Seismic performance of a resilient low-damage base isolation system under combined vertical and horizontal excitations

  • Traditional base isolation systems focus on isolating the seismic response of a structure in the horizontal direction. However, in regions where the vertical earthquake excitation is significant (such as near-fault region), a traditional base-isolated building exhibits a significant vertical vibration. To eliminate this shortcoming, a rocking-isolated system named Telescopic Column (TC) is proposed in this paper. Detailed rocking and isolation mechanism of the TC system is presented. The seismic performance of the TC is compared with the traditional elastomeric bearing (EB) and friction pendulum (FP) base-isolated systems. A 4-storey reinforced concrete moment-resisting frame (RC-MRF) is selected as the reference superstructure. The seismic response of the reference superstructure in terms of column axial forces, base shears, floor accelerations, inter-storey drift ratios (IDR) and collapse margin ratios (CMRs) are evaluated using OpenSees. The results of the nonlinear dynamic analysis subjected to multi-directional earthquake excitations show that the superstructure equipped with the newly proposed TC is more resilient and exhibits a superior response with higher margin of safety against collapse when compared with the same superstructure with the traditional base-isolation (BI) system.

Effects of High Damping Rubber Bearing on Horizontal and Vertical Seismic Responses of a Pressurized Water Reactor

  • The seismic responses of a base isolated Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) are investigated using a mathematical model which expresses the superstructure as lumped mass-spring model and the seismic isolator as an equivalent spring-damper. Time history analyses are performed for the 1940 E1 Centre earthquakes in both horizontal and vertical directions. In the analysis, structural damping of 5% is used for the superstructure. The isolator damping ratios of 12% for horizontal and 5% for vertical directions are used. The acceleration responses in base isolated PWR superstructure with high damping rubber bearings are much smaller than those in fixed base structure in horizontal direction. However, the vertical acceleration responses at the superstructure in the base isolation system are amplified to some extent. It is suggested that the vertical seismic responses at the superstructure should be reduced by introducing a soft vertical isolation device.

Comparison of Seismic Retrofit Efficiencies of Base Isolation Systems for Existing Bridges

  • In recent modern protective systems have been introduced to reduce the vulnerability of bridges to seismic events. These protective systems include base isolation devices of different types, damping devices and active control devices. The objective of this study is to analytically evaluate the efficiency of a seismic retrofit scheme using base isolation systems, such as lead rubber bearings and sliding isolators. In this study, a triaxial model was used, which is capable of accurately developing the behavior of sliding isolators including the influence of the changing vertical force and velocity on the friction coefficients. Seismic response analyses of the bridge before and after retrofit were carried out by using a three-dimensional nonlinear seismic analysis program, IDARC-BRIDGE. To evaluate the efficiency of a retrofit scheme using triaxial isolators, a comparative study of performances of above two base isolation systems was conducted, and the numerical results show that the triaxial isolation solution can effectively reduce the sheat forces at the piers for the vertical ground motion.

Investigations on a vertical isolation system with quasi-zero stiffness property

  • This paper presents a series of experimental and numerical investigations on a vertical isolation system with quasi-zero stiffness (QZS) property. The isolation system comprises a linear helical spring and disk spring. The disk spring is designed to provide variable stiffness to the system. Orthogonal static tests with different design parameters are conducted to verify the mathematical and mechanical models of the isolation system. The deviations between theoretical and test results influenced by the design parameters are summarized. Then, the dynamic tests for the systems with different under-load degrees are performed, including the fast sweeping tests, harmonic excitation tests, and half-sine impact tests. The displacement transmissibility, vibration reduction rate, and free vibration response are calculated. Based on the test results, the variation of the transmission rule is evaluated and the damping magnitudes and types are identified. In addition, the relevant numerical time history responses are calculated considering the nonlinear behavior of the system. The results indicate that the QZS isolation system has a satisfactory isolation effect, while a higher damping level can potentially promote the isolation performance in the low-frequency range. It is also proved that the numerical calculation method accurately predicts the transmission character of the isolation system.

  • The purpose of seismic isolation system among them is to lengthen the period of structure and make its period shift from the dominant period of earthquake. In this study, the seismic behavior of arch structure with lead rubber bearing(LRB) and friction pendulum system(FPS) is analyzed. The arch structure is the simplest structure and has the basic dynamic characteristics among large spatial structures. Also, Large spatial structures have large vertical response by horizontal seismic vibration, unlike seismic behavior of normal rahmen structures. When horizontal seismic load is applied to the large spatial structure with isolation systems, the horizontal acceleration response of the large spatial structure is reduced and the vertical seismic response is remarkably reduced.

