The Ropeless Elevator: New Transportation System for High-rise Buildings (and Beyond)

  • The paper reports the result of a 2-year long research conducted by CTBUH on the design possibilities enabled by the Ropeless and Multidirectional elevator systems, investigating how such a significant innovation (or better to say revolution) in the vertical transportation could affect tall buildings first and cities then. The purpose of the study is to prefigure the adoption of ropeless and multidirectional cabins for tall buildings mobility, with the aim to overcome the evolutionary bottleneck of the high-rise building type due to the exclusively vertical direction of transport, which limited, over the years, the design possibilities in terms of height, shape and relations with the surrounding environment. CTBUH research team, together with professionals in the field and supporting academic advisors, developed a series of design considerations on plan organizations, dispatching alternatives and on the integration of horizontal direction in the circulation, with the aim of anticipating potential and criticality arising from the application of ropeless and multidirectional systems.

Maxwell nanofluid flow through a heated vertical channel with peristalsis and magnetic field

  • This paper studied the peristaltic transport of upper convected Maxwell nanofluid through a porous medium in a heated (isothermal) symmetric vertical channel. The nanofluid is assumed to be electrically conducting in the presence of a uniform magnetic field. These phenomena are modeled mathematically by a differential equations system by taking low Reynolds number and long-wavelength approximation, the yield differential equations have solved analytically. A suggested new technique to display and discuss the trapping phenomenon is presented. We discussed and analyzed the pumping characteristics, heat function, flow velocity and trapping phenomena which were illustrated graphically through a set of figures for various values of parameters of the problem. The numerical results show that, there are remarkable effects on the vertical velocity, pressure gradient and trapping phenomena with the thermal change of the walls.

난류 모수화 방법에 따른 대기경계층 수치모의 특성에 관한 연구 (Numerical Study on Characteristics of Turbulence Scheme in Planetary Boundary Layer)

  • This paper investigates the characteristics of turbulence schemes. Turbulence closures are fundamental for modeling the atmospheric diffusion, transport and dispersion in the boundary layer. In particular, in non-homogeneous conditions, a proper description of turbulent transport in planetary boundary layer is fundamental aspect. This study is based on the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS) and combines four different turbulence schemes to assess if the different schemes have a impact on simulation results of vertical profiles. Two of these schemes are Isotropc Deformation scheme (I.Def) and Anisotropic deformation scheme (A.Def) that are simple local scheme based on Smagorinsky scheme. The other two are Mellor-Yamada scheme (MY2.5) and Deardorff TKE scheme (D.TKE) that are more complex non-local schemes that include a prognostic equation for turbulence kinetic energy. The simulated potential temperature, wind speed and mixing ratio are compared against radiosonde observations from the study region. MY2.5 shows consistently reasonable vertical profile and closet to observation. D.TKE shows good results under relatively strong synoptic condition especially, mixing ratio simulation. Validation results show that all schemes consistently underestimated wind speed and mixing ratio but, potential temperature was somewhat overestimated.

조석(潮汐)의 영향을 받는 수역(水域)에서 연직상향부력(鉛直上向浮力)? -정지수역(靜止水域)- (Vertical Buoyant Jet in Tidal Water-Stagnant Environment)

  • 정지수역(靜止水域)에서 연직상향(鉛直上向)으로 방류(放流)되는 평면부력(平面浮力)?의 거동을 연속방정식(連續方程式), 운동량수송식(運動量輸送式) 및 추적물(追跡物) 수송식(輸送式)에 의하여 수치적(數値的)으로 해석한다. 이 해석은 유함수(流凾數)와 과수송식(過輸送式)을 도입하고 Prandtl 난류모형(亂流模型)을 이용하였다. 방류밀도(放流密度) Froude 수(數)가 4~32인인 부력(浮力)?의 발달된 흐름영역(領域)에서 구한 ?중심선의 속도(速度)와 온도변화(溫度變化), ?주변수역(周邊水域)의 온도분포(溫度分布)와 흐름양상은 기존자료와 잘 맞음을 확인할 수 있다. 적분형해석(積分型解析)에 필요한 퍼짐율과 확산비(擴散比)가 방류밀도(放流密度) Froude 수(數)와 방류구(放流口)로부터의 거리의 함수로 유도된다.

