  • Foundation systems in urban sites are often necessary to be constructed with little vibrations and displacements to surroundings. In order to assess applicability of a new foundation system for urban sites based on soil-cement mixing technique, vibrations and displacements induced by soil-cement construction process is evaluated. Soil-cement columns were constructed to reinforce soft ground near an old masonry wall in an urban redevelopment site, and the vibrations and displacements of the old masonry wall during construction were measured. Results indicate that the vibrations and displacements induced by soil-cement construction were little and not critical to the stability of the masonry wall.

  • In this paper development artificial neural networks (ANN) for preliminary design and prediction of urban tunnelling and deep excavation-induced ground settlement was presented. In order to form training and validation data sets for the ANN development, field design and measured data were collected for various tunnelling and deep-excavation sites. The field data were then used as a database for the ANN training. The developed ANN was validated against a testing set and the unused field data in terms of statistical parameters such as R2, RMSE, and MAE. The practical use of ANN was demonstrated by applying the developed ANN to hypothetical conditions. It was shown that the developed ANN can be effectively used as a tool for preliminary excavation design and ground settlement prediction for urban excavation problems.

  • Population of urban areas is rapidly increased due to urbanization. This situation leads to lack of surface space. So, underground space has been developed for resolving the problem of congested urban areas. Many studies have researched for this situation. However, previous studies mainly focused on behaviour of structures. Researches about behaviour of soil are lacked. For this reason, this study has investigated interactive behaviour between embedded pile and its surrounding ground due to tunnelling. Soil deformation is observed by the close range photogrammetric method and image processing in the model test. These data are compared with numerical analysis.

  • The west express way is notorious for extremely heavy traffic area in the west of Seoul, South Korea. Hence, the city government recently initiated a new underground BTO (Build-Transfer-Operate) road project to solve traffic congestion and a high construction cost. The proposed underground express road being designed is the first double-level tunnel ever designed in South Korea and using Conventional tunnelling method (NATM). A total length of tunnel for light vehicles is 10.91km long including both open cut structures and concrete lining with middle-deck in bored tunnel. There are also 4 ventilation shafts for ventilation and evacuation on emergency. Many design issues had been aroused during the preliminary design phase and detail design phase is currently going on. This paper discusses design focuses including excavation methods, ground water issues, a deck slab installation, and a construction cost etc. for the double level road tunnel design of urban area.

  • In tunnelling by NATM convergence data are most Importantly to ascertain the safety of tunnel. Therefore, a reliable method is required that can predict ultimate displacements by using earler displacement data. Displacement forecasting method is classified into statistical method and functional regression method. Convergence data measured in Seoul subway 5~45 site during '92.5 ~ '92.12 were analyzed by above said two methods. The analysis results of convergence data show that the functional regression method is more relieable in completely weathered rock, but the statistical method in slightly wearhred rock.

  • The NATM(New Austrian Tunnelling Method) has been used for tunnelling since 1980's. But Collapses of tunnel under construction take place frequently, especially at urban areas because of adjacent buildings, underground conduits and traffic loads. This paper is a case study on the reinforcement method of subway tunnel at urban areas. In this study, ground inspection, geological investigation, laboratory test and numerical analysis by means of FDM program were carried out. The tunnel excavation was stopped because of over excessive brake of tunnel crown and shotcrete was installed to prevent deformation of adjacent ground as the temporary method. From the result of field survey and geological investigation, it is found that the soft weathered soil was distributed to the ground of tunnel invert unlike original investigation. The results of the analysis and the study show that the SGR(Space Grouting Rocket) method and Umbrella method can be applied for the stability of tunnel excavation and in addition the reinforcement of concrete lining is required for long-term stability of tunnel.

  • A frame slab method has been proved as a possible and profitable construction solution for the urban tunnels with very shallow overburden and the excavation from the surface Is strictly limited. Since this method allows only a small amount of construction activities in the ground surface, the disturbances to the public and the surface traffic can be drastically reduced compared with the ordinary cut-and-cover method. The construction sequences of the method and the some of critical cautions needed are described in detail. Also a comprehensive numerical analysis including 2-D and 3-D analysis have been performed to verify the stability of the ground during the construction. It is revealed from this study that the frame slab method can be a quite successful solution for the shallow overburden tunnelling in urban area.

  • A study of interactive ground behaviour due to tunnelling adjacent to existing piles has not been recognized well for the most geotechnical engineers so far. Because this is a very sophisticated boundary condition problem. In this study, therefore, the author has conducted both the laboratory model test and finite element analysis (FEA) to figure out such a complicated ground behaviour related to shear strain formations. Based on the model testing and FEA results, a boundary line which divides into two distinctive shear strain formations in relation to the locations of end-bearing pile tips was proposed. The author believes that the proposed boundary line may be helpful for planning the appropriate tunnel positions for avoiding damage of buildings which supported by piled-foundations in urban areas.

  • Most of the urban tunnels in Korea, which are represented by the 1st to 3rd subways, use the drainage tunnel by NATM. Recently, when a construction project that actively utilizes large-scale urban space is promoted, negative effects that do not conform to the existing empirical rules of urban tunnels may occur. In particular, there is a high possibility that groundwater fluctuations and hydrodynamic behavior will occur owing to the practice of tunnel technology in Korea, which has mainly applied the drainage tunnel. In order to solve the problem of the drainage tunnel, attempts are being made to control groundwater fluctuations. For this, the establishment of tunnel groundwater management standard concept and the analysis of the tunnel hydraulic behavior were performed. To prevent the problem of groundwater fluctuations caused by the construction of large-scale tunnels in urban areas, it was suggested that the conceptual transformation of the empirical technical practice, which is applied only in the underground safety impact assessment stage, to the direction of controlling the inflow in the tunnel, is required. And the relationship between the groundwater level and the inflow of the tunnel required for setting the allowable inflow when planning the tunnel was derived. The introduction of a tunnel groundwater management concept is expected to help solve problems such as groundwater fluctuations, ground settlement, depletion of groundwater resources, and decline of maintenance performance in various urban deep tunnel construction projects to be promoted in the future.
