  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of shattered grain by combine harvesting at the previous year on rice plant emergence at different planting methods and plant characteristics, The results are follows : Combine harvesting greatly influence on shattered grain of Samgangbyeo as Tongil variety (49.5kg/10a) compared to that of Nagdongbyeo as Japonica variety(27.8kg/10a), while Nagdong-byeo showed higher germination rate than Samgangbyeo, whether transplanted and direct seeded. Emergence of volunteer and seed mixture were lower in transplanted than in direct seeded. In variety test. Japonica variety showed higher emergence of volunteer rice and seed mixture than Tongil variety. Generally, no significant difference in yield components were observed with different varieties by the volunteer rice. But the volunteer rice caused by combine harvesting decreased culm length, panicle length, spikelet number, panicle number and ripening ratio. except l000-grain weights.

  • A multiplex RT-PCR (mRT-PCR) assay was developed for the detection of the recently reported viruses, Cherry virus A (CVA), Little cherry virus 1 (LChV-1), and Little cherry virus 2 (LChV-2), in cherry plants in Korea. Eight sets of primers were designed for each virus and their specificity was tested by using various combinations of mixed primer sets. From the designed primer sets, one combination was selected and further evaluated to estimate the optimum temperature and detection limits of the mRT-PCR. A newly developed mRT-PCR assay was also tested using 20 cherry samples collected in the field. This mRT-PCR assay may be a useful tool for field surveys of diseases and the rapid detection of these three viruses in cherry plants.

  • A new flue - cured tobacco variety KF113 was developed by Nicotiana africana method from a cross of NC82 and Coker 347 at the Suwon Experiment Station. It was tested in the 0fficial Variety Test in 1991-1992 and the flue - cured Regional Farm Test in 1992. KFl13 flowers 4 days later than WC82 (standard variety in Korea) and its harvestable leaves are 2 more than those of NC82. The leaf type and shape of KFl13 resembles Coker 347. It has high resistance to bacterial wilt (Pseudomonas solanacearum) and black shank (Phytophthora parasitica var. nicotianae), and is susceptible to tobacco mosaic virus. It should adapt well to the flue - cured production area and can reduce premature flowering under unfavorable weather conditions. Yield of KFl13 is 5% higher than that of NC82, and nearly equal in value per kg compare with NC82. This variety met acceptable standards for chemical and physical characteristics of cured leaf and for smoking taste evaluated by panel members in Korea Ginseng & Tobacco Research Institute.

  • Since ancient times, various herbal medicines have been used in folk medicine to treat a variety of diseases. While the majority of drugs belong to the Kingdom of Plantae, some drugs from the Kingdom of Animalia are listed in various Materia medica of alternative medicines. Animal-derived drugs are mentioned in the Unani system of Medicine (USM) and have been used successfully to treat a variety of diseases. Marjān (Corallium rubrum) is a vital marine drug of animal origin that has been used in USM since ancient times and continues to be used today. It possesses a variety of beneficial pharmacological properties, including tonic effects on the heart, brain, stomach, and eyes, pregnancy protection, expectorant, and hemostyptic properties. It is used to treat hemoptysis, palpitation, bleeding piles, hemiplegia, heart failure, and general weakness. It is also an ingredient in a variety of Unani formulations with pharmacological significance. Unani physicians expanded the uses of Marjan and successfully used it to treat a variety of new diseases. There is a dearth of scientific research on its pharmacological and medicinal properties. The urgent need is to validate the Unani claims about its beneficial cardiac and nervine actions, as well as other significant actions mentioned in the Unani literature.
