  • In this study, the automatic face tracking algorithm is proposed by using the color and edge information of a color image. To reduce the effects of variations in the illumination conditions, an acquired CCD color image is first transformed into YCbCr color coordinates, and subsequently the morphological image processing operations, and the elliptical geometric measures are applied to extract the refined facial area.

  • This paper presents a computational method for a confidence region of identified parameters which are affected by measurement noise and error contained in prescribed parameters. The method is based on sensitivities of the identified parameters with respect to model parameter error and measurement noise along with the law of error propagation. By conducting numerical experiments on simple models, it is confirmed that the confidence region coincides well with the results of numerical experiments. Furthermore, the optimum arrangement of sensor locations is evaluated when uncertainty exists in prescribed parameters, based on the concept that square sum of coefficients of variations of identified results attains minimum. Good agreement of the theoretical results with those of numerical simulation confirmed validity of the theory.

  • This study analyzed the A1B climate change scenario provided by National Institute of Meteorological Research (NIMR), Korea, to investigate potential climate changes in watersheds of 15 multi-purpose dams in South Korea. The A1B climate change scenario is produced by Regional Climate Model (RCM) with 27 km horizontal grid spacings using a one-way nesting technique with Global Climate Model (GCM). Relative to present climate conditions (1971~ 2000), the modeled 10-year averaged daily temperatures at the watersheds of the 15 multi-purpose dams continuously increased to year 2100, whereas precipitation changes were varied regionally (north, central, and south regions of South Korea). At two watersheds located in Gangwon-province (north region), the modeled temporal variations of precipitation rapidly increased in the 2090's after a slow decrease that had occurred since the 2050's. At seven watersheds in the central region, including Gyeongsangbuk-province to Jeollanam-province, the modeled temporal variations of precipitation increase showed 10-year periodic changes. At six watersheds in the south region, the modeled temporal variations of precipitation increased since the 2070's after a rapid decrease in the 2060's. Compared to the climate conditions of the late of 20th century (1971~2000), the number of rainy days and precipitation intensity increased (3% and 6~12%, respectively) in the late 21st century (2071~2100). The frequency of precipitation events tended to increase with precipitation intensity in all regions. The frequency of heavy precipitation events (>50 mm $d^{-1}$) increased with >100% in the north region, 60~100% in the central region, and 20~60% in the south region.

  • In this paper, a smoke detection algorithm robust to brightness and color variations depending on time and weather is proposed. The proposed smoke detection algorithm specifies the candidate region using difference images of input and background images, determines smoke by comparing feature coefficients of Gaussian mixture model of difference images. Thresholds for specifying candidate region is divided by four levels according to average brightness and chrominance of input images. Clusters of Gaussian mixture models of difference images are aligned according to average brightness. Smoke is determined by comparing distance of Gaussian mixture model parameters. The proposed algorithm is implemented by media dedicated DSP. As results of experiments, it is shown that the proposed algorithm is effective to detect smoke with camera installed outdoor.

  • Background The innervated radial artery superficial palmar branch (iRASP) flap was designed to provide consistent innervation by the palmar cutaneous branch of the median nerve (PCMN) to a glabrous skin flap. The iRASP flap is used to achieve coverage of diverse volar defects of digits. However, unexpected anatomical variations can affect flap survival and outcomes. Methods Cases in which patients received iRASP flaps since April 1, 2014 were retrospectively investigated by reviewing the operation notes and intraoperative photographs. The injury type, flap dimensions, arterial and neural anatomy, secondary procedures, and complications were evaluated. Results Twenty-eight cases were reviewed, and no flap failures were observed. The observed anatomical variations were the absence of a direct skin perforator, large-diameter radial artery superficial palmar branch (RASP), and the PCMN not being a single branch. Debulking procedures were performed in 16 cases (57.1%) due to flap bulkiness. Conclusions In some cases, an excessively large RASP artery was observed, even when there was no direct skin perforator from the RASP or variation in the PCMN. These findings should facilitate application of the iRASP flap, as well as any surgical procedures that involve potential damage to the PCMN in the inter-thenar crease region. Additional clinical cases will provide further clarification regarding potential anatomical variations.

  • Visual features of lip area play an important role in the visual speech information. We are concerned about correct lip area as region of interest (ROI). In this paper, we propose a robust and fast method for locating the mouth corners. Also, we define a region of interest at mouth during speech. A method, which we have used, only uses the horizontal and vertical image operators at mouth area. This searching is performed by fitting the ROI-template to image with illumination control. Most of the lip extraction algorithms are dependent on luminosity of image. We just used the binary image where the variable threshold is applied. The variable threshold varies to illumination condition. In order to control those variations, the gray-tone is converted to binary image by threshold, which is obtained through Multiple Linear Regression Analysis (MLRA) about divided 2D special region. Thus we obtained the region of interest at mouth area, which is the robust extraction about illumination. A region of interest is automatically extracted.

  • In a 200 mm Cz-Si crystal, a macroscopic fluctuation in pulling rate was intentionally introduced then the variations of the pulling rate and the formation behaviors of grow-in defects were compared. The diameters of the OSF-ring and the FPD area were affected by the fluctuation in the region above 1100℃. The COP density depended on the diameter of the OSF-ring. ΔOi and BMD were affected by the fluctuation in the region near 1000Δ. As the result, when a macroscopic fluctuation in pulling rate is introduced, the quality of crystal in the region of 150 mm from the growth interface should be reviewed carefully because it can be affected by the fluctuation.

  • Stator Transient inductance has much influence on rotor flux orientation. In this paper, a new simple on-line tuning scheme of inductances including stator transient inductance for rotor flux orientation control is proposed. Detuned effects caused by inductance variations are shown and simple on-line tuning scheme of them is proposed. Inductances are estimated and tuned by only stator flux and stator current. The proposed scheme is effective in wide speed region including the field weakening region. The proposed on-line tuning scheme is confirmed by the simulation and experiment results.

  • We have demonstrated a highly sensitive temperature sensor using an etched single mode fiber with a thermally expanded core region. Large core size of thermally expanded core facilitates access to evanescent wave by the wet etching. The etched region was surrounded by a low dispersive external medium with high thermo-optic coefficient. Due to the large difference between the dispersion property of the fiber and that of the external medium, the device reveals a cut-off properties at spectral region. The cut-off wavelength was shifted by the variations of the environmental temperatures because of thermo-optic effect of the external medium. The sensitivity of the fabricated device was found to be $45nm/^{\circ}C$.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate diurnal variations of snowstorm occurred along the East Coast of the Korean Peninsula. The snowstorm which occurred on 5${\sim}$7 January 1997 have been analyzed. The pressure patterns were analyzed through surface and upper-air chart(850hPa). Diurnal variations of four areas, i. e. Youngdong, Mt. Taebaek, Youngseo and Kyungbuk regions were analyzed through wind direction and speed, cloud amounts, surface temperature, dewpoint temperature, relative humidity and sea level pressure. And snowfall amounts over four areas were analyzed through regional distribution, daily and temporal variations. The snowfall which occurred on January 5 was caused by the weak low pressure which is located in Kyusu region of Japan. The snowfall of January 6 occurred due to the Siberian high's expansion and instability. And northeasterly wind is one factor of the snowstorm which occurred in Mt. Taebaek region on 7 January. Heavy snowfall was caused by westerly wind but easterly wind occurred weak snowfall in Youngdong area. The precipitation of Kyungbuk region(eapecially, Pohang) was less than that of Youngdong region because the air mass which was not modified had influence on Kyungbuk region on 6${\sim}$7 January, 1997.
