  • A forklift is a motive machine powered by LPG, diesel engine or electric motors. The internal combustion engine type forklift is equipped with automatic transmission to meet the required drive load as well as the easy operation of the vehicle. This paper deals with the shift control and endurance test controller which is developed for the functional test of the newly designed automatic transmission on a dynamometer test bench. Its major function is to control the proportional solenoid currents, which is directly related to clutch pressures, for the given reference current trajectory during shift and sequential operation of shift schedule designed for the durability test at each gear. It also has the ability to monitor all the necessary test data through RS232 communication and log them to disk files. The current controller of embedded system is designed from the identified dynamics of solenoid coil and the current reference can be easily modified with a user interface software on PC so as to match the shift data by experiments.

  • Cavitation is the dominant noise source of the marine vehicle. Of the various types of cavitation , tip vortex cavitation is the first appearance type of marine propeller cavitation and it generates high frequency noise. In this study, tip vortex cavitation behavior and noise are numerically investigated. A numerical scheme using Eulerian flow field computation and Lagrangian particle trace approach is applied to simulate the tip vortex cavitation on the hydrofoil. Vortex flow field is simulated by combined Moore and Saffman's vortex core radius equation and Sculley vortex model. Tip vortex cavitation behavior is analyzed by coupled Rayleigh-Plesset equation and trajectory equation. The cavitation nuclei are distributed and released in the vortex flow result. Vortex cavitation trajectories and radius variations are computed according to nuclei initial size. Noise is analyzed using time dependent cavitation bubble position and radius data. This study may lay the foundation for future work on vortex cavitation study and it will provide a basis for proper underwater propeller noise control strategies.

  • Many researches on use of local ground navigation systems can be found to overcome vulnerability of GNSS. Effective use of an altimeter is proposed in GNSS/DME integrated navigation systems. A weighted DOP based on statistics of measurement error is derived for a given vehicle motion trajectory. From the derived DOP, the vertical error is estimated. By comparing the estimated vertical error with error specification of the altimeter, use of the altimeter is determined in the GPS/DME integrated navigation systems. In order to show effectiveness of the proposed method, 50 times Monte-Carlo simulations were performed for a GPS/DME integrated navigation system. The results show that the proposed method gives more accurate navigation outputs when the number of GPS satellites in view varies.

  • Conventional Real Time Kinematics (RTK) collect measurements in stationary state for several minutes to resolve the integer ambiguity in the carrier phase measurement or resolve the integer ambiguity on the move assuming low maneuvering movement. In this paper, an On The Move-RTK (OTM-RTK) technique that resolves the integer ambiguity on the move for fast and precise positioning of ground vehicles such as high maneuvering vehicles was proposed. The OTM-RTK estimates the precise amount of movement between epochs using the carrier phase measurements acquired on the move, and by using this, resolves the integer ambiguity within a short period of time by evaluating the integer ambiguity candidates for each epoch. This study analyzed the integer ambiguity resolution performance using field driving experiment data in order to verify the performance of the proposed method. The results of the experiment showed that the precise trajectory including the initial position bias can be obtained prior to resolving the integer ambiguity, and after resolving the integer ambiguity on the move, it was possible to obtain the bias-corrected precise position solution. It was confirmed that the integer ambiguity can be resolved by collecting measurements of about 10 epochs from the moving vehicle using a dual frequency receiver.

  • Recently, automatic transmissions caused a good improvement in the shift quality of a forklift. An advanced shift control algorithm, which was based on TCU firmware, was applied with embedded control technology and microcontrollers. In the clutch-to-clutch shifting, one friction element is released and the other friction element is activated. During this process, if the release and application timings are not synchronized, an overrun or tie-up occurs and ultimately leads to a shift shock. The TCU, which measures only the speed of the forklift, inevitably applies the open-loop shift control. In this situation, the speed ratio does not change during the clutch fill. The torque phase occurs until the clutch is disengaged. In this study, an offline shift logic of the learning control was proposed. It induced a synchronous shift when the learning control progressed. During this process, the reference current trajectory of the release clutch was corrected and applied to the next upshift. We considered the results of the overrun/tie-up characteristics of the upshift performed immediately before. The vehicle test proved that the deviation in shift quality, which was caused by the difference in the mechanical characteristics of the clutch, could be improved by the learning control.