수직 온도구배를 갖는 공기 흡입 덕트의 기계적 격리기법 (Mechanical Isolation Method for an Air Intake Duct with Vertical Temperature Gradient)

  • 직접 연결식(DC) 고도모의 엔진시험 수행 시, 공기 흡입 덕트와 항공용 엔진 사이에 래버린스 씰이 설치된다. 래버린스 씰은 이 둘을 기계적으로 격리시킴으로써 주추력 및 측추력을 보다 정확하게 측정할 수 있도록 돕는다. 하지만 덕트 내부 공급공기에 높은 수직 온도구배가 발생할 경우, 래버린스 씰의 격리가 파괴되어버린다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 접촉 문제를 해결하기 위한 노력의 일환으로 래버린스 씰 온도 제어장치를 제작/설치하였다. 본 장치를 실제 항공용 엔진시험에 적용한 결과, 높은 수직 온도구배가 생성되어도 래버린스 씰의 격리가 잘 유지되는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.

  • All types of dynamic excitation, periodical, pulse or transient in vertical, horizontal or all three directions can be effectively reduced by vibration isolation systems. Typical elements for vibration isolation control are spring units consisting of a group of helical compression springs. In all cases of shock, transient or random excitation energy absorbing dampers have to be added to the spring units in order to reduce system response in the frequency range near the natural frequency of the isolation system. The same isolation system of spring units and viscos-dampers has been used since 1979 for passive protection of buildings and structures has been proved to by very advantageous for vibration and structure borne noise control. Not only because of high vertical flexibility of the spring units, compared for example with typical rubber or neoprene mounts out also because of the horizontal of flexibility, which can be adapted by modifying the spring dimensions to nearly every requirement. It is just normal to use the same basic elements for passive isolation as for active isolation.

교통하중에 대한 3차원 하이브리드 면진시스템의 수직 진동성능 평가 (Evaluation of Vertical Vibration Performance of Tridimensional Hybrid Isolation System for Traffic Loads)

  • 본 연구에서는 진동원으로서 교통하중(고속열차)에 대해 수직 방진기능과 수평 면진기능을 조합한 3차원 하이브리드 면진시스템(Tridimensional Hybrid Isolation System, THIS)을 제안하였고, 고속열차 진동에 대한 THIS의 수직 진동 사용성 개선 효과를 해석적으로 평가하였다. 해석을 위하여 실제 16층의 공동주택을 상용구조해석프로그램의 고유치해석과 침실 바닥판에 대한 펄스 응답 분석을 통해 주요 진동모드를 식별하였고, 이 주요 진동 모드를 가지고 바닥판의 수평과 수직, 회전 자유도를 가지는 16개 층의 골조 모델을 제작하였다. 해석방법은 실제 고속철도가 통행할 때 철로와 인접한 구조물에서 계측한 가속도를 진동원으로 적용하고 THIS의 강성과 감쇠비를 변수로 상태-공간방정식을 이용하여 동적해석을 수행하였다. 그 결과, 기존 구조물의 수직 고유주기 대비 THIS의 수직 주기가 커질수록 층별 바닥판 응답이 저감되기 시작하는 임계 주기비가 다르고, 주기가 5배 이상(0.006 이하의 강성비)일 때 모든 바닥판의 가속도 수준이 비면진 대비 약 70% 이하로 감소하였다. 또한, THIS의 감쇠비에 대한 응답 제어에 미치는 영향이 매우 적은 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로 THIS에 대한 수직 진동 사용성 개선 효과를 확인하기 위하여 비면진 구조물과 0.006의 강성비와 0.03의 감쇠비를 가지는 THIS가 적용된 구조물에 대하여 1층과 16층 바닥판 가속도를 AIJ, SCI, AISC 진동 사용성 기준에 따라 평가하였고, 기존에 주거지 사용성 기준을 만족하지 못한 데 반해, THIS 적용 후 주거지 사용성 기준을 모두 만족하는 것을 확인하였다.

완전공핍 광 싸이리스터에서 입출력의 높은 아이솔레이션을 위한 수직 입사형 구조에 관한 연구 (Depleted Optical Thyristor using Vertical-Injection Structure for High Isolation Between Input and Output)

  • This study shows the lasing characteristics of InGaAs/InGaAsP multiple-quantum-well waveguide-type depleted optical thyristor (DOT) using the vertical window. The measured switching voltage and current are 3.36 V and 10 ㎂, respectively. The lasing threshold current is 131 mA at 25 ℃. The output peak wavelength is 1570 nm at a bias current of 1.22 Ith and there is not input signal anymore in the output port. The vertical injection depleted optical thyristor - laser diode (VIDOT-LD) using the vertical-injection structure shows very good isolation between input and output signal.

2 차원 Si 종형 Hall 소자의 자기감도 개선 (Magnetic Sensitivity Improvement of 2-Dimensional Silicon Vertical Hall Device)

  • The 2-dimensional silicon vertical Hall devices, which are sensitive to X,Y components of the magnetic field parallel to the surface of the chip, are fabricated using a modified bipolar process. It consists of the thin p-layer at Si-$SiO_2$ interface and n-epi layer to improve the sensitivity and influence of interface effect. Experimental samples are a sensor type K with and type J without $p^+$ isolation dam adjacent to the center current electrode. The results for both type show a more high sensitivity than the former's 2-dimensional vertical Hall devices and a good linearity. The measured non-linearity is about 0.8%. The sensitivity of type J and type K are about 66 V/AT and 200 V/AT, respectively. This sensor's behavior can be explained by the similar J-FET model.
