its immorality by functionalize social feedbacks which elaborately designed based on John Dewey's pragmatist aesthetics and immoralism.

Spherical videos, which are also called 360-degree videos, have become increasingly popular due to the rapid development of virtual reality technology. However, the large amount of data in such videos is a huge challenge for existing transmission system. To use the existing encode framework, it should be converted into a 2D image plane by using a specific projection format, e.g. the equi-rectangular projection (ERP) format. The existing high-efficiency video coding standard (HEVC) can effectively compress video content, but its enormous computational complexity makes the time spent on compressing high-frame-rate and high-resolution 360-degree videos disproportionate to the benefits of compression. Focusing on the ERP format characteristics of 360-degree videos, this work develops a fast decision algorithm for predicting the coding unit depth interval and adaptive mode decision for intra prediction mode. The algorithm makes full use of the video characteristics of the ERP format by dealing with pole and equatorial areas separately. It sets different reference blocks and determination conditions according to the degree of stretching, which can reduce the coding time while ensuring the quality. Compared with the original reference software HM-16.16, the proposed algorithm can reduce time consumption by 39.3% in the all-intra configuration, and the BD-rate increases by only 0.84%.
Immersive media videos, such as panorama and 360-degree videos, must provide a sense of realism as if the user visited the space in the video, so they should be able to represent the reality of the real world. However, in panorama and 360-degree videos, objects appear to overlap or disappear due to parallax between cameras, and such parallax distortion may interfere with immersion of the user's content. Accordingly, although many video stitching algorithms have been proposed to overcome parallax distortion, parallax distortion still occurs due to the low performance of the Object detection module and limitations of the Seam generation method. Therefore, this paper analyzes the limitations of the existing video stitching technology and proposes a method for detecting and correcting parallax distortion of video stitching using the LDPM (Local Differential Pixel Mean) image evaluation method that overcomes the limitations of the video stitching technique.

Ultra High Definition(hereafter UHD), Next-generation video technology, was quickening in the request of many years of the recipient and the authors who have been towards the higher sense of reality. The change of the medium has resulted in a mutation in the detailed content and the point of view overlooking the world as evidenced through the history. Thus the emergence of UHD will also be expected to require to manufacture unique technology. Therefore, this paper, especially in the documentary among the video content, tries to study the changes in the manufacturing process by UHD video technology. Moreover UHD video screen technology such as high resolution tries to analyse for the fitness for purpose of the documentary that transmission of the accuracy and the change from a documentary video production. In addition, I try to explore the improvement in the choice of shooting material expected to be a problem, even for the advance of the work on the second half and backup according to the enormous data. We derive the developmental aspects that UHD video technology in documentary production is brought about by the research plan described above. It is intended to contribute to the development of content production with the development of technology.
Recently, Many 3D augmented reality games that provide strengthened immersive have appeared in the 3D game environment. In this article, we describe a barehanded interaction method based on human hand gestures for augmented reality games. First, feature points are extracted from input video streams. Point features are tracked and motion of moving objects are computed. The shape of the motion trajectories are used to determine whether the motion is intended gestures. A long smooth trajectory toward one of virtual objects or menus is classified as an intended gesture and the corresponding action is invoked. To prove the validity of the proposed method, we implemented two simple augmented reality applications: a gesture-based music player and a virtual basketball game. In the music player, several menu icons are displayed on the top of the screen and an user can activate a menu by hand gestures. In the virtual basketball game, a virtual ball is bouncing in a virtual cube space and the real video stream is shown in the background. An user can hit the virtual ball with his hand gestures. From the experiments for three untrained users, it is shown that the accuracy of menu activation according to the intended gestures is 94% for normal speed gestures and 84% for fast and abrupt gestures.
