  • Two series of membranes have been prepared by postcrosslinking highly syndiotactic and isotactic poly (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate), P(HEMA). The crosslinker used was hexamethylene diisocyante (HMDIC). The distribution coefficients (K$_{D2}$) of the model solutes such as urea (and thiourea), their derivatives, homologous alcohol series and amide sreies in water-swollen tactic P(HEMA) membranes at $25^{\circ}C$ were mesaured. In addition, the concentration effects of acetamide and butyramid were also measured. On the basis of hydrophobic interaction and the structural factors of tactic P(HEMA) membranes, the hydrophobic adsorption of the solutes in the polymer matrix were discussed. The results showed that the more hydrphobic the solute is, the higher the $K_{D2}$ value is. And the polymer conformation also affects the distribution of solvents.

  • Four Thai - rumen fistulated male swamp buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis), about four years old with $400{\pm}20kg$ liveweight, were randomly assigned according to a $4{\times}4$ Latin square design to receive dietary treatments. The treatments were: ground corn cob (GCC) replacement for cassava chip (CC) in concentrate at 0% (T1); GCC replacement at 33% (T2); GCC replacement at 67% (T3); and GCC replacement at 100% (T4), respectively. During the experiment, concentrate was offered at 0.5% BW while 5% urea-treated rice straw was given at ad libitum. The result revealed that there was no effect of GCC replacement on DMI among treatments. In addition, digestibilities of DM, OM and CP were not different while aNDF linearly increased with an increasing level of GCC replacement. However, GCC replacement did not affect rumen fermentation such as ruminal pH, $NH_3$-N and VFA concentration; except C3 proportion which was the highest at 33% replacement while the lowest was at 100% replacement. All replacements of GCC resulted in similar protozoal and bacterial populations and microbial protein synthesis (MPS). Purine derivatives (PD) concentration in urine and PD to creatinine (PDC) index were varied with time of urination and among treatments at 0 to 8 and 8 to 16 h post feeding and higher values were shown among the GCC replacement groups. However at 16 to 24 h-post feeding, it was untraceable. In addition, creatinine concentration was similar among all treatments at every sampling time. Based on the above results, GCC can be used as an energy source for swamp buffalo fed with rice straw. Spot sampling of urine can be used for purine derivatives determination.

  • The purpose of this study is the development of the simple and precise sampling and analysis method of methyl isocyanate(MIC) in the work place as their secondary aliphatic amine derivatives by gas chromatography with flame ionization detector. The urea derivatives are quantitatively and simultaneously derived from MIC with secondary aliphatic amines such as dipropylamine(DPA), dibutylamine(DBA), and dipentylamine (DAA) in methylene chloride. The method is based on sampling glass tube in XAD-2 resin which is coated with secondary aliphatic amines. The samples are desorbed by $2m{\ell}$ methylene chloride and analysed using gas chromatography with flame ionization detector(GC/FID). In the results, the detection limit of the overall procedure and reliable quantity are $0.020-0.027{\mu}g$($1.347-1.740{\mu}g/m^3$(0.529-0.684 ppb) based on a 15 L air volume) MIC per sample. The average desorption efficiencies are 97.96 - 101.23 %. The results of versus storage time are high and stable recovery rates.

  • Malaria is one of the most widespread infectious diseases of tropical countries with an estimated 207 million cases globally. In India, there are endemic pockets of this disease, including Aligarh. Hundreds of Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax cases with severe pathological conditions are recorded every year in this district. The aim of this study is to find out changes in liver enzymes and kidney markers. Specific diagnosis for P. falciparum and P. vivax was made by microscopic examination of Giemsa stained slides. Clinical symptoms were observed in both of these infections. Liver enzymes, such as AST, ALT, and ALP, and kidney function markers, such as creatinine and urea, were estimated by standard biochemical techniques. In Aligarh district, P. vivax, P. falciparum, and mixed infections were 64%, 34%, and 2%, respectively. In case of P. falciparum infection, the incidences of anemia, splenomegaly, renal failure, jaundice, and neurological sequelae were higher compared to those in P. vivax infection. Recrudescence and relapse rates were 18% and 20% in P. falciparum and P. vivax infections, respectively. Liver dysfunctions and renal failures were more common in P. falciparum patients, particularly in elderly patients. Artesunate derivatives must, therefore, be introduced for the treatment of P. falciparum as they resist to chloroquine as well as sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine combinations.

  • Inefficient rumen microbial fermentation is a major factor limiting intake of low quality roughage in ruminants. In this study, the effect of energy supplementation on rumen microbial fermentation, absorption of balanced digestion products and voluntary feed intake in sheep was investigated. A basal diet of a urea-treated mixture of wheaten chaff and barley straw (3:1 DM) containing 22.2 g N/kg DM was used. Four Merino-cross wethers weighing $45{\pm}4.38\;kg$ and fitted with permanent rumen and abomasal cannulae were allocated to four treatments in a $4{\times}4$ Latin square design. The dietary treatments were basal diet ($E_0$), or basal diet supplemented with sucrose (112.5 g/d) administered to the animals intra-ruminally ($E_R$), abomasally ($E_A$), or through both routes (50:50) ($E_{RA}$). Feed intake (basal and dietary) was increased (p<0.05) by sucrose supplementation through the rumen ($E_R$) or abomasum ($E_A$). However, there was no difference (p>0.05) in intake between animals on the control diet and those supplemented with sucrose through both intraruminal and abomasal routes ($E_{RA}$). The digestibility of DM and OM was highest in $E_R$ and $E_A$ supplemented animals. Although the rumen pH was reduced (p<0.001) in animals supplemented with sucrose entirely intra-ruminally ($E_R$), the in sacco degradation of barley straw in the rumen was not adversely affected (p>0.05). Intra-ruminal sucrose supplementation resulted in a higher concentration of total VFA, acetate and butyrate, while the pattern of fermentation showed a higher propionate: acetate ratio. Intra-ruminal supplementation also increased (p<0.05) the glucogenic potential (G/E) of the absorbed VFA. However, there was no difference (p>0.05) in microbial protein production between the four dietary treatments. Protozoa numbers were increased (p<0.05) by intra-ruminal supplementation of sucrose.

