  • The purpose of this research is to minimize the learning deficiency on science subject in changeover from the 7th education curriculum to the next curriculum which was noticed in 2007. We investigated the contents overlapped or omitted in science contents organization between the two curriculums; moved contents to upper or lower grade, deleted contents, enlarged contents and reduced contents. Also we found that the deficiency will be occurred for the students who entered school in 2006 and 2007 in elementary school. To minimize the learning deficiency in the changeover, we must consider the following points. (1) We need to promote the teachers' comprehension about the learning deficiency and supplementary instruction through the teacher training program before carrying out the next curriculum. (2) We must add the measures minimizing the learning deficiency to the teachers' guide and resources which are used in encouragement of learning and teachers' training. (3) We must develop the instructing materials to supplement the learning deficiency for the students who entered school in 2006 and 2007. As practicing above points, we will be able to reduce time loss in studying and teaching the same contents and to supplement the omitted contents.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the dietary factors associated with characteristics of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in upper-grade elementary school students. The study subjects were 397 students, and 52% of total study subjects were boys. The risk for developing ADHD was assessed by using a DSM-IV questionnaire. Boy's ADHD score was higher than that of girls (p<0.001). Subjects were divided into two groups according to the median of the ADHD score in boys and girls. The high ADHD score group showed higher frequency of skipping breakfast and a lower score for good dietary habits, as compared to the normal group. Further, the high ADHD score group showed higher frequency of processed food intake with lower frequency of vegetable intake, as compared to the normal group. These results suggest that undesirable eating habits and frequent intake of processed foods may be associated with higher risk of developing ADHD in elementary school students.

  • Purpose: This study was done to identify perceived body image, intentional caloric restriction and physical manifestations of unbalanced nutrition according to the Body Mass Index (BMI) in elementary school students. Methods: The research design was a cross-sectional descriptive study. Data collection was done by using a structured questionnaire that consisted of 34 items. Participants were 151 students in 5th and 6th grades of elementary schools in Gangwon province. Frequency and percentage, one-way ANOVA, and $\chi^2$-test with SPSS WIN 12.0 were used to analyze the data. Results: In elementary school students, over-weight/obesity and normal weight groups reported that they would be satisfied with a thinner body image compared to the present image. The score for intentional caloric restriction was significantly higher in the over-weight/obesity group than in the under-weight group. In physical manifestations of unbalanced nutrition, students in the under-weight group frequently were pale and had dry skin, whereas the over-weight/obesity group reported frequent upper respiratory symptoms. Conclusion: The results suggest that elementary school students need to develop the perception of an adequate body image and to avoid inadequate caloric intake if promotion of the child's growth and development is to be without physical manifestations of unbalanced nutrition.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of cognitive developmental stages on library behaviors, reading tendency and perception on the library of the elementary students. For this study, a cognitive development tests and a questionnaire survey was conducted with students in their fourth and sixth grades in three elementary schools in Seoul and statistical analysis was carried out with the survey data. As a result, sixth grade students with the higher cognitive development had more requests for library information services than fourth grade students did. However, sixth grade students use library less and preferred to focus on the books for fun and personal interests, comparing with the fourth grade students. Their high level of cognitive development did not always have a positive effect on library behaviors and reading tendency. In addition, perception on the library of sixth grade students was lower than that of fourth grade students and it was influenced by library behaviors and reading tendency. It was also influenced positively by frequent use of library, active support by librarians and reading curriculum-related books. Based on the analysis, it is suggested that school library service should be provided based on the development stage of the upper grades of elementary students.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze concretely and minutely a primary factor of deciding attitude of learning mathematics of elementary school students, grope a solution for negative attitude of learning mathematics with researching a difference between major factors by achievement in mathematics, and examine a suggestion in forming positive attitude of learning mathematics. The results of this study is as follows. First, elementary school students decided whether they liked or disliked mathematics, depending on not only characteristics of mathematics, but also teacher's teaching mathematics with interest and fun, or teacher's teaching tediously and difficultly. Second, negative attitude toward mathematics exam of elementary school students was influenced by parents' meddling for exam and negative attitude toward result of exam more than uneasiness by exam itself. Third, as private education for elementary school students becomes more popular, the learning mathematics out of school can be an important factor to decide attitude of learning mathematics of students on several sides such as teacher, teaching method, method of presenting task, and so on as much as mathematics class in school, and characteristics of mathematics. Fourth, students demanded silent and concentrative atmosphere in studying to have positive attitude of learning mathematics. Fifth, as the result of examining major factors that form attitude of teaming mathematics of groups by achievement in mathematics, there was considerable difference in each group. Students in a group of ‘upper’ and ‘lower’ disliked parents' meddling and rebuke, but it didn't change greatly their attitude toward mathematics exam. However a group of ‘middle’ showed the greatest uneasiness toward an exam, and they reacted sensitively to parent's rebuke, scolding, learning environment, and so on.