  • Mission opportunities and trajectory characteristics for the future Korean Mars mission have designed and analyzed using KSIV-III(Korea Space Launch Vehicle-III). Korea's first space center, 'NARO space center' is selected as a launch site. For launch opportunities, year 2033 is investigated under considering the date of space center's completion with KSLV series development status. Optimal magnitude of various maneuvers, Trans Mars Injection (TMI) maneuver, Trajectory Correction Maneuver (TCM), Mars Orbit Insertion (MOI) maneuver and Orbit Trim Maneuver(OTM), which are required during the every Mars mission phases are computed with the formulation of nonlinear optimization problems using NPSOL software. Finally, mass budgets for upper stage (launcher for KSIV-III and spacecraft are derived using various optimized maneuver magnitudes. For results, daily launch window from NARO space center for successful Korean Mars mission is avaliable for next 27 minutes starting from Apr. 16. 2033. 12:17:26 (UTC). Maximum spacecraft gross mass which can delivered to Mars is about 206kg, with propellant mass of 109kg and structure mass of 97kg, when on board spacecraft thruster's Isp is assumed to have 290 sec. For upper stage, having structure ratio of 0.15 and Isp value of 280 sec, gross mass is about 1293kg with propellant mass of 1099kg and structure mass of 194kg. However, including 10% margins to computed optimal maneuver values, spacecraft gross mass is reduced to about 148kg with upper stage's mass of 1352kg. This work will give various insights, requiring performances to developing of KSIV-III and spacecraft design for future Korean Mars missions.

  • Pedestrian deaths in Korea due to traffic accidents are 40 percent of the fatalities in traffic accidents, which is about twice the average of OECD member countries. To reduce severe pedestrian accidents, it is necessary to apply the accident reduction measures to high-risk drivers (novice, elderly, and commercial vehicle drivers) who are more likely to cause traffic accidents than general drivers. Therefore, this study analyzed the effect of safe driving education on high-risk drivers' behavior. Here, the safe driving education is chosen as the measure to reduce traffic accidents. As part of the study, sudden pedestrian crossing situations were implemented in the driving simulator, and the vehicle trajectory data were collected to compare the driving behavior before and after the education. Most surrogate safety measures showed no improvement in the driving behavior of novice and elderly drivers, and the effect of safe driving education was found to be significant only in the group of commercial vehicle drivers. The results implied that additional measures such as pedestrian safety infrastructure and driver assistance systems, apart from the safe driving education, may be needed for novice and elderly drivers to reduce pedestrian accidents caused by them. With the findings mentioned above, this study is expected to provide a foundation to establish a plan to reduce pedestrian accidents caused by high-risk drivers.

  • This study was initiated to evaluate the performance of methodologies to estimate the space mean speed(SMS) using the time mean speed(TMS) which was collected from the vehicle detection system(VDS) in expressways. To this end, the methodologies presented in prior studies were firstly summarized. It is very hard to achieve exact SMSs and TMSs due to mechanical and communication errors in the field. Thus, a microscopic traffic simulation model was utilized to evaluated the performance. As a result, the harmonic mean and volume-distance weighted harmonic mean were close to the SMS in the case in which the TMSs of individual vehicles were used. However, when the 30-second-interval aggregated TMS were used, the volume-distance weighted harmonic mean was outstanding. In this study, a radar detector was installed in the Joongbu expressway to collect the SMS. The trajectory of individual vehicles collected from the detector were used to calculate the SMS, which was compared with the estimates using other methodologies selected in this study. As a result, the volume-distance weighted mean was turned out to be close to the SMS. However, as the congestion becomes severe. the deviation between the two speed becomes bigger.

  • Exclusive bus lane (EBL) is typically located in the roadway median, and is accessed by weaving across the GPLs(general purpose lanes) before entering from the left lane of the GPLs. To maximize the potential for successful EBL operations, a critical design issue that requires special attention is the length of bus weaving section before entering EBL. The process of developing guidelines for the length of bus weaving section can be supported by a sensitivity analysis of performance measure (safety) with respect to the bus weaving distance. However, field data are difficult to obtain due to inherent complexity in creating performance measure (safety) samples under various interesting flows and bus weaving distance that are keys to research success. In this paper, VISSIM simulation is applied to simulate the operation of roadway weaving areas with EBL, and based on vehicle trajectory data from microscopic traffic simulation models, the Surrogate Safety Assessment Model (SSAM) computes the number of surrogate conflicts (or degree of safety) with respect to the bus weaving distance. Then, a multiple linear regression (MLR) model using safety data (number of surrogate conflicts) is developed. Finally, guidelines for bus weaving distance are established based on the developed MLR. Developed guidelines explicitly indicate that a longer bus weaving distance is required to maintain desired safety as weaving volume increases.