수직이송 서비스가 가능한 한국형 PRT 운행제어시스템 개발 (Development of an Operation Control System of the Vertical Transferable Korean Personal Rapid Transit)

  • PRT(Personal Rapid Transit)는 유형 또는 무형의 전용궤도에서 자동으로 승객의 요구에 따라 출발지에서 목적지까지 최적의 경로로 논스톱 운행하며, 높은 접근성과 프라이버시 보장 등 자가용 수준의 서비스 제공이 가능한 대중교통수단으로서, 최근 새로운 미래교통시스템으로 재조명받고 있다. 본 논문에서는 PRT 시스템의 연계 운행 효율성 극대화를 목표로 수직이송장치를 연동제어하는 PRT 운행제어시스템의 제어모듈 및 시뮬레이터의 설계 및 시험결과를 제시하였다. 수직이송장치부의 PLC는 운영제어센터 또는 역제어시스템과의 인터페이스를 위해 Modbus 프로토콜을 적용하여 설계되었으며, 원격제어시스템으로부터 명령을 전달받아 동작하는 자동모드와 수직이송장치에 설치된 센서검지 상태에 따라 독립적으로 동작하는 수동모드로 구성하였다. 또한, 실제 차량이 운행하는 환경에서 가상의 차량운행 시나리오를 적용하여 실제 차량과 가상 차량을 혼합하여 운행할 수 있는 3D 그래픽 기반 PRT 운영제어 시뮬레이터를 구현하였다.

계면면적 수송방정식을 적용한 이상유동 해석코드 개발 (CFD Code Development for a Two-phase Flow with an Interfacial Area Transport Equation)

  • For the analysis of a two-phase flow, the interaction between two phases such as the interfacial momentum or heat transfer is proportional to the interfacial area. So the interfacial area concentration (IAC) is one of the most important parameters governing the behavior of each phase. This study focuses on the development of a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code for investigating a boiling flow with a one-group IAC transport equation. It was based on the two-fluid model and governing equations were calculated by SMAC algorithm. For checking the robustness of the developed code, the experiment of a subcooled boiling in a vertical annulus channel was analyzed to validate the capability of the IAC transport equation. As the results, the developed code was confirmed to have the capability in predicting multi-dimensional phenomena of vapor generation and propagation in a subcooled boiling.

수정 모래판 모형을 이용한 지표수분 함량과 비사이동의 되먹임 구조 탐색 (Exploration of Feedback Structures Between Surface Moisture and Aeolian Processes with a Modified Sand Slab Model)

  • Traditional approaches to surface moisture problems in the context of aeolian research have focused on the initiation of sand movement, developing various models for predicting threshold velocity on a wet surface. They have been unsatisfactory, however, in explaining field observations because they have not incorporated spatiotemporal variability of surface moisture, the interactions between transported sand grains and surface, and the role of aeolian transport in controlling surface moisture. As Nield (2011) showed, a simplified numerical model can be used to investigate this issue. This research aims to explore the feedback structures between aeolian transport and surface moisture using a modified sand slab model. Key modifications are the introduction of simultaneous updating scheme for all the slabs and moisture-assigning procedures with and without aeolian transport. The major findings are as follows. Moist surface conditions suppress sand slab movement, leading to the development of smaller-scale topography. Available sands for aeolian transport are determined by the vertical patterns of moisture content with its variations from groundwater to the surface. Sand patches on a wet surface act as a localized source area. Sand movement drives immediate changes in surface moisture rather than time-lag reponses, mostly when moist conditions are dominant.

