In the early phases of the product life cycle, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is recently used to support the decision-making for the product concepts, and the best alternative can be selected based on its estimated LCA and benefits. Both the lack of detailed information and time for a full LCA for a various range of design concepts need a new approach for the environmental analysis. This paper explores a new approximate LCA methodology for the product concepts by grouping products according to their environmental characteristics and by mapping product attributes into environmental impact driver (EID) index. The relationship is statistically verified by exploring the correlation between total impact indicator and energy impact category. Then, a neural network approach is developed to predict an approximate LCA of grouping products in conceptual design. Trained learning algorithms for the known characteristics of existing products will quickly give the result of LCA for newly designed products. The training is generalized by using product attributes for an EID in a group as well as another product attributes for the other EIDs in other groups. The neural network model with back propagation algorithm is used, and the results are compared with those of multiple regression analysis. The proposed approach does not replace the full LCA but it would give some useful guidelines for the design of environmentally conscious products in conceptual design phase.

Microglia have multiple functions in regulating homeostasis of the central nervous system. Microglia cells have been implicated as active contributors to neuron damage in neurodegenerative disorders. In this study, medicinal plant extracts (MPEs) were used to evaluate the cell-death induction effect in microglia BV-2 cells. Among 35 MPEs tested in this study, 4 MPEs showed less than a 30% cell survival after 24 hours of incubation. These were Foeniculi Fructus, Forsythiae Fructus, Zingiberis Rhizoma and Hedera Rhombea. The concentration showed that 50% cell death ($IC_{50}$) occurred with 33, 83, 67 Ed highlight: Please confirm wording, and $81{\mu}/ml$, respectively. For further study, we chose Zingiberis Rhizoma (ZR) which showed a reasonably low $IC_{50}$ value and an induction of cell death in a relatively narrow range. Western blot analysis showed that ZR-treated cells showed activation of caspase-3 and cleavage of PARP Ed highlight: When an acronym is first presented it needs to be spelled out in both dose- and time-dependent manners. However, the level of Bcl-2 and Bax were not changed by ZR-treatment in BV-2 cells. These results suggest that ZR-induced apoptosis in BV-2 cells occured through caspase-3 activation. The results also suggested that ZR may be useful in developing treatments for neurodegenerative diseases.

Two mannitol producing lactic acid bacteria were isolated from pa (green onion)- kimchi, identified and named as Leuconostoc mesenteroides SKP 88 and Leuconostoc citreum SKP 92, respectively. Both isolates grew well at 25-30℃, initial pH 6-8, and 3% and lower NaCl concentration. Both isolates converted fructose into mannitol efficiently when grown on MRS broth containing fructose and glucose. Glucose was used as a carbon source and fructose was used as a precursor for mannitol. Mannitol yields were the highest in MRS broth with 3% fructose and 2% glucose. Shine muscat juice fermentation was done using each isolate as a starter. As fermentation progressed, decrease in pH and increases in titratable acidity and viable counts were observed. L. mesenteroides SKP 88 showed better mannitol conversion ability than L. citreum SKP 92, and shine muscat juice fermented with L. mesenteroides SKP 88 showed the mannitol production of 41.6 g/l at 48 h, and juice fermented with L. citreum SKP 92 showed 23.4 g/l at the same time. Yogurt fermentations showed similar patterns, and yogurt fermented with L. mesenteroides SKP 88 showed the mannitol production of 15.13 g/l. These results showed that both strains are useful as starters for healthy fermented foods with reduced fructose contents.
We investigated the optimal conditions for keratinase production by feather-degrading Pseudomonas geniculata H10 using one variable at a time (OVT) method. The optimal medium composition and cultural condition for keratinase production were determined to be glucose 0.15% (w/v), beef extract 0.08% (w/v), $KH_2PO_4$ 0.12% (w/v), $K_2HPO_4$ 0.02% (w/v), NaCl 0.07% (w/v), $MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$ 0.03%, $MgCl_2{\cdot}6H_2O$ 0.04% along with initial pH 10 at 200 rpm and $25^{\circ}C$, respectively. The production yield of keratinase was 31.6 U/ml in an optimal condition, showing 4.6-fold higher than that in basal medium. The strain H10 also showed plant growth promoting activities. This strain had ammonification activity and produced indoleacetic acid (IAA), siderophore and a variety of hydrolytic enzymes such as protease, lipase and chitinase. Therefore, this study showed that P. geniculata H10 could be not only used to upgrade the nutritional value of feather wastes but also useful in situ biodegradation of feather wastes. Moreover, it is also a potential candidate for the development of biofertilizing agent applicable to crop plant soil.
Universal Learning Network(U.L.N.), which can model and control the large scale complicated systems naturally, consists of nonlinearly operated nodes and multi-branches that may have arbitrary time delays including zero or minus ones. Therefore, U.L.N. can be applied to many kinds of systems which are difficult to be expressed by ordinary first order difference equations with one sampling time delay. It has been already reported that learning algorithm of parameter variables in U.L.N. by forward and backward propagation is useful for modeling, managing and controlling of the large scale complicated systems such as industrial plants, economic, social and life phenomena. But, in the previous learning algorithm of U.L.N., time delays between the nodes were fixed, in other words, criterion function of U.L.N. was improved by adjusting only parameter variables. In this paper, a new learning algorithm is proposed, where not only parameter variables but also time delays between the nodes can be adjusted. Because time delays are integral numbers, adjustment of time delays can be carried out by a kind of random search procedure which executes intensified and diversified search in a single framework.

