Recent advances in the speed of multi-rate wireless local area networks (WLANs) and the proliferation of WLAN devices have made rate adaptive, opportunistic scheduling critical for throughput optimization. As WLAN traffic evolves to be more symmetric due to the emerging new applications such as VoWLAN, collaborative download, and peer-to-peer file sharing, opportunistic scheduling at the downlink becomes insufficient for optimized utilization of the single shared wireless channel. However, opportunistic scheduling on the uplink of a WLAN is challenging because wireless channel condition is dynamic and asymmetric. Each transmitting client has to probe the access point to maintain the updated channel conditions at the access point. Moreover, the scheduling decisions must be coordinated at all clients for consistency. This paper presents JUDS, a joint uplink/downlink opportunistic scheduling for WLANs. Through synergistic integration of both the uplink and the downlink scheduling, JUDS maximizes channel diversity at significantly reduced scheduling overhead. It also enforces fair channel sharing between the downlink and uplink traffic. Through extensive QualNet simulations, we show that JUDS improves the overall throughput by up to 127% and achieves close-to-perfect fairness between uplink and downlink traffic.

This paper proposes a handover scheme using uplink and downlink signals in IEEE 802.16e systems. Exploiting the channel reciprocity in TDD systems, the proposed scheme triggers handover initiation process using uplink signal. In addition, it exploits the uplink and downlink hysteresis to determine the handover direction. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm with joint hysteresis reduces the outage probability by about 10% compared with the mobile assisted handover in IEEE 802.16e.

In this letter, an adaptive multi-antenna channel estimation scheme is proposed for uplink multiuser environments such as LTE-A systems to accurately estimate time-varying channels within an affordable complexity. It is confirmed that the proposed channel estimator can achieve accurate channel tracking performance even when various time-varying channel environments and traffic patterns are provided.

This paper describes playback downlink and telecommand uplink channel design performed for a transportable small-sized KOMPSAT(Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite) ground station. As a result of downlink channel design, required receiving performance was calculated from the threshold signal-to-noise ratio of playback signal and it was revealed that this performance can be guaranteed in 1.5 m ground station with 6.5 dB/K of G/T. For the uplink channel design, 40 dBW of EIRP was derived from the threshold signal-to-noise ratio of telecommand signal received at on-board receiver. The implemented small-sized ground station based on design was evaluated to be fully acceptable for KOMPSAT TT&C(Telemetry, Tracking and Command) system and playback downlink design without taking account of additional 3 dB system link margin was shown to be effective because it had provided constantly initial channel performance without any remarkable degradation over several years of tests with KOMPSAT and KOMPSAT-2, for both uplink and playback downlink in the elevation angle above $10^{\circ}$.
In this paper, we propose a codebook-based interference alignment (IA) scheme in the constant multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) interference channel especially for the uplink scenario. In our proposed scheme, we assume cooperation among base stations (BSs) through reliable backhaul links so that global channel knowledge is available for all BSs, which enables BS to compute he transmit precoder and inform its quantized index to the associated user via limited rate feedback link. We present an upper bound on the rate loss of the proposed scheme and derive the scaling law of the feedback load to maintain a constant rate loss relative to IA with perfect channel knowledge. Considering the impact of overhead due to training, cooperation, and feedback, we address the effective degrees of freedom (DOF) of the proposed scheme and derive the maximization of the effective DOF. From simulation results, we verify our analysis on the scaling law to preserve the multiplexing gain and confirm that the proposed scheme is more effective than the conventional IA scheme in terms of the effective DOF.

In time-varying multipath fading channels, orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) uplink systems suffer severe performance degradation caused by inter-channel interference (ICI). In this paper, we propose a hybrid interference cancellation (HIC) for suppressing the degradation effect of ICI. The proposed HIC can achieve both exact interference cancellation and low detection complexity through efficient combination of parallel detection and serial cancellation. Simulation results show that, as the effect of Doppler increases, the proposed HIC achieves bit error rate (BER) performance enhancement in compared with severe performance degradation of conventional OFDMA receivers. In addition, both the computational complexity and total detection time are reduced.
In this letter, we address the problem of resource allocation with efficiency and quality of service (QoS) support in uplink for a wireless CDMA network supporting real-time (RT) and non-realtime (NRT) communication services. For RT and NRT users, there are different QoS requirements. We introduce and describe a new scheme, namely, traffic aided uplink opportunistic scheduling (TAUOS). While guaranteeing the different QoS requirements, TAUOS exploits the channel condition to improve system throughput. In TAUOS, the cross-layer information, file size information, is used to improve fairness for NRT users. Extensive simulation results show that our scheme can achieve high system throughput in uplink wireless CDMA systems, while guaranteeing QoS requirements.

It is essential to develop an estimation and cancellation algorithm for feedback signals in designing the interference cancellation systems (ICS) as a solution to extending the coverage of the TDD LTE networks. Unlike the radio access of FDD LTE networks, TDD networks utilize the same frequency band in downlink and uplink for radio access. For this reason, downlink and uplink are repeated in time and thus the estimation of the feedback signals in uplink and downlink, respectively, is periodically paused to cause performance degradation. In this study, the reciprocity of downlink and uplink is examined through experiments and exploiting the same frequency band in uplink and downlink, an efficient channel estimation and elimination algorithm is proposed since the algorithm utilizes the same structure for both downlink and uplink.
The high-speed portable internet service will be served in Korea sooner or later. However, the scheduling method for the packets of various service classes has not been determined clearly yet. An effective packet scheduling for various service classes requiring different QoS is necessary to increase the efficiency of radio channels that are the limiting resource. This paper proposes an improved uplink scheduling method to accommodate more calls and enhance channel efficiency. Suggested scheduling method reflects different channel conditions considering terminal's location within a cell to increase the transmission rate and utility of the channels. According to our simulation results, our proposed scheduling method shows a good performance in the aspect of throughput and capacity of uplink channels.

For massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) circumstances with time division duplex (TDD) protocol, pilot contamination becomes one of main system performance bottlenecks. This paper proposes an uplink pilot sequence assignment to alleviate this problem for spatially correlated massive MIMO circumstances. Firstly, a single-cell TDD massive MIMO model with multiple terminals in the cell is established. Then a spatial correlation between two channel response vectors is established by the large-scale fading variables and the angle of arrival (AOA) span with an infinite number of base station (BS) antennas. With this spatially correlated channel model, the expression for the achievable system capacity is derived. To optimize the achievable system capacity, a problem regarding uplink pilot assignment is proposed. In view of the exponential complexity of the exhaustive search approach, a pilot assignment algorithm corresponding to the distinct channel AOA intervals is proposed to approach the optimization solution. In addition, simulation results prove that the main pilot assignment algorithm in this paper can obtain a noticeable performance gain with limited BS antennas.
