  • In order to do morally right behavior that we cognitively know, prosocial moral motivation is necessary. Previous studies revealed emotion is important for prosocial moral motivation. This was supported by cognitive neuroscience studies using functional magnetic resonance imaging(fMRI) in which the activity of ventral striatum(VS) was observed when people made moral decision. VS was originally known as the core area of reward process but recently VS was found to respond also to social reward and even feeling of prosocial emotion itself. However it is not clear why VS was activated when people experience prosocial moral sentiments. The aims of this review article were to find situations in which people are prosocially and morally motivated and to understand more about the role of emotion as a moral motivator by examining evidence regarding the neural network, including VS, of prosocial moral motivation and moral decision-making.

  • The structure ki mutant chorion is described by the ultrastructural level with the scanning electron microscope. The micropyle on the anterior, posterior, leteral and dorsal side region surface patterns do not so much differ from ki mutant and normal strains. The surface structure of ventral side of ki mutant, which is the presumptive embryonic region in oocytes, were netted part corresponding to the boundary of follicle cells that is similar to lateral side structure of egg-shell. The eggshell thickness of ventral side on the ki mutant is mostly thicker. However, the structure of transverse section of normal and ki mutant egg-shell are composed of the outer, middle and inner layers. The ki not effects the formation of the lamellar layer in the egg-shell. It is observed that the characteristic structure in ki mutant egg chorion may be attributed to a areal specificity of epithelium in ventral side of egg-shell formation, and it affects the process of the accumulation of secreted chorionic material and the egg-shell architecture.

  • The scuttle fly is a fly species in the Phoridae family. Scuttle fly which moves abruptly after standing for a while and stop suddenly to rush off again. These characteristic behaviors of the scuttle fly seem to be related to muscular and nervous system or neurotransmitters. Thus, we focused at the neurotransmitter, corazonin (Crz) that is known to be related to resistance to stress and investigated the developmental process of the neurons in the scuttle fly. In a previous studies, we found that there are three groups of corazoninergic neurons in the larval CNS of the scuttle. Larva has 3 pairs of Crz neurons at the dorsolateral area of the brain, 1 pair at the dorsomedial brain and 8 pairs at the ventral nerve cord. In this studies, among these neurons, 1 pair of dorsomedial brain and 8 pairs of ventral nerve cord disappear in early pupal stage after metamorphosis. Only the 3 pairs of dorsolateral brain persist expression of Crz gene through all the period of pupa stage. This group of neurons converge gradually to frontal center of the brain and situated at the medial region. These pairs of corazoninergic neurons keep their number and location in adult stage. In the future, we expect further studies on the histological characteristics of corazonin-expressing cells and the expression of corazonin gene.

  • A 5-year-old Chihuahua dog was evaluated for a tetraparesis. The dog was presented with a non-ambulatory tetraparesis and neck pain. Radiography demonstrated an atlantoaxial (AA) subluxation and increased distance between the dorsal arch of the C1 and the dorsal spinous process of the C2. The AA joint was fixed with ventral transarticular fixation using two screws under fluoroscopic guidance. Neck brace was applied during 3 weeks post-operation. After 4 weeks, the dog was fully ambulatory with improved neurological function. Postoperative radiographs confirmed reduction of the luxation and no migration of screws. The dog showed complete resolution of clinical signs without signs of recurrence till 4 months after operation. Proper angulations of screws provided under fluoroscopic guidance, enabled adequate stabilization of the AA joints using ventral transarticular screw fixation which improved neurologic outcome of the patient.

  • The differentiation of nail matrix and fine structure of matrix cells were studied with light and electron microscope using specimens from nails of thumb finger in Korean fetuses 14 to 24 weeks old. Fetal nail matrix consisted of two horizontal layers, thicker ventral and thinner dorsal matrices, originating from invagination of epidermis in proximal nail field. Matrix being generally thicker in its distal region than the apex became gradually thickened with increase of the fetal age. Each matrix consisted of single layer of basal cells and multiple layers of squamous cells which are arranged close to and parallel to the central axis of the nail mairix. The process of keratinization of fetal nail matrix was noted to be occured concurrently in the ventral and dorsal matrices along the central axis of matrix toward distal and dorsal direction. Squamous cells became matured with accumulation of tonofilaments, increase of keratohyalin granules, discharge of membrane coating granules, and narrowing of intercellular spaces, thickening of plasma membrane and finally being transformed into horny cells of nail plate. Horny cells of nail plate filled with fibrous elements in the electron dense amorphous substance. These findings of keratinization process of fetal nail matrix appeared to be similar to those of keratinization in epidermis and inner root sheath of the hair. In the nail matrix, however, corresponding region to the keratogenous zone of growing hair follicle was not observed. Vacuolated squamous cells of nail matrix seen on light microscopy was considered to be artefactual product, but squamous cells with condensed small nuclei rarely found adjacent nail plate was considered to be one of the squamous cells with unknown function. Proximal end of nail plate was observed on dorsal surface of nail field distal to the proximal nail fold at 14 and 16 weeks old human embryos. Proximal prolongation of the proximal end of nail plate was occured with advancing fetal age and afterward 21 weeks nail plate invaded into nail matrix. Melanin granule containing cells and Merkel cells were present only on the basal layer of dorsal nail matirx.

