  • The ventilation theory developed by Luyten, Pedlosky and Stommel (1983) is applied to the East Sea to understand the general circulation pattern of the Intermediate Water, especially the ventilated circulation beneath the Tsushima Warm Current. The original model is slightly modified such that it takes the inflow-outflow of the Tsushima Current into consideration. Results of the model indicate that for sufficiently strong Ekman pumping, the Intermediate Water circulates cyclonically by ventilation. The Intermediate Water subducts beneath the Tsushima Warm Water through the western boundary layer. Off the western boundary layer, it turns northward, outcrops to the north by passing the polar front and continues to flow northward until it finally is absorbed by the northern boundary layer. This result seems to be compatible with some recent observations. Over the ventilated area, the transport of the Tsushima Current is negligible and most transport occurs in the shadow area where the Intermediate layer is motionless indicating that, over the deep motionless layer, the two-layered vertical structure under consideration becomes substantially single-layered.

  • The bicycle is one of the most important eco-friendly transport methods which can mitigate global warming. The portability of a bike on public transportation systems is essential for the wide spread use of bicycles by people in urban environments. In this study, a lightweight urban folding bike was developed with careful consideration of the association with public transport. A folding frame using a moving slide link mechanism made from AL6061 is proposed. Numerical analysis was conducted to evaluate structural safety of the bike in both vertical and pedal loading tests. The proposed urban folding bicycle weights only 10kg and summation of its width, length, and height in the folded configuration is under 158cm.

  • An analytical model for predicting the convection-diffusion of solute dumped in a homogeneous open sea of constant water depth has been developed in a time-integral form. The model incorporates spatially uniform, uni-directional, mean and oscillatory currents for horizontal convection, the settling velocity for the vertical convection, and the anisotropic turbulent diffusion. Two transformations were introduced to reduce the convection-diffusion equation to the Fickian type diffusion equation, and then the Galerkin method was then applied via the expansion of eigenfunctions over the water column derived from the Sturm-Liouville problem. A series of calculations has been performed to demonstrate the applicability of the model.

  • In this paper, a novel drowsiness detection algorithm using eye-blink pattern is proposed. The proposed drowsiness detection model using finite automata makes it easy to detect eye-blink, drowsiness and sleep by checking the number of input symbols standing for closed eye state only. Also it increases the accuracy by taking vertical projection histogram after locating the eye region using the feature of horizontal projection histogram, and minimizes the external effects such as eyebrows or black-framed glasses. Experimental results in eye-blinks detection using the JZU eye-blink database show that our approach achieves more than 93% precision and high performance.

  • An experimental study is carried out to study two-phase vertically upward hydraulic transport of solid particles by water in a vertical and inclined (0${\sim}$60 degree) concentric annulus with rotation of the inner cylinder. Rheology of particulate suspensions in shear-thinning fluids is of importance in many applications such as particle removal from surfaces, transport of proppants in fractured reservoir and cleaning of drilling holes, and so on. Annular fluid velocities varied from 0.2 m/s to 1.5 m/s for the actual drilling operational condition. Macroscopic behavior of solid particles, averaged flow rate, and particle rising velocity are observed. Main parameters considered in this study were radius ratio, inner-pipe rotary speed, fluid flow regime, and particle injection rate. For both water and CMC solutions, the higher the concentration of the solid particles is, the larger the pressure gradients become

  • It is known that the main source of the area image sticking is the ion charge adsorption on the alignment layer. We found out that the adsorption of the ion charge of the liquid crystal in the cell was physisorption, which takes place between all molecules on any surface providing the adsorption force is small.

  • This paper proposes an intelligent PID/Fuzzy control system for two humanoid robots to transport objects stably. When a robot transports an object while walking, a whole body system of a robot may not be stable due to vibration or external factors from a different departure speed error and a body movement of walking robots. Therefore, it is necessary to measure the horizontal and vertical locations and speeds of object, then calibrate the difference of departure speed between robots with PID/Fuzzy control. The results of simulation with two robots indicated that a proposed controller makes robots to transport an object stably.

  • To analyze the saline intrusion in the place, such as an estuary, the three-dimensional numerical model is developed. In this study, the advection terms of the governing equations are discretized by upwind scheme. By using an explicit scheme for the longitudinal direction and an implicit scheme for the vertical direction, the numerical model is free from the restriction of temporal step size caused by a relatively small grid ratio. The equation of state is used to consider the density, and the scalar transport equation for salinity is employed the third order TVD to scheme to prevent unphysical oscillation near discontinuity. In order to verify saline intrusion, the numerical model is conducted to compare the previous model in the lock exchange. The present model generally show a good agreement with the previous one.

  • In this paper we examine the mass transport within the boundary layer near the sea bottom. The fluid domain is seperated into inner and outer region of boundary layers. In outer region, the wave field is assumed to be inviscid and irrotational. When the incident waves enter the arrays of circular cylinders, the scattering of water waves by an array of N bottom mounted vertical circular cylinders is solved using the method proposed by Linton & Evans under the potential theory. In inner region, the Navier-Stokes equation must be satisfied with boundary conditions at the boundary later and bottom is to be represented by the sum of the Eulerian mean drift and the Stokes' drift.

  • This paper has dealt with the characteristics of mass and heat transfer of vertical flat plate with free convection. The theory of similarity transformations applied to the momentum and energy equations for free convection. To derive the similarity equation of mass transfer. the equation for conservation of species was added to the continuity. momentum and energy equations. The momentum, energy and species equations set numerically to obtain the velocity, temperature and mass fraction of species as dimensionless. For cases where momentum transport dominates, the thermal boundary layers are shorter than the momentum boundary layer. The relationships between momentum, energy and species were clarified from this study.