치조골신장 부위에 식립된 임프란트 주위의 골형성에 관한 연구 (A HISTOMORPHOMETRIC STUDY OF BONE FORMATION AROUND IMPLANTS PLACED AFTER VERTICAL ALVEOLAR DISTRACTION IN THE DOG MEDEL)

  • Purpose: Distraction osteogenesis has been applied to the maxillofacial implantology and good experimental and clinical results have been reported. However, histologic studies of implants placement on distraction osteogenesis of atrophic alveolar ridges are scarce. In this study, we compare the bone formation between in the transport part and in the distraction part by histomorphometric analysis. Materials & methods: Three adult beagle dogs were served as experimental subjects. The 2 premolars and 1st molar were extracted on the Lt. side of mandible in each beagle dog. After one month later, osteotomy was performed and distraction device was adapted. Distraction was performed with gradual incremental separation of two bone pieces at a rate of 1.0mm per day for 5 days. During consolidation phase, new bone was formed in the distraction zone between the separated bone pieces. 5 weeks after distraction phase, 3 implants were placed in each beagle dog. The implants were inserted through transport part and distraction part and inferior basal bone. The animals were sacrificed at 2 weeks, 4 weeks, and 12 weeks after implant placement. BIC and BA of implants on distraction part and transport part were measured histomorphometrically. Results: BIC, BA increased after implant placement as time goes by passes and new bone formation was slightly higher in transport part than in distraction part at 2 weeks, 4 weeks after implant placement. At 12 weeks after implant placement, BIC, BA of were 74%, 61% in transport part and 77%, 59% in distraction part, therefore there were no difference in BIC and BA between transport part and distraction part at 12 weeks after implant placement.

Use of Ergonomic Measures Related to Musculoskeletal Complaints among Construction Workers: A 2-year Follow-up Study

  • Background: The physical work demands of construction work can be reduced using ergonomic measures. The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of ergonomic measures related to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among construction workers. Methods: A questionnaire was sent at baseline and 2 years later to 1,130 construction workers. We established (1) the proportion of workers reporting an increase in their use of ergonomic measures, (2) the proportion of workers reporting a decrease in MSDs, (3) the relative risk for an increase in the use of ergonomic measures and a decrease in MSDs, and (4) workers' knowledge and opinions about the use of ergonomic measures. Results: At follow-up, response rate was 63% (713/1,130). The proportion of workers using ergonomic measures for vertical transport increased (34%, 144/419, p < 0.01); for measures regarding horizontal transport and the positioning of materials, no change was reported. The proportion of workers reporting shoulder complaints decreased (28%, 176/638, p = 0.02). A relationship between the use of ergonomic measures and MSDs was not found; 83% (581/704) of the workers indicated having sufficient knowledge about ergonomic measures. Lightening the physical load was reported to be the main reason for using them. Conclusion: Only the use of ergonomic measures for vertical transport increased over a 2-year period. No relationship between the use of ergonomic measures and MSDs was found. Strategies aimed at improving the availability of ergonomic equipment complemented with individualized advice and training in using them might be the required next steps to increase the use of ergonomic measures.

Settling Column의 입자분포 측정치를 이용한 연안 퇴적물 입자의 연직이동 모델 연구 (A Study on a Vertical Transport Model of Coastal Sediments Using Particle Size Distribution Data from a Settling Column)

  • 오염된 지역의 연안 퇴적물은 PCB 등 소수성 오염 물질을 흡착하고 있으며, 준설과 같은 환경 정화사업을 할 때, 재부유되어 오염되지 않은 인근 수역으로 이동될 수 있다. 이러한 환경 영향의 평가를 위해 저자는 앞서 침강, 연직확산, 응집에 의해 입자크기 분포가 변화하는 것을 모사할 수 있는 수학적 모델을 개발 제시한 바 있다. 본 연구에서는 이 모델을 이용하여, 연안환경을 실험적으로 재현한 높이 2 m의 settling column으로부터 측정된 입자크기분포 자료를 이용하여 시뮬레이션하며 분석한 결과를 제시하였다. 분석결과, 모델은 퇴적물 입자가 column 내에서 연직이동을 하며 입자 분포가 시간적으로 또 수심별로 변화하는 것을 상당히 잘 예측하는 것으로 나타났으며 재부유된 퇴적물 입자는 연직이동과 함께 응집이 되고 있는 것으로 분석되었다. 따라서 본 연구는 크기가 다양한 오염된 퇴적물이 응집에 의해 입자크기분포가 변화하며 연직 이동되는 매우 복잡한 현상에 대해 유효하게 컴퓨터 모사할 수 있음을 보였다.
