  • A novel concept of transmissibility based on a wavelet transform for structural damage detection is presented in this paper. The main objective of the research was the development of a method for detecting slight damage at the incipient stage. As a vibration-based approach, the concept of transmissibility has attracted considerable interest because of its advantages and effectiveness in damage detection. However, like other vibration-based methods, transmissibility-based approaches suffer from insensitivity to slight local damage because of the regularity of the traditional Fourier transform. Therefore, the powerful signal processing techniques must be found to solve this problem. Wavelet transform that is able to capture subtle information in measured signals has received extensive attention in the field of damage detection in recent decades. In this paper, we first propose a novel transmissibility concept based on the wavelet transform. Outlier analysis was adopted to construct a damage detection algorithm with wavelet-based transmissibility. The feasibility of the proposed method was numerically investigated with a typical six-degrees-of-freedom spring-mass system, and comparative investigations were performed with a conventional transmissibility approach. The results demonstrate that the proposed transmissibility is more sensitive than conventional transmissibility, and the former is a promising tool for structural damage detection at the incipient stage.

  • Perhaps, this is the first attempt which applies the wavelet transform to the fundamental vibration mode for damage detection in a beam. Contrary to most existing detection methods on mode shapes, the present method directly works only with the fundamental mode of a damaged beam: no vibration mode shape of a undamaged beam is necessary. Applying the concept of vanishing moments of wavelet functions, we show that wavelet functions are effective damage detectors. Both numerical and experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the present method.

  • This study proposed the method of the multi-crack detection using the sensitivity coefficient matrix which is calculated from the change of eigenvalues and eigenvectors before and after the crack. Each crack is modeled by a rotational springs. The method is applied to the cantilever beam with miulti-crack. The eigenvalues and eigenvectors are determined for different crack locations and depths. The prediction of multi-crack detection are in good agreement with the results of structural reanalysis.

  • Non-contact detection of internal defects in a rail using ultrasonic waves is discussed in this paper. Cracks in a rail may be a cause of a serious railway accident such as derailment if left undetected. Concurrent rail inspection method based on ultrasonic testing using piezoelectric transducers has several limitations as it should keep physical contact with the rail. This work suggests a non-contact detection of internal defects in a rail using ElectroMagnetic Acoustic Transducers (EMAT) which can produce and measure ultrasonic waves in a rail without any couplant. The EMATs for rail inspection are designed and fabricated and their working performance is verified through a series of experiments on various types of internal defects in test rails. The effect of lift-off between the transducers and the rail on the generated signals is also discussed.

  • The early damage detection of large structures is very important to prevent the disaster due to its global failure. In this paper, a damage detection method of the beam-analogy structure based on the wavelet transformation of mode shape is presented. This can effectively detect the singularity of mode shape caused to the inconsistency of bending moment and shear force at the damaged part using the discrete wavelet and its inverse transforms. To investigate the validity and the applicability of the presented damage detection method, numerical simulation and experiment are carried out for the idealized beam and the real ship structures.

  • The performance of fault diagnostics for a planetary gearbox depends on vibration modulation characteristics, which can vary with manufacturing & assembly tolerance, and load condition. In this paper, a fault diagnostics technique that considers vibration modulation characteristics is proposed for the effective fault detection of planetary gearboxes in wind turbines. For identifying the vibration modulation characteristics in practice, re-sampled vibration signals are processed with narrow band-pass filters. Thereafter, the optimal position of the vibration extraction window is identified for effective detection of faulty signals under the varying vibration modulation characteristics. The proposed diagnostics technique makes it possible to perform robust diagnostics of the planetary gearbox with regard to the changeable vibration modulation effect. For demonstrating the proposed fault diagnostics technique, a 2-kW WT testbed is designed with two DC motors and gearboxes. A faulty gear with partial tooth breakage is machined and assembled into the gearbox.

  • Damage detection methods using vibration modes are investigated on ring structures and. modal behavior of the slightly asymmetric rings is examined. Mode shapes changes, MSER(modal strain energy ratio) and MCR(modal curvature ratio) are applied to identify the locations of faults or damages. Parameters are calculated and compared by finite element analysis on rings with designed local damages. Damages are modeled as reduced stiffness in the analysis. The results show MSER and MCR can be proper factors to detect local damages in ring structures.

  • The roller bearings play an important role not only sustain radial or axial load of system, but carry out a rotatory movement as a various operating conditions. They happen that incipient faults which were caused by excessive load, manufacturing or assembling process's errors and many other reasons are created. The bearing faults make noise and vibration by a continuous collision of rotatory components, which can lower the quality and stability of auto-transmission. Therefore, it is important to detect the early fault as soon as possible. This paper presents a detecting method for the improvement in quality by developing the program which can be used to analyze and predict the vibrational characteristics caused by roller bearing faults. We completed development of the inspection system of vibration by appling the most efficient detecting methods and verified the system's reliability through experiments.

  • Vibration problems are an intrinsic characteristic in a washing machine owing to rotation working mechanism. Therefore, a right comprehension of working principle and the analysis on dynamic behavior of a washing machine is essential to design anti-vibration or vibration reduction. In this paper, we choose two kinds of a washing machine: a suspension type pulsator/drum type washing machine. Each the structure and working principle of a washing machine is discussed briefly and the dynamic behavior of it is investigated, then, the vibration detection problems of transient or excessive vibration is tented in each category. Some vibration experimented results in a washing machine are presented also.