  • For the purpose of a development of new agrochemical fungicides, new compound 4 in which 1,3-thiazoline scaffold as well as urea moiety in the structure was designed through molecular modification of lead compound, 2-imino-1,3-thiazone based on isosterism. The reaction of N-alkylthiourea 5 and bromoacetonitrile in ethanol gave 2,4-diimino-1,3-thiazolidine hydrobromide 6 regioselectively, which was treated with isocyanates gave the corresponding 8 which is tautomer of 4. Antifungal screening (in vivo) of the synthesized compound 8 against typical plant diseases, which include rice blast, rice sheath blight, cucumber gray mold, tomato late blight, wheat leaf rust, and barley powdery mildew, was carried out. Antifungal activities against rice blast of the compound 8 were weaker than those of 2-phenylimino-1,3-thiazoline 1. Some compounds showed weak antifungal activities against wheat leaf rust.

  • The new six herbicidal N-[(pyrimidin-2-yl)aminocarbonyl]-2-substituted-6-(1-hydroxy-2-fluoroethyl)benzenesulfonamide derivatives(S) were synthesized and rate constants for the hydrolysis of thier in the range of pH $1.0{\sim}10.0$ have been studied in 15%(v/v) aqueous acetonitrile solution at $45^{\circ}C$. From the basis of the results, pH-effect, solvent effect, ortho-substituent effect, thermodynamic parameters(${\Delta}H^{\neq}$ & ${\Delta}S^{\neq}$), pKa constant(4.80), rate equation, analysis of hydrolysis products(2-(1-hydroxy-2-fluoroethyl)benzenesulfonamide & 4,6-dimethoxyaminopyrimidine), it may be concluded that the general acid catalyzed hydrolysis through $A-S_E2$ mechanism and specific acid catalyzed hydrolysis through A-2 type(or $A_{AC}2$) mechanism proceeds via conjugate acid($SH^+$) and tetrahedral intermediate(I) below pH 8.0, whereas, above pH 9.0, the general base catalyzed hydrolysis by water molecules(B) through $(E_1)_{anion}$ mechanism proceeds via conjugate base(CB). In the range between $pH\;7.0{\sim}pH\;9.0$, these two reactions occur competitively.

The urea intermediates, N-(2-chloroethyl) carbamoyl-3.alpha.-amino-5.alpha.-cholestane (13), N-methylcarbamoyl-$3{\alpha}-amino-5{\alpha}-cholestane$ (14), N-(2-chloroethyl) carbamoyl-$3{\beta}-amino-5{\alpha}-cholestane (11) and N-methyl-$3{\beta}-amino-5{\alpha}$-cholestane (12) were prepared by the treatment of each isomers ($3{\alpha}$-amino-and $3{\beta}-amino-5{\alpha}$-cholestane) with alkyl isocyanates in anhydrous $CHCl_{3}$, and the corresponding nitrosoureas, 7-10 were obtained by the nitrosation of the ureas, 11-14, with AcOH (or HCOOH)/$NaNO_{2}$ in ice-cold condition. The inhibitory activity of the nitrosoureas, 7-10, and their intermediates, 12-14 towards the growth of L1210 murine leukemia cells, were examined. Among them, the compounds 9 and 10 exhibited high activity having $ED_{50}$ to be 5.5g/ml and 6.1g/ml, respectively.

  • Objective: An experiment was conducted to assess the effect of dragon fruit peel pellet (DFPP) as a rumen enhancer of dry matter consumption, nutrient digestibilities, ruminal ecology, microbial protein synthesis and rumimal methane production in Holstein crossbred bulls. Methods: Four animals, with an average live-weight of 200±20 kg were randomly assigned in a 4×4 Latin square design to investigate the influence of DFPP supplementation. There were four different dietary treatments: without DFPP, and with 200, 300, and 400 g/h/d, respectively. Results: Results revealed that dry matter consumption of total intake, rice straw and concentrate were not significantly different among treatments (p>0.05). It was also found that ruminal pH was not different among treatments (p>0.05), whilst protozoal group was reduced when DFPP increased (p<0.01). Blood urea nitrogen and NH3-N concentrations were increased at 400 g of DFPP supplementation (p<0.01). Additionally, volatile fatty acid production of propionate was significantly enhanced by the DFPP supplementation (p<0.05), while production of methane was consequently decreased (p<0.05). Furthermore, microbial protein synthesis and urinary purine derivatives were remarkably increased especially at 400 g of DFPP supplementation (p<0.05). Conclusion: Plant secondary compounds or phytonutrients (PTN) containing saponins (SP) and condensed tannins (CT) have been reported to influence rumen fermentation. DFPP contains both CT and SP as a PTN. The addition of 400 g of DFPP resulted in improved rumen fermentation end-products especially propionate (C3) and microbial protein synthesis. Therefore, DFPP is a promising rumen enhancer and indicated a significant potential of DFPP as feedstuff for ruminant feed to mitigate rumen methane production.
