  • Ti:LiNbO$_3$ optical waveguides have been fabricated by Ti-diffusion in wet oxygen atmosphere. The fabrication conditions of furnace temperature, diffusion time and bubbler temperature were 105$0^{\circ}C$, 8 hours and 9$0^{\circ}C$, respectively and Ti thickness was varied from 700$\AA$ to 1500$\AA$. In this paper, the nearfield patterns, mode sizes (hirizontal/vertical) and insertion loss of waveguides were discussed at wavelength 1550 nm ad function of Ti thickness. With the planar waveguide, the effective index change and diffusion depth were calculated at 632.8nm using the prism coupling method. From these results, the best Ti thickness in our conditions seems like to by 1200$\AA$~1300$\AA$.

  • The effectiveness of various electrode configurations in horizontal mappings and 1-D inversions of vertical sounding data for delineating 2-D structures was studied. Apparent resistivity values of three point, dipole-dipole, Wenner, and Schlumberger mappings were simulated for such structures as vertical dyke, tabular prism, buried vertical fault, ramp and complex structure by finite difference method (FDM) and they were compared with each other. Also 2-D cross sections for three structures obtained by interpolation of 1-D inverted sounding data in terms of three layers were compared for Schlumberger and Wenner arrays. On these cross sections, horizontal and vertical resistivity interfaces of the 2-D structures are revealed relatively clearly. Apparent resistivity curves of Schlumberger mapping show vertical resistivity discontinuities very well. On the whole, Schlumberger array is superior to the other arrays in electric sounding as well as mapping. This study clearly indicates that interpretations of 2-D structures based on 1-D inversion are possible.

  • The Earth's surface deforms vertically in response to a variety of sources relating to lithospheric and sub-lithospheric processes, and distinguishing the continental mechanisms for vertical motions of the lithosphere remains a fundamental challenge in geosciences. A key prerequisite to the challenge is documentation of the temporal and spatial pattern of vertical motions in different tectonic settings. This study is aimed at elucidating the geodynamic factors that can contribute to vertical motions of the Earth's surface in intraplate continental settings including the Neogene uplift in the Korean peninsula based on numerous recent achievements in relevant fields. Ultimately, deciphering the interplay between the Earth's surface and the Earth's interior processes leads us to the notion of "the importance of geomorphic landscape" as a prism to view the dynamics of the Earth's inside.

  • Track geometry changes by traffic loads. The bigger the changes are, the worse the riding comfort and running stability of train. This is so-called track irregularity and is the most important quality parameters of ballasted track. To objectively assess track irregularity, track geometry should be able to be measured. Practically, railway companies use moving chord method, which determine versine values via a chord. The versine is the vertical distance to curve measured in the middle of the chord. This type of method measures only versine of track irregularity curve by transfer function from the characteristics of measuring device. In this report, review the characteristics of two types of measuring tools by comparing the measurements. The one is GRP-1000 system, optical surveying system with Total station and lazar prism trolley. This calculates track geometry by surveying absolute coordinates of two points each on both rail heads. The other is EM-120, measures versine with 10m of symmetrical chord length.

  • An integrated light guide plate (LGP) was designed for liquid crystal displays (LCD) without using prism and diffuser sheets. The integrated LGP is textured with micro-patterns on both the top and bottom surfaces. The textures effectively substitute for a single prism-sheet and a diffuser sheet in LCD displays without decreasing the brightness and uniformity. A LCD display with our integrated light guide is simulated to give average luminance of 4560 cd/$m^2$, luminance uniformity of 83% horizontal viewing angle $60^{\circ}$ and vertical viewing angle $56^{\circ}$. Therefore an ultra thin (slim) back light unit can be constructed with fewer optical sheets, which reduces the manufacturing cost and so improves price competitiveness.

