An importance-performance analysis of using farmers in a rice co-nursery : Focus on the East Gunsan Agricultural Cooperative

  • With an aging population in rural areas, farm owners in South Korea are also aging. In particular, this phenomenon leads to the lack of human resources in rural areas and agriculture, worsening the deterioration of the rural economy. This study aimed, firstly, to analyze the criticality of the lack of human resources and high production cost issues for farmers, before using the farm as cooperative nursery of rice seedlings. Secondly, the study analyzed farmer satisfaction after using the farm cooperative. Analysis results are as follows. The motives of the research subjects for using the co-nursery were the aging of the farming population, the expected reduction of production costs, and farmers' failure in raising seedlings. Importance-performance analysis measured the importance for the farms for cooperative raising of rice seedling at 3.49 and the performance for the farms at 3.41, with a difference of 0.07 between them. The four importance-performance matrix areas, used were as follows: concentrated efforts required (Quadrant I: concentrate here), continuous maintenance (Quadrant II: keep up the good work), gradual improvement (Quadrant III: low priority), and avoiding excessive efforts (Quadrant IV: possible overkill). Based on the results, it was concluded that improvements and efforts would be necessary for each of these areas. And, there is a need to improve services through the initiation of farmer use of this rice co-nursery.

Is the Agricultural Work a Risk Factor for Koreans Elderly Spinal Sagittal Imbalance?

  • Objective : A primary degenerative sagittal imbalance has been considered because of unique lifestyles such as the prolonged crouched posture during agricultural work and performing activities of daily living on the floor. Previous papers have reported that sagittal imbalance disease is often seen distinctly in the farming districts of "oriental" countries such as Korea and Japan. However, this finding was only evaluated with the use of X-ray, and other factors such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), muscle volume, compression fracture, and laboratory results were not considered. Thus, using these, we evaluate the agricultural work-associated factors for Korean elderly spinal sagittal imbalance. Methods : We recruited 103 Korean participants who had a sagittal vertical axis (SVA) of >5 cm in this Korean Elderly Sagittal Imbalance Cohort Study. The following were evaluated : radiological parameters, MRI, compression fracture, vitamin D, parathyroid hormone, C-terminal telopeptide, osteocalcin, bone mineral density and muscle fatty change, muscle volume, and health-related quality of life from patients' survey. Moreover, in this survey, the farmers' annual working hours were investigated. Subsequently, we analyzed the associated factors for spinal sagittal imbalance depending on occupation. Results : A total of 46 participants were farmers, and the others were housewives, sellers, and office workers. The farmer group had more SVA (141 vs. 99 mm, p=0.001) and pelvic tilt (31° vs. 24°, p=0.004) and lesser lumbar lordosis (20° vs. 30°, p=0.009) and thoracic kyphosis (24° vs. 33°, p=0.03) than non-farmer group. A significantly positive correlation was noted between the working hour and SVA in the farmer group (p=0.014). The visual analogue scale score for back pain (8.26 vs. 6.96, p=0.008) and Oswestry Disability Index (23.5 vs. 19.1, p=0.003) in the farmer group were higher than that in the non-farmer group, but the Short Form-36 score was not significantly different between the two groups. The Mini-Mental State Exam score was significantly lower in the farmer group than in the non-farmer group (24.85 vs. 26.98, p=0.002). Conclusion : The farmer group had more sagittal imbalance and back pain in proportion to the working hours even though the muscle and bone factors and general laboratory condition were not significantly different between the two groups. These results supported that the long hours spent in the crouched posture while performing agricultural work were a risk factor for severe sagittal imbalance.

Cost-Benefit Analysis of the Farmer's Health Center Project (FHCP) in Rural Korea (농업인건강관리실 사업의 비용편익 분석)

  • This study aims to examine the operating status of the Farmer's Health Center Project and the validity of its business using the benefit-cost analysis. As the pilot project of the Rural Development Adminstration from 1996, a total of 884 Farmer's Health Centers were established until 2004. Internal information of the RDA management unit was used for the analysis. A questionnaire with an interview was also performed with 70 over 468 Centers that had been established from 2001 to 2004. Results were as follows. 1) The Center was mainly used by elderly over 60 years, which took 71.4%. Winter was the most popular season for visiting. 2) Approximately 71% of the manager of the Center pointed out the deficiency of fuel cost as the most difficulty in operating the Center. 3) Users were moderately satisfied with facility and the effect of its use, which took 3.5 point over 5 scale. 4) For the cost-benefit analysis on the Centers, both 5% of social discount rate and 15 years of use term were assumed. Subsequently, the Net Present Value was 3,134 million won, which certified the validity of the business.

  • Understanding farmer household and community management of crop diversity is necessary in order to effectively strengthen the local plant genetic resources management system in Vietnam, Assessment and management for distribution of farmer's cultivars of rice, taro and tropical tree species were conducted in four different agro-ecological zones in Vietnam using participatory approaches, focus surveys, diversity fairs, agro-morphological field trials, isozyme analysis to understand why Vietnamese farmers grow diverse types of these crop cultivars, when and where these crops cultivars are grown and how farmers maintain and use them. Results showed significant differences in the extent, distribution and use pattern crop cultivars diversity in contrasting environments and between community farmer households. Seed system is an important role in the access and use of diversity in eco-geographical regions.

