  • The demand for high performance computer grows to solve large linear systems of equations in such engineering fields - circuit simulation for VLSI design, image processing, structural engineering, aerodynamics, etc. Many various parallel processing systems have been proposed and manufactured to satisfy the demand. The properties of linear system determine what algorithm is proper to solve the problem. Direct methods or iterative methods can be used for solving the problem. In this paper, an intelligent parallel iterative method for solving linear systems of equations with large sparse matrices is proposed and its efficiency is proved through simulation.

  • Edge is a characteristic information that can easily obtain the size, direction and location of objects included in the image, and the edge detection is utilized as a preprocess processing in various image processing application sectors such as object detection and object recognition, etc. For the conventional edge detection methods, there are Sobel, Prewitt and Roberts. These existing edge detection methods are easy to implement but the edge detection characteristics are somewhat insufficient as fixed weighted mask is applied. Therefore, in order to compensate the problems of existing edge detection methods, in this paper, an edge detection algorithm was proposed after applying the weighted value according to the standard deviation and means within the local mask.

  • For multipoint video conference of using multimedia communication terminals, terminals are logically connected each other, and there are centralized method and distributed method in connection between terminals. Multipoint control unit is needed for the centralized method, there are two methods for implementaion such as digital method and analog method. For a meaning and implementation method of multipoint control init, main funtions of multipoint control unit are summarized and the various implementation methods are proposed in this paper.

  • Currently, edge detection is utilized in various areas. Edge detection is the preprocessing process for image processing in general, and this is a technology that is considered essential for image processing. According, research on this subject is carried out incessantly. Edge has important image related elements such as size, direction and location of the object of an image. Numerous methods were proposed for the detection. Among them, the representative methods are Sobel, Prewitt, Roberts, Laplacian. However, these existing methods are rather lacking when it comes to the edge detection characteristics in case of the image with mixed noise. Therefore, this study presented edge detection method that utilizes median and average values for the elements depending on the size and location of local mask.

Improvement of WRF forecast meteorological data by Model Output Statistics using linear, polynomial and scaling regression methods

  • The Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models determine the future state of the weather by forcing current weather conditions into the atmospheric models. The NWP models approximate mathematically the physical dynamics by nonlinear differential equations; however these approximations include uncertainties. The errors of the NWP estimations can be related to the initial and boundary conditions and model parameterization. Development in the meteorological forecast models did not solve the issues related to the inevitable biases. In spite of the efforts to incorporate all sources of uncertainty into the forecast, and regardless of the methodologies applied to generate the forecast ensembles, they are still subject to errors and systematic biases. The statistical post-processing increases the accuracy of the forecast data by decreasing the errors. Error prediction of the NWP models which is updating the NWP model outputs or model output statistics is one of the ways to improve the model forecast. The regression methods (including linear, polynomial and scaling regression) are applied to the present study to improve the real time forecast skill. Such post-processing consists of two main steps. Firstly, regression is built between forecast and measurement, available during a certain training period, and secondly, the regression is applied to new forecasts. In this study, the WRF real-time forecast data, in comparison with the observed data, had systematic biases; the errors related to the NWP model forecasts were reflected in the underestimation of the meteorological data forecast by the WRF model. The promising results will indicate that the post-processing techniques applied in this study improved the meteorological forecast data provided by WRF model. A comparison between various bias correction methods will show the strength and weakness of the each methods.

  • Mesh denoising is a method to remove noise applying various filters. However, those methods usually spend much time since filtering is performed on CPU. Because GPU is specialized for floating point operations and faster than CPU, real-time processing for complex operations is possible. Especially mesh denoising is adequate for GPU parallel processing since it repeats the same operations for vertices or triangles. In this paper, we propose mesh denoising algorithm based on bilateral filtering using GPU parallel processing to reduce processing time. It finds neighbor triangles of each vertex for applying bilateral filter, and computes its normal vector. Then it performs bilateral filtering to estimate new vertex position and to update its normal vector.

