  • Ability of understanding students' ideas and thinking is critical to teachers' professional growth. In this study, 'pedagogical reasoning' was conceptualized as teachers' reasoning ability of students' misconceptions and possible causes of misconceptions when they hear and observe students' science discourses. To investigate elementary pre-service teachers' pedagogical reasoning levels, children's science discourses on light reflection and electric circuit were video recorded and 43 pre-service elementary teachers were asked to identify children's misconceptions and possible causes of misconceptions after watching the video clips. In conclusion, pedagogical reasoning levels of pre-service elementary teachers were not high enough, showing significant difference in light reflection and electric circuit. Possible explanations of this difference and educational implications were discussed.

  • The advanced techniques for video processing and computer graphics enables a sign language education system to appear. the system is capable of showing a sign language motion for an arbitrary sentence using the captured video clips of sign language words. In this paper, a method is suggested which generates the frames between the last frame of a word and the first frame of its following word in order to animate hand motion. In our method, we find hand locations and angles which are required for in between frame generation, capture and store the hand images at those locations and angles. The inbetween frames generation is simply a task of finding a sequence of hand angles and locations. Our method is computationally simple and requires a relatively small amount of disk space. However, our experiments show that inbetween frames for the presentation at about 15fps (frame per second) are achieved so tat the smooth animation of hand motion is possible. Our method improves on previous works in which computation cost is relativey high or unnecessary images are generated.

  • The methods used in this study included investigation of media facades used for landmarks in downtown areas in previous studies, visits to these areas, and recording of media facades. The changes in the colors or the size of buildings were analyzed among the recorded cases and 12 of these cases were selected for further study. The sensibility preference of the media facades was evaluated by sorting the 12 kinds of media facades, and providing them as materials to a group of 60 participants (40 undergraduate and 20 graduate students majoring in architecture and design) consisting of an equal proportion of males and females. This study addressed the following four_stage questions: 1) Five questions of recognition evaluation about media facades and the cognitive evaluation items of emotional vocabulary and color preference in each research case; 2) sensibility preference items regarding the media facade color design; and 3) design evaluation items of the media facades; 4) Video clips and still images were recorded from a middle distance at 7p.m to 11p.m. in central New York, Singapore, Seoul, and Beijing. The participants looked at the changes in colors through the video clips in each case and evaluated their preferences through 23 pairs of emotional vocabulary items using system dynamics. Construction of an emotional vocabulary followed, based on previous studies about media facades and color design. To evaluate the sensibility preference and the perceived representative colors of the media facade, this study suggests new emotional responses that depended on the color emotional vocabulary of light in the LED lighting technical evaluation methodology. A media facade with a moving change of colors, unlike a fixed landscape color design, suggests a new communication method based on architectural factors. New architectural color coordination can be presented for urban landscapes at night. Designs that factor in the pedestrians' emotional vocabulary or preference should take precedence over the use of high luminance and various colors.

  • This paper measured whether neural and behavior responses to attention-emotion task were reflected to emotion regulation capacities. For this purpose, Nineteen healthy right-handed graduates participated in the emotion-attention task three times for three days. Before and after the negative and positive video clips were shown, the participants performed emotion-attention task. EEG and response time were recorded during emotion-attention task. There was positive correlation between ERP P100 and P300 component. The larger the P100 amplitudes at the specific positions, the longer the P300 latencies at these same positions during attention-emotion task. The longer the P300 latencies at the specific positions, the longer the delay in response time. Also, there is and individual differences in ERP components and response time during attention-emotion integration task. Individuals who had lower amplitude and shorter latency of ERP showed faster response time during attention-emotion task, regardless of the type of video clips. This characteristic was interpreted to the lower emotional controls due to premature response for target identification.