  • 멀티미디어 통신 등 서비스 광대역화를 위하여 PSTN, PCN 및 B-lSDN 등과 같은 기존의 망과 연동되게 될 IMT-2000 통신망은 기존의 통신망들이 서로 다른 하드웨어와 운영체제 등 상이한 플랫폼 환경 하에서 개발되어 있는 관계로 망관리 시스템을 구축하는 과정에서 통합 및 유지보수 상의 여러 문제점이 대두되게 된다. 이와 같은 문제점을 해결하기 위하여 본 논문에서는 I-Farmer 모델(Intelligent-Farmer Model)에 기반한 ITS(ISM-Node to SIB) 알고리즘을 제안한다. ITS 알고리즘은 I-Farmer 모델로 설계한 에이전트 시스템 중 Entity Node 및 ILB / OLB 컴포넌트를 AIN의 GFP(Global Functional Plane)내의 SIB 및 시스템 응용프로그램 생성 컴포넌트인 지능망 ASIB로 변형(transformation)해주는 알고리즘이다.

  • The role of female farmers is getting more important in decreasing of farmhouses, lack of young farmer, feminization and aging of farming population. In reality, female farmers have done two things of housework and farming. They have lived in the low level of welfare and cultural activities. The purpose of this study is to analyze the implementation and operation situations of the women farmers' happiness voucher policy in Chungnam, in order to suggest development measures. The results of this analysis are as follows: First, female farmers had high awareness and satisfaction for the happiness voucher. Second, they were not satisfied with selectable terms. Third, there was a limit to use the full amount due to low accessibility in rural areas. Fourth, the subsidy scale and the self-burden fee was not appropriate.

Disease, Accident and Health Behavior of in Farmers and Fishermen (농림어업인의 상병실태 및 건강행태 분석)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to analyze agricultural accident and disease using statistical data and materials about National Survey for Health & Nutrition in 2001 and to provide fundamental materials for studies about farmers' health and safety, decision of priority about research and policy. Results: Diagnosed chronic disease prevalence is 72.4% in farmer/fisher group, 49.8% in non farmer/fisher group. The chronic disease prevalence of musculoskeletal disease, circulatory disease, and gastroenteric disease is 46.5%, 18.2%, and 17.9% in farmer/fisher group respectively. The prevalence of musculoskeletal disease in farmer/fisher is 2.4 times higher than non farmer/fisher. This result shows that it need to evaluation for risk factors of musculoskeletal disease preferentially. Lifetime accident/poisoning rate is 18.2% In farmer/fisher group and 13.3% in non farmer/fisher group. The types of accidents were fracture>sprain>contusion and the reasons of accidents were traffic accident>falling/sliding. Conclusions: "Bad or very bad" response of farmer/fisher is almost 2 times higher than non farmer/fisher group. The rate of smoking and no exercising in farmer/fisher group is higher than non farmer/fisher group.

A Study on the Isolative determination of Smithion and Malathion in the Human Blood by Gas Chromatography (Gas Chromatography에 의한 인체혈액중에서 스미치온 및 마라치온의 분리정량에 관한 연구)

  • This experiment was carried out to determine the amount of organophosphorous pesticides accumulated in farmer's blood during the farming season. The Blood had been collected for about 5ml from farmer's, and extraction was purified on a Avicel/Darco G-Co (1:10) column and determined by Gas Chromatography using AFID supported on 2% EGA. The Gas chromatographic detection yielded recoveries from the blood of 88% for smithion 94% for malathion. The amount of average contamination shows 0.045ppm for smithion. 0.054ppm for malathion.

  • In this study we tried to give a decision on propriety of working conditions, to present ideas on reducing work loads. and to grope for efficiency of agricultural works. For this we examined the actual conditions of working environment, farmer's clothes, working posture, working methods, working time, resting state, fatigue recovery methods during cultivating lettuce in the winter greenhouse. And Ive improved harmful factors that affect farmer's health by considering results of previous study and farmer's subjective sensation. And we measured, compared, and analyzed the farmer's work loads before and after improvement. The results of this study are as follows ; 1. According to examine the actual conditions of cultivating lettuce in the winter greenhouse, farmers have experienced physical and mental chronic fatigue on the basis of the hot and humid crops-centered working environment, the rough ground condition, inconsistent arrangement of working stand and sorter, heavy-weared habits. and unsuitable working posture. 2. When we improved harmful factors that affect farmer's health, conformed the positive effects on important work efficiency index such as heart rate, electromyovolume, body temperature, and microclimate inside clothing and work loads were decreased by improving the hot and humid working environment, eliminating the hillock and obstacles of working path. deliver way, arranging the working stand and sorter consistantly, decreasing the clothing weight, improving the working postures and methods as using assistant appliances, alloting the working time and sequence effectively and presenting the light gymnastic exercises and rest for fatigue restoration.

Estimating Demand Functions of Tractor, Combine and Rice Transplanter (트랙터, 콤바인, 이앙기의 수요 함수 추정)

  • Using a multi-variable linear regression technique and SUR(seemingly unrelated regression) model, the demand functions of tractor, combine and rice transplanter were estimated. The demand was regarded as an annual supply of each machine and modeled as a function of 11 independent variables which reflect the actual farmer's income, actual prices of farm machines, previous supply, previous stock, actual amount of available subsidy, actual amount of available loan, arable land, import of farm machines and rice price. The actual amount of available loan affects most significantly the demand functions. The actual farmer's income, actual farmer's asset, loan coverage, and rice price affect the demand positively while prices of farm machines and import negatively. The annual demands of tractor, combine and rice transplanter estimated using the demand functions were also presented over the next 4 years.