  • The differential power processor (DPP) system is used to prevent a decrease in the total power generation due to the partial shading of photovoltaic modules. Compared with traditional series strings and full power processing (FPP) converter solutions, the DPP converter system shows advantages in terms of modularization process, volume, and transformation losses. However, the system has a limitation in that the power generation process of differential power processors produces lower power under certain irradiation conditions. This paper proposes a structure and operating algorithm for differential power processing modules that can use a single power converter for multiple strings. The operational algorithm for the differential power regulators allows the maximum power generation to be maintained in comparison with conventional series-connected and differential power processing methods even under various partial shading conditions. The operation algorithm of the proposed DPP is verified by Matlab/Simulink simulations.

Supplementary effects of higher levels of various disaccharides on processing yield, quality properties and sensory attributes of Chinese - style pork jerky

  • Objective: This study evaluated the supplementary effect of higher concentrations of various disaccharides on processing yield, major physicochemical properties, and sensory attributes of Chinese-style pork jerky (CSPJ). Methods: CSPJ samples were prepared by marinating sliced ham (4 mm) with three dissaccharides, including sucrose, lactose, and maltose, at 0%, 15%, 18%, 21%, and 24%. Subsequently, the CSPJ samples were dried and roasted. The moisture content, water activity, crude protein, moisture-to-protein ratio, pH, processing yield, shear force, color, and sensory attributes of the CSPJ samples were evaluated. Results: The quality characteristics of CSPJ samples prepared with sucrose were more acceptable. By contrast, CSPJ samples prepared with lactose showed the lowest scores. However, the processing yield and moisture content were the highest for CSPJ samples prepared with lactose, which may be associated with improved benefits for cost reduction. Furthermore, sucrose and lactose supplementation resulted in contrasting quality characteristics; for example, CSPJ samples with sucrose and maltose supplementation had higher sensory scores for color than samples with lactose supplementation. Additionally, most quality characteristics of CSPJ samples with sucrose supplementation contrasted with those of the samples with lactose supplementation; for example, the samples with sucrose supplementation had higher scores for sensory attributes than those with lactose supplementation. Conclusion: Sucrose supplementation up to 21% to 24% was associated with the highest overall acceptability scores (5.19 to 5.80), enhanced quality characteristics, increased processing yield, and reduced production cost.

Development of a Plum (Japanese Apricot) Seed Remover for Multipurpose Plum Flesh Processing

  • Purpose: Japanese Apricot, a type of plum, has various medicinal and economical applications. Plums are quite popular worldwide, but their deseeding remains a serious impediment to their processing. Therefore, a plum (Japanese Apricot) seed remover (PSR) was developed that can use various types of cutters according to the purpose of the plum processing, and its performance was evaluated. Methods: The proposed PSR, which allows multipurpose cutters, namely, zero-, two-, and four-blade cutters, to be installed, was first designed and manufactured. To identify appropriate parameters related to the cutting pressure, plums were harvested from three regions during three harvesting periods, and their geometrical and mechanical properties were measured. After application of the parameters related to the cutting pressure, a performance test was carried out on both fresh and frozen plums by identifying the ratios of the flesh recovery, seed recovery, seed breakage, deseeding efficiency, and machine efficiency. Results: The results show that, using the proper calculation of the processing parameters, 100% deseeding efficiency was facilitated regardless of the type of cutter used. However, in the case of a four-blade cutter, there are significant differences in the flesh recovery ratio according to the plum setting angle. Between the fresh and frozen plums, all cutters showed a significantly better flesh recovery ratio for the case of fresh plums. Conclusions: This machine will advance the plum processing technology, and eventually help the plum industry flourish.

Variable Step LMS Algorithm using Fibonacci Sequence (피보나치 수열을 활용한 가변스텝 LMS 알고리즘)

  • Adaptive signal processing is quite important in various signal and communication environments. In adaptive signal processing methods since the least mean square(LMS) algorithm is simple and robust, it is used everywhere. As the step is varied in the variable step(VS) LMS algorithm, the fast convergence speed and the small excess mean square error can be obtained. Various variable step LMS algorithms are researched for better performances. But in some of variable step LMS algorithms the computational complexity is quite large for better performances. The fixed step LMS algorithm with a low computational complexity merit and the variable step LMS algorithm with a fast convergence merit are combined in the proposed sporadic step algorithm. As the step is sporadically updated, the performances of the variable step LMS algorithm can be maintained in the low update rate using Fibonacci sequence. The performances of the proposed variable step LMS algorithm are proved in the adaptive equalizer.
