Dielectric Properties of $SrTiO_3$-based varistors ($SrTiO_3$ 바리스터의 유전특성)

  • In this study capacitance and dielectric loss factor were measured with low-voltage signal and the simulation of equivalent circuits for the data were conducted. As the result it was showed that the equivalent circuit model considered the gram-boundary structure with semiconducting layer, dielectric layer and depletion layer was well approximated with the observed data. Various parameters were determined by a optimum curve-fitting method and could be used to analyze the varistor-voltages and the nonlinear coefficient of varistors. It also seems that the proposed equivalent circuit model will be adopted for other BL type varistors.

  • ZnO varistors have been widely used to protect power system and electronic system against overvoltages based on their excellent nonlinearity. In order to increase their protection capability, ZnO varistors are chosen by several electrical parameters according to their applications, namely 1mA DC voltage, 1eakage currents, impulse residual voltages, withstanding capability to impulse surge, and energy absorption capability. But these Parameters have scattering properties due to the nonuniformity of electrical characteristics. In this study, the effect of the microstructrual nonuniformity on the surge absorption capability of ZnO varistors.

Effect of Heat Treatment on the Nonlinear Exponents in ZnO Varistors (열처리에 따른 ZnO 바리스터의 비직선 계수의 영향)

  • Nonlinear exponents and electron trap density variations were observered in ZnO-Bi2O3-MnO2 ternary ZnO varistors as a function of heat treatment temperature. Three kinds of ZnO varistor compositions were selected; i.e. 99.0 ZnO-0.5 Bi2O3-0.5 MnO2, 98.5 ZnO-1.0 Bi2O3-0.5 MnO2, and 98.0 ZnO-1.5 Bi2O3-0.5 MnO2 in mol%. Sintering was done at 1150$^{\circ}C$ for three hours, and heat treatments were done at 500$^{\circ}C$, 700$^{\circ}C$, and 900$^{\circ}C$. When heat treated at 500$^{\circ}C$, nonlinear exponents were increased regardless of the Bi2O3 amount. Increasing heat treatment temperature above 500$^{\circ}C$ resulted in lowering nonlinear exponents. Nonlinear exponents seem to be related to the 0.17 and 0.33 eV electron traps which are possibly of intrinsic origin.

  • The electrical properties and stability of ZPCCY-based varistors composing of ZnO-Pr$_{6}$ O$_{11}$ -CoO-Cr$_2$O$_3$-Y$_2$O$_3$ ceramics were investigated with sintering time. As sintering time is increased, the nonlinear exponent decreased in the range of 51.19∼26.70. Among varistors having above 30 in nonlinear exponent, for the varistor sintered for 1h, the nonlinearity was superior to the stability comparatively and, in the case of 2h, the stability was superior to the nonlinearity relatively. Consequently, it is estimated that the varistors sintered for 1∼2h will be applied to various fields by trade-off between nonlinearity and stability.

  • The electrical properties of ZPCCE (ZnO-Pr$_{6}$O$_{11}$-CoO-Cr$_2$O$_3$-Er$_2$O$_3$) based varistors were investigated with sintering temperature in range of 1335 to 135$0^{\circ}C$ for 1h. As the sintering temperature increases, the nonlinear exponent decreased, but was high beyond 40 except for 1.0 mol% Er$_2$O$_3$. Among all ZPCCE varistors, the varistor having the highest nonlinear exponent was obtained by sintering at 1335$^{\circ}C$, containing 2.0 mol% Er$_2$O$_3$ and then the nonlinear exponent was 78.05, and the varistors with 0.5 mol% Er$_2$O$_3$ exhibited the lowest leakage current of 1.92 $\mu$A.A.A.

  • Recently, the natural environment changes drastically, and the frequency of occurrence for lightning has gradually been increased. Such lightning delivers high volume of energy along the power line and communication line to the equipment in use. The high volume of energy arising from the lightning surge develops in fast velocity to destroy the facilities in power source and many other facilities in operation in sequential destruction with vast energy. In this thesis, the analysis on the change of clamping voltage characteristics by the contact resistance and lead inductance by using several case studies through the application of element for preventing the short circuit of Metal Oxide Varistor for ZnO.

  • This paper presents the leakage current characteristics of ZnO varistors exposed to the $8/20{\mu}s$ lightning impulse currents as functions of the number of injection and amplitude of impulse currents. The surge simulator system ECAT that can generate $8/20{\mu}s$ impulse currents with a peak short-circuit of $5[kA_p]$ was used. Leakage currents flowing through ZnO varistors subjected to the $8/20{\mu}s$ impulse currents were measured under 60 Hz AC voltages. The trend curves of resistive leakage current of ZnO varistors were analytically calculated.

  • There are several ways to bond to building grounding systems for reducing GPR(ground potential rise) and EMI resulting from power system faults or lightning stroke to building. In order to verify effective bonding practice, the GPR and voltage of equipment due to the direct stroke to building are calculated with ATP-EMTP model for transformer, transmission line and MOV(Metal oxide varistor). The simulated model shows a satisfactory accuracy compared with experimental result for the $8/20{\mu}s$ simulated current pulse. It is observed that separate grounding can cause dangerous voltage to the building equipment and the performance of surge protective device can improve when it is installed to the protected equipment in distance as short as possible.

  • This paper describes the long duration withstand current characteristics of ZnO varistors. Two ZnO varistors were manufactured with general ceramic production methods and three abroad varistors were also prepared to be compared. During long duration withstand test, sample 1 was destroyed at 4th impulse current but the rest passed test. Before and After the test, the residual voltage variation of varistors passed was below 5%. According to the test results, it is thought that the manufacturing process such as insulating coating, sintering condition and soldering method should be improved.

  • The characteristics of varistors based on M.Matstuokas with one another ZnO powder (50nm, 100nm, 300nm) have been investigated. The optimum calcination and sintering temperature was also selected for each samples. Varieties of sintering conditions were found according to powder size. As the result of analysises on each operating voltages. We obtained the most high voltage in a sample with 50nm ZnO powder.