  • Matter is a basic concept that students should understand during their science classes. However, many difficulties are associated with understanding the concepts of matter due to its abstraction. In this study, the elementary school students' understanding of the concept of matter and the examples of matter and non-matter are investigated and analyzed by grade. The subjects of this study were 418 students from third grade to sixth grade. The survey was conducted using a free-response questionnaire comprising three questions. The results are as follows. First, the elementary school students' conceptions of matter were "materials that make up objects," "what can be seen and touched," and "solid, liquid, and gas." As the grade increased, the explanations for a material decreased and the explanations for the state of matter increased. Furthermore, only few students explained matter in terms of mass and volume. Second, solids were the most common examples of matter presented by the students, and liquids and gases were included in the upper grades. However, there were many cases in the upper grades where students were unable to distinguish between objects and matter. Third, non-matter was properly presented by the 6th graders as compared to the other graders, and in many cases, objects, liquids, and gases were mentioned as non-matter. Fourth, it was found that the students' conceptions of matter influenced the examples of matter and non-matter that they presented.

  • This study researched the concepts that elementary school students have after having learned volcano and earthquake. The reacher collected and adjusted the journals related to this study, and sampled the concepts included in Chap. One "Moving Earth", the first term of the elementary school sixth year. The students' descriptive responses were analyzed after subjective questions on the basis of above were developed and put into. After the contents described in the answer sheets were categorized by key words and the types of concept were made out by qualitative analysis, it was showed what was differences between the sexual, regional and achievement levels. The results of this study were as follows; first, though the types of concept about volcano and earthquake were found variably, it was showed that wrong preconception was not corrected, especially the exact understanding about terms not attained to, which led to the trouble in conceptual readjustment of students. Second, though the response rate about the types of scientific concept was found high that volcano was made out of explosion and eruption of magma and lava, there were also children who described not the interior factor of globe but the surface factor. Third, according to the results divided into the interior factor of globe and the surface factor and analyzed about earthquake, there were a great number of children who responded as the surface factor though most of the students responded to the interior factor of globe. Fourth, through some types of concept, it was found that the formation of concept was much influenced by experience of children's life, curriculum, and the method of study. Fifth, In the most test question, the scientific concept was found that boys were higher than girls in the distinction of sex, the children of cities than those of town and island, and the upper group than the lower group in the achievement levels.

  • In this paper, implications for future curriculum compilation were sought by analyzing the process and results of compiling books for elementary school mathematics textbooks government published according to the 2015 revised curriculum. The 2015 revised elementary mathematics textbooks government published was operated with a systematic compilation system so that academia and school field experts across the country could demonstrate their expertise. As improvements in content, the unit and time to strengthen basic computational skills were increased, and the mathematical concept and principle introduction method and algorithm presentation method were improved, and the internal connection between contents was strengthened. The learning period was adjusted, such as moving and arranging contents that are difficult for students to understand to the upper semester or the upper grade. In the 1st and 2nd graders, the amount of reading was drastically reduced to suit the students' level of Korean, and sentences and vocabulary were improved, and instructions were briefly revised. As for editing and design improvements, illustrations of each unit's introduction and contextual pictures were presented in detail, and the characters in the textbook were consistently presented across all grades, giving children characters a role to actively participate in learning in the textbook. In the process of compiling, the media, the National Assembly, and civic groups raised opinions that sentences and vocabulary in first-year textbooks are more difficult than students' level of Hangeul education, that reducing textbooks makes it difficult for students to understand. Accordingly, efforts to improve textbook compilation and the results were viewed. Through the overall analysis as above, for future compilation of state-authored textbooks and certified textbooks, a plan to improve textbook compilation for students and teachers and a plan to operate compilation was proposed.