In order to extend the life time of building and civil infra-structure, nowadays, patch type fibrous composite materials are widely used. Retrofitted concrete columns and beams gain the stiffness and strength, but they lose toughness and show brittle failure. Usually, the cracks of concrete structures are visible with naked eyes and the status of the structure in the life cycle is estimated with visible inspection. After retrofitting of the structure, crack visibility is blocked by retrofitted composite materials. Therefore, structural monitoring after retrofitting is indispensible and self diagnosis method with optical fiber sensor is very useful. In this paper, We try to detect peel out effect and find the strain difference between main structure and retrofitting patch material when they separate each other.
The common accelerated life test(ALT) consists of test methods applying a constant stress, higher than the use condition stress, to items. There we, however, situations for which a progressive stress ALT, in which the stress on a test item is continuously increased with time, Is more convenient to perform testing and simpler in analyzing data than a constant stress ALT. When a product under constant stress s follows a Weibull distribution with parameters $\theta$(5) and $\beta$, maximum likelihood(ML) estimators of parameters involved in the model are obtained and their asymptotic distributions are derived under stress bounded ramp tests in which the stress is increased linearly from use condition stress to the stress upper bound. The optimum test plans are also found which minimize the asymptotic variance of the ML estimator of the log mean life at design constant stress. For selected values of the design parameters, tables useful for finding optimal test plans are given. The effect of the pre-estimates of design parameters is studied.

In order to extend the life time of building and civil infra-structure, nowadays, patch type carbon sheets are widely used as repairing meterials. Repaired concrete columns and beams with carbon sheets gain their stiffness and strength, but they lose toughness and show brittle failure behaviors. Usually, the cracks of concrete structures are visible with naked eyes and the status of the structure in the life cycle is estimated with visible inspection. After repairing of the structure, crack visibility is blocked by repaired carbon sheets. Therefore, structural monitoring after repairing is indispensible and self diagnosis method with optical fiber sensor is very useful. In this paper, peel-out effects is detected with optical fiber sensors and the strain difference between main structure and repaired carbon sheets when they separate each other.
This study was conducted to investigate the optimal condition of the extraction of red pepper oleoresin. The yield of oleoresin form red pepper was 24~28% when it was extracted by ethanol and methanol. and 8~10% by acetone, ethylene dichloride and n-hexane. But more than 60% of portion in alcohol extracts were moisture and sugars. Capsaicin and pigment were extracted more than 70% of those in red pepper when it was extracted by ethylene dichloride Those useful components were extracted most efficiently by mixed solvents of ethanol and ethylene dichloride at the ratio of 50:150. other extracting conditions were investigated in this studies, such as optimal extraction time was more than 3 hours, temperature was 55$^{\circ}C$ and particle size was finer than 250 mesh
