  • On the urban scale, Micro-climate analysis models for urban scale have been developed to investigate the atmospheric characteristics in urban surface in detail and to predict the micro-climate change due to the changes in urban structure. BioCAS (Biometeorological Climate Impact Assessment System) is a system that combines such analysis models and has been implemented internally in the Korea Meteorological Administration. One of role in this system is the analysis of the health impact by heat waves in urban area. In this study, the vegetation cooling models A and B were developed and linked with BioCAS and evaluated by the temperature drop at the vegetation areas during ten selected heat-wave days. Smaller prediction errors were found as a result of applying the vegetation cooling models to the heat-wave days. In addition, it was found that the effects of the vegetation cooling models produced different results according to the distribution of vegetation area in land cover near each observation site - the improvement of the model performance on temperature analysis was different according to land use at each location. The model A was better fitted where the surrounding vegetation ratio was 50% or more, whereas the model B was better where the vegetation ratio was less than 50% (higher building and impervious areas). Through this study, it should be possible to select an appropriate vegetation cooling model according to its fraction coverage so that the temperature analysis around built-up areas would be improved.

  • The overuse in the outdoor recreation lands has been deteriorating the natural resources and landscapes. So this study was executed to measure the users'impacts on vegetation and soil at Hwaum Temple District Campsite in the Mt. Jiri National Park, the southern part of Korea. Five sites were sampled in the study area according to the extent of impact observed. Then the users'densities and impacts on vegetation and soil were measured at each site. According to the result of this study, the numbers of species and individuals and the coverage of lower-layer vegetation showed outstanding changes by only light use. The numbers of species and individuals of middle-layer vegetation, species diversity indices, change rate in species composition of lower and middle-layer vegetation, damage rate of forces, contents of clay, soil moisture and organic matters, exchangeable base ions, soil hardness, organic matter depth and bare area of the campsite showed conspicuous changes from the site 4(19.6men / 1,000㎡). Especially, the self-repair of vegetation was impossible as the result of analysis of soil hardness and the formation of natural vegetation was expected to be difficult as the result of vegetation sturcture analysis over the users'average density of 19.6men /1,000㎡. The campsite management of this area shall be proposed as follows to prevent serious deterioration of natrual environment. A limitation of the present use and a conservation on soil and vegetation should be required at the site 4 and 5. Specially, prevention of camping recreation and artificial rehabilitation are necessary at the site 5(24. 3 men/1000㎡)

  • This research was studied to inverstigate the effect of plant mixtures and tackifibers on the vegetation of slope sites. 5 type plant mixtures(tree type, forest type, native herbaceous plant type, foreign herbaceous plant type, and cool-season turfgrass type) and 3 different tackifibers (Guar tackifibers, Polyarchrylamide tackifibers and Cellulose methyl starch) were treated with 3 replications on the experimented slope. The germination and coverage rate were high on native and foreign herbaceous plants and low on cool-season turfgrass, forest and tree types. We could notice that herbaceous plant types were effective on the vegetation of slope in the short term. Because tree or forest type vegetations similar to natural plant habitat, however, were preferable on slope vegetation in the long term, tree species of high germination rate should be selected in this experiment for tree or forest type slope vegetations. Tackifiber treatments increased the germination rate during the early treatment stage. However, the effect of tackifiber treatment on germination rate was decreased on the elapse of time. Guar tackifiber treatment was most effective on the vegetation of slope. As far as soil erosion control was concerned, all tackifiber treatments were effective compared to control.

  • The NDVI(normalized difference vegetation index) dataset is unique or main tool to assess the global, multi seasonal, multi annual, and multi spectral changes over the World. These features are useful for environmental studies in particular, for the vegetation coverage monitoring of the country as Mongolia, where are large pastureland and pastoral animal husbandry, which dependent on natural conditions. Pasture vegetation cover is changing accordingly with both of global climate change and anthropogenic effect or human impacts. Using past 20 years (1982-2001) NDVI derived from NOAA satellite, its dynamical trend has been decreased in all natural zones differently. Also applied the method named "Two Years Differences" which could calculate the number of years with increased or decreased NDVI values at the same place. From May to September have occurred the 9 years maximum decreases of NDVI over Mongolia, but it obtained differently in spatial and temporal scale. In 24.4 ? 32.7% of all territory occurred one year decrease of NDVI and in 18% occurred more than 3 years frequent decrease of NDVI. According to the linear trend of NDVI and in 18% occurred more than 3 years frequent decrease of NDVI dynamics over 69% of whole territory of Mongolia NDVI values had been decreased due to both natural and human induced impacts to the pasture condition. In this paper also included some results of the integrated analyses of NOAA/NDVI and ground truth data over Monglia separately by natural zones.