  • This study aims to explore central and peripheral beliefs of mathematics teachers in the context of teaching and learning. For this purpose, this study analyzed teacher noticing of 8 mathematics teachers who are in-service in terms of mathematical beliefs using video-clips of math lessons. When the teachers in the video-clips seemed to have a teaching and learning problem, teachers who adopt noticing critized the classroom situation by reflecting his or her own mathematical beliefs and suggested alternatives. In addition, through noticing analysis, teachers' mathematical beliefs reflected in specific topics such as student participation in teaching and learning were compared to reveal their individual central and peripheral beliefs. Through these research results, this study proposed a model that extracts the central and peripheral beliefs of math teachers from the constraints of the teaching and learning context using noticing analysis. Additionally, it was possible to observe the teacher decision-making and expertise of mathematics teachers.

  • Purpose: To investigate the effect of action observation training on the muscle onset time and symmetrical use of rectus femoris(RF) and gastrocnemius medialis(GCM) during sit-to-stand (STS). Methods: Sixteen patients with stroke entered a single-blind trial and were randomly assigned to the experimental(Action) or control(Landscape) groups. Those in the Action observation group watched video clips showing specific movement and strategies to STS, wheas those in the control group watched video clips of static pictures showing differnet landscapes. All patients was measured the EMG data in the STS on the affected side and unaffected side. The EMG data were collected from RF and GCM while performing the STS task. The EMG onset time and onset time ratio for the RF and GCM were calculated by dividing the EMG onset time of RF and GCM action on the affected side by these on the unaffected side. Results: Onset time of affected side RF, GCM was significantly faster action observation training group than control group(p<.05). But interventions before and after the symmetry did not show a significant increase. Conclusion: There findings suggest that action observation training has a positive effect on the muscle onset time shortened during STS tasks.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate booklets and video clips to prevent children from picky eating. Methods: Based on a survey conducted on food preferences of preschool children aged 2 to 5 years, 14 kinds of less preferred vegetables were selected. Accordingly, educational videos, activity books, and teaching-learning guides were produced for preschool children using the 'food bridge' theory, and the educational materials were named "Friendly vegetables". Educational materials were distributed to childcare institutions, and their effectiveness was investigated for preschool children who were instructed on these materials once every 30 days from March to November, 2019. The children were examined for changes in their knowledge of names, colors, taste/texture, methods of cultivation, and preferences for vegetables before and after the instructional course. Results: The awareness of vegetables increased significantly in younger children and the picky eating group. When the assessment was carried out in terms of vegetable knowledge, it was observed that the younger the age or the pickier the in eating food, the more effective the education is compared to the counter part. The preference for vegetables also increased after the instruction compared to the pre-instruction period, but significant changes were seen only in the 2~3 year age group for boys and girls. Also, only the picky group of girls showed changes in preference. The children's average interest in the education materials was 3.85 points out of 5 points. Conclusions: Through this study, we have developed educational materials for standalone use in childcare facilities and confirmed that they have a significant effect on improving awareness and preferences related to vegetables. In summary, the younger the age or the pickier the child in eating food, the more effective the education. It is believed that additional education on mealtime guidance is needed which can alter the eating behavior of preschool children and improve their diet. It is proposed to widen the scope of use of the materials by collecting diverse opinions from child care teachers.

  • Recently, the necessity of systems which effectively store and retrieve video data has increased. Conventional video retrieval systems retrieve data using menus or text based keywords. Due to the lack of information, many video clips are simultaneously searched, and the user must have a certain level of knowledge to utilize the system. In this paper, we suggest a natural language based conversational video retrieval system that reflects users' intentions and includes more information than keyword based queries. This system can also retrieve from events or people to their movements. First, an event database is constructed based on meta-data which are generated by domain analysis for collected video in an office environment. Then, a script database is also constructed based on the query pre-processing and analysis. From that, a method to retrieve a video through a matching technique between natural language queries and answers is suggested and validated through performance and process evaluation for 10 users The natural language based retrieval system has shown its better efficiency in performance and user satisfaction than the menu based retrieval system.