  • An eight-year-old, castrated male, Poodle dog was presented with a bite wound in the neck region. Clinical examination revealed non-ambulatory signs of tetraparesis with deep pain, and upper motor neuron changes in all limbs. Fractures of the transverse process of C1 and the dorsal spinous process of C2 were observed on the radiographs and the computed tomography (CT). Conservative therapy was performed for 1 week. However the neurological problems were not alleviated until 7 days after injury. The owners agreed to perform surgical stabilization. The surgical stabilization was performed 7 days after presentation. Ventral stabilization was performed with screws, K-wires and bone cement. The dog stood up independently after 4 weeks and was able to walk 6 weeks postoperatively. In this report we suggest that using combined stabilization techniques are effective for this type of cervical fracture in which the dorsal and ventral structures of the vertebra are severely disrupted.

  • Scuttle fly which moves abruptly after standing for a while and stop suddenly to rush off again, is a fly species in the Phoridae family. This species like rotten organic materials and it is known to proliferate even in the industrial materials including organic solvents. Corazonin is a neuropeptide being expressed in the central nervous system (CNS) and is known to control mainly physiological functions and behaviors. Its many functions that have been proposed are still in controversy. In this studies, we found that there are three groups of corazoninergic neurons in the larval CNS of the scuttle fly and these neurons undergo distinguishable changes through metamorphic process compared to different fly species. Larva has 3 pairs of Crz neurons at the dorsolateral area of the brain, 1 pair at the dorsomedial brain and 8 pairs at the ventral nerve cord.

  • Three species of the family Processidae, Hayashidonus japonicus (De Haan, 1844), Processa sulcata Hayashi, 1975 and Processa zostericola Hayashi, 1975 described with illustrations from Korea. Two of these species, H. japonicus and P. zostericola, represent new records for the Korean carcinological fauna. The genus Hayashidonus included the single species, H. japonicus is distinguished from other genera of Processidae by the broadly triangular rostrum, the obscure or absent dorsolateral spines of the telson, and the exceptionally long molar process of the mandible. Two species of the genus Processa, P. zostericola and P. sulcata are distinguishable each other by presence or absence of an obtuse process of the basicerite of antenna on the anteroventral margin. The basicerite of antenna arms with the obtuse process in P. zostericola, while in P. sulcata the basicerite of antenna lacks the process but is smooth on the ventral margin. A key to these species is presented.

  • The plasticizer di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate(DEHP) is one of the most well known endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) because of its strong anti-androgenic effects on the reproductive and developmental process in male rodents and human. The present study was performed to examine whether prepubertal exposure to DEHP can make any alteration during the maturation of accessory sex organs in male rats. As a result, there was no significant change in body weights, serum T levels and tissue weights except of seminal vesicle and ventral prostate in DEHP-treated animals compared to vehicle-treated ones. The seminal vesicle weights in high-dose group (200 mg/kg) were significantly lower than those from the control group (p<0.05), and ventral prostate weights were significantly lower than those from the control group (p<0.05) in both low-dose (20 mg/kg) and high-dose group. Histological studies revealed that the seminal vesicles from DEHP-treated groups showed reduced areas of mucosal folds. Pseudostratified columnar epithelia were observed in the ventral prostates of DEHP-treated samples while cuboidal epithelia were found in the control group. The transcriptional activities of ER-$\alpha$ in seminal vesicle from high-dose group (p<0.05) were significantly higher than those from the control group, and ER-$\beta$ expression was significantly decreased in low-dose group (p<0.05) compared to the control. In ventral prostate, ER-$\beta$ mRNA levels from low-dose group (p<0.05) were significantly lower than those from the control group, and significantly increased in high-dose group (p<0.01). AR expressions, however, were not significantly different in all experimental groups of both seminal vesicle and ventral prostate. In conclusion, the present study demonstrated that (i) adverse effect (s) of DEHP on sexual maturation during prepubertal period could be limited, (ii) seminal vesicle and prostate gland were sensitive targets to DEHP in prepubertal rats and (iii) the deleterious effects of DEHP might be mediated through ER-associated mechanism.