  • Satellite and airborne hyperspectral sensor images are suitable for investigating the vegetation state in agricultural land. However, image data obtained by an optical sensor inevitably includes mixels caused by high altitude observation. Therefore, mixel analysis method, which estimates both the pure spectra and the coverage of endmembers simultaneously, is required in order to distinguish the qualitative spectral changes due to the chlorophyll quantity or crop variety, from the quantitative coverage change. In this paper, we apply our agricultural independent component analysis (ICA) model to an airborne hyperspectral sensor image, which includes noise and fluctuation of coverage, and estimate pure spectra and the mixture ratio of crop and soil in agricultural land simultaneously.

  • This study introduced food waste into re-vegetation base materials for surface loss recovery of carry-away highway cut slope. The object of this study is to derive the mixing ratio of food waste by conducting a test installation, monitoring, analysis and evaluation for recovery of carry-away highway cut slope. The following items were investigated and analyzed each experimental zone to draw mixing ratio of re-vegetation base materials and food waste : the physical and chemical properties of the vegetation base materials, soil-hardness, soil-humidity, left out and the collapsed point, established number of trees, species richness of grass species and tree species, coverage, pest status, and invasion of disturbance species. The re-vegetation method was evaluated by each experiment zone which has different mixing ratio. As a result, experiment zone A was rated 45 points out of 60 rating points as the best re-vegetation method. However, this study result has been derived from one construction and short-term monitoring. In order to derive the suitable and dependable mixing ratio, conducting an objective re-vegetation method evaluation and long-term experiment and monitoring is required.

  • This study is a basic research with the aim of developing the method of judging the leakage zone by grasping the habitat characteristic of agricultural reservoir slope in inhabiting characteristics appear differently according to natural inhabiting environment. To this end, this study is intending to investigate slope vegetation using a quadrat technique at Sinheung reservoir located at Gwangsi-myeon, Yesan-gun, Chungnam, and to perform the analysis of importance value using relative frequency and relative coverage, etc. Also, this study intended to present the necessity of having to consider the eco-system of the relevant region in time of a reservoir slope afforestation for the time to come by suggesting that the reservoir slope vegetation after a stable period becomes similar to the regional vegetation by comparing this study result with the existing research which carried out the analysis of importance value of forest vegetation for Yesan Region. The reservoir slope vegetation is similar to the indicator species which appear in the regional forest vegetation, so there was a need to select afforestation species in the light of this in time of slope afforestation. As a result of the analysis of the importance value, this study grasped that there was an emergence characteristic similar to the vegetation at a birthplace of a forest fires because growth and development of forest trees, and perennial plants were restricted by annually implemented brush-cutting work, etc.; however, indigo plant and bush clover, etc. were found to show the characteristic differing from this. Consequently, this study was able to confirm that there is the necessity of having to create the Importance Value Table suited for reservoir slopes by region through a lot more data construction in the near future.

  • Stages of vegetation development on talus area were studied to examine temporal changes in species composition and vegetation structure, and to elucidate the mechanism of early patch formation. While ground coverage of lichens, which may form substrate for moss colonization and mitigate the heat-stress on rocks, decreased gradully, coverage of mosses increased slightly during primary succession. Ecological role of mossess related with water retention in community may be very important not only at pioneer stage but also at later stages because of little soil development on this talus area. Species diversity and species richness increased during the early stages of succession. Parthenocis년 tricuspidata and Sorbaria sorbifolia var. stellipa dominated in liana stage, Ulmus davidiana for. suberosa and Lindera obtusiloba in shrub stage, and Fraxinus rhynchophylla and Actinidia arguta in subtree stage, however, was composed of mixed forest of several tree species. U. davidiana for. suberosa, L. obtusiloba, Securinega suffruticosa and Rhus chinensis were relatively important woody species in early patch forming process. The results, however, suggested that early establishment on talus area might be strongly associated with chance for safe-site because both pioneer species and later species could take part in early patch forming process.