  • Purpose: To report a case of trochlear nerve palsy caused by quadrigeminal cistern lipoma located in the dorsal midbrain. Case summary: A 65-year-old male visited our clinic for intermittent vertical diplopia over 2-year period. Symptoms of diplopia had worsened over the past two weeks. He had no previous medical history except having had diabetes for 1 month. The best-corrected visual acuity was 20/25 in the right eye and 20/20 in the left eye. Pupillary examination was not remarkable. Extraocular examination showed 4 prism diopters (PD) left hypertropia at distant gaze and 4 PD exotropia at near gaze, with adduction elevation of the left eye. The Bielschowsky head tilt test revealed 6 PD left hypertropia on the left gaze and orthotropia on the right tilt. Fundus examination showed excyclotorsion of the right eye and incyclotorsion of the left eye. Brain magnetic resonance imaging revealed quadrigeminal cistern lipoma. Prism glasses were prescribed to alleviate diplopia, and we followed up the lesions without further treatment. Conclusions: Trochlear nerve palsy can be caused by quadrigeminal cistern lipoma; however, it is uncommon for this condition to be caused by a compressive lesion. Prompt neuroimaging can be helpful to rule out the causes of this condition in patients with atypical symptoms.

  • Purpose: To investigate a correlation between vertical fixation disparity and stereopsis by analyzing distribution of types of vertical fixation disparity. Methods: In this study, RANDOT(R) stereotest partly using random dot was used in stereopsis tests. The vertical fixation disparity in close proximity categorized fixation disparity slope into six types on the basis of the result of measurement in when two thin lines, one for one eye looks, become overlapped as a line by adding into prism with Wesson fixation disparity card while maintaining a distance of 25 cm from patients. Results: In the types of near vertical fixation disparity curve, targeting 43 people, the first type 55.82% was the most distributed, the second type is the least 23.25%, the third type of 4.65%, the fourth type of 4.65%, the fifth type of 6.98%, the sixths types of 4.65% were distributed. The result of a correlation analysis, which shows the degree of linear correlation between two variables, represented that stereopsis is not correlated with Y-intercept (r = -0.07) which show vertical fixation disparity, associated phoria (r = -0.03) and dissociated phoria (r = -0.00), but it was not statistically significant (p>0.05). Fixation disparity slope of vertical fixation disparity (r = 0.36) was shown to have a positive correlation with stereopsis. It has a low positive correlation and a meaningful statistics (p<0.05). The Y-intercept which indicates vertical fixation disparity was also not associated with stereopsis (r = -0.07) and dissociated phoria (r = -0.03), and this was not statistically significant (p>0.05), while it had a high correlation as well as a statistically significant with associated phoria (r = 0.89). There was a negative correlation between Y-intercept and fixation disparity slope of vertical fixation disparity (r = -0.33). It showed a low relationship but statistically valuable (p>0.05). As a result of regression analysis, the stereopsis was changed as 7.631" if vertical fixation disparity changes 1' and the vertical fixation disparity changed as 0.017' if stereopsis changes 1', and the change was statistically significant (p<0.05). Conclusions: The study shows that there is a low correlation between stereopsis and vertical fixation disparity, and it is difficult to determine stereopsis only using vertical fixation disparity. Therefore, it suggests other factors above vertical fixation disparity have greater influence on stereopsis.

  • In a head-mounted display (HMD) for virtual-reality applications, a narrow viewing angle is preferred to the usual, wide viewing angle because the HMD is positioned close in front of the user's eyes, and the display position is fixed. In this paper, we propose a new back-light unit (BLU) for implementing a narrow viewing angle, which is suitable for a HMD. By optimizing the scattering patterns in the light-guide-plate and inverse-prism structures, the viewing angle and correlations between structural parameters in the BLU components are analyzed with ray-tracing simulations. As a result, a double-angle inverse-prism structure incorporating the scattering patterns of a light-guide plate is chosen, which results in a 14% increase in center luminance, a 16% decrease in the vertical viewing angle, and a light efficiency of up to 70%, compared to a conventional BLU. Thus, the new BLU system is expected to be applied in a high-efficiency liquid crystal display.
