  • The standard of crop quality is required to promote the consumption and produce the high quality products. It will contribute the stability for processing products and the marketability of crops. Upland crop quality is considered to the three categories; the marketing value such as grain size, shape and appearance; the eating and processing value such as milling rate, dehulled ratio and kernel hardness; the nutritional value such as protein, lipid and isoflavone content. Even though many characters were analyzed for crop quality, effective method of evaluation to enhance the control of quality was not performed till now. Therefore, in the future, research in upland crop quality should emphasize to establish the standard evaluation method.

  • The purpose of this study is to calculate agricultural water demand as considering landuse plan of the farm land on the Saemangeum tidal land reclamation project. This study based on the farm landuse plan(2012) and considered some items which did not included previous work like prevention water for resalinization for paddy and upland and muli-purpose water for upland. This study showed that the agricultural water demand estimated $145.123Mm^3/yr$, which is needed as much $14.792Mm^3/yr$ as more water than previous work. The difference comes from the change of unit water demand. Water demand is possible to be changed if guidelines are improved and detailed design work is completed through further study. Especially, the more studies for prevention water for resalinization in a tidal reclaimed farmland and water demand for a horticulture are needed.

  • Analysis of data in the Official Soil Series Description showed the dominant texture of upland soils is SiL, of which available water range is 21.1% highest among textures. Analyses of data in the N, P, K Trials on Barley in 1964/65-1968/69, and N, P, K and Soil Improvement Trials on upland Crops in 1961-1969 were made to relate fertilizer response to the amount of rainfalls during the growing season. Correlation between nitrogen response and the amount of rainfalls was observed but not between P and K and the amount of rainfalls. Some of physical properties were discussed to seek feasible means for increasing available water.

  • Since 1970, herbicides have been widely used in the crop production, especially in paddy field in Korea. In 1978, both preemergence and postemergence type herbicides are applied in the approximately 70% of total paddy field and 15% of upland to control weeds. Most herbicides control annual weeds effectively, but perennials have been problems in the paddy field. Under upland conditions, effectiveness of herbicides varies depending on many environmental conditions (soil moisture, soil physical properties, temperature, etc.) as well as uniform application of appropriate amounts of herbicides. In Korea, many research works have been concentrated on the screening of new herbicides in terms of herbicide effectiveness and yield or phytotoxicity of crops, and especially on the paddy field. However, physiological aspects of herbicidal action in plant and interaction of herbicides with the environments have not been studied approximately. Therefore, researches on the uptake of herbicides and the influence of herbicides on the physiological phenomena such as photosynthesis, respiration, nutrient uptake etc., to control troublesome perennial weeds in the paddy field are needed in future. Also some researches are needed to improve effectiveness of herbicirdes under upland conditions.

  • In the marginal upland areas of East Java, Indonesia, ruminants provide farming households with tradable assets in addition to manure and draught power. Households are interested in acquiring ruminants at an early stage of household development. This paper discusses farmers' access to cattle via sharing arrangements. In these arrangements owners lend animals to other farmers in retum for a share of the offspring or the profits. Livestock owners only entrust cattle to households with prior experience in livestock keeping and sufficient labour. Details of the sharing contracts differ between villages. Changes in cattle numbers and ownership over time are attributed to patterns of the development of village agriculture and the economic development of farming households. Feed shortages in the dry season bring about short-term changes; cattle numbers decline and the proportion of households rearing shared cattle increases. The institution of sharing plays a major role in replenishing herds after periods of severe drought.

  • A model for estimating daily effective rainfall of upland crops was developed. The infiltration process was described by Green-Ampt infiltration model developed by Chu(1978). The model considers delayed surface ponding and surface detention storage under a uniform soil profile. The Green-Ampt parameters, that is, average hydraulic conductivity and average capillary pressure head on a sandy loam soil were determined from field experiment using Air-entry permeameter developed by Bouwer(1966). The model was verified by comparing measured and simulated surface runoff. The ratios of effective rainfall to total rainfall for red pepper, soybean, sesame and Chinese cabbage were evaluated using Borg's root growth model( 1986) respectively. The followings are a summary of this study results; 1.In a sandy loam soil average hydraulic conductivity was 3.28cm/hr and average capillary pressure head was 3.00cm. 2.The root growth of upland crops could be expressed by Borg's root growth model successively. 3.The measured and simulated surface runoff was agreed well with each other. 4.As the rainfall amount was increased, the ratio of effective rainfall to total rainfall was decreased exponentially till a certain growing period.

  • Spectral reflectance signatures of upland crops at OSMI bands were collected and evaluated for the feasibility of crop discrimination knowledge-based on crop calendar. Effective bands and their ratio values for discriminating corn from two other legumes were defined with OSMI equivalent bands and their ratio values. June 22 among measurements dates was the best date for corn discrimination from two other legumes, peanut and soybean, because all OSMI equivalent bands and their ratio values in June 22 were highly significant for corn separability. Phenological growth stage of a silage corn (rs510) could be estimated as a function of spectral reflectance signatures in vegetative stage. Five growth stage prediction models were generated by the SAS procedures REG and STEPWISE with OSMI equivalent bands and their ratio values in vegetative stage.

  • In order to find out the effect of low level of starch acetylation on physicochemical properties of potato starch, amylose content, digestibility of raw and gelatinized starch, thermal properties, pasting properties, and the swelling power of native and acetylated potato starches were measured. The amylose content was significantly lower in acetylated starch than in their counterpart native starches. Though a tendency in the decrease in digestibility of raw starch was observed with starch acetylation, acetylation did not alter the proportion of readily digestible starch (RDS), slowly digestible starch (SDS), and resistant starch (RS) of both raw and gelatinized potato starches. No clear increase in the swelling power was observed, however, the peak and onset gelatinization temperatures and the enthalpy required for starch gelatinization decreased with starch acetylation. Peak and breakdown viscosities were reduced due to acetylation of potato starch while final viscosity and set back were increased.

  • In the practice , ET was mainly estimated by Blaney-Criddle or FAO Penman method. But these methods were found to frequently overestimate ET. And calculation of effective rainfall by empirical formula is hardly to explain drop property and soil texture. Since 1990, FAO recommended the adoption of Penman-Moneteith combination method as a new standard for reference ET. Purpose of this study is establish new estimate method of upland crop requirements. We asopt P-M method to estimate ET and set up soil moisture balance equation to equation to calculate effective rainfall and irrigation water requirements. We expect that this new method rise efficiency to upland water management.

  • Naturally occurring soybean isoflavones are known to be influenced by various genetic and environmental conditions. Growth, yield, and isoflavone content were determined in four different cultivars of soybean grown under drained paddy and upland fields. Most of growth characteristics and yield components of four different soybean cultivars harvested in drained paddy field were greater than those in upland field, regardless of cultivar. By means of high performance liquid chromatography, total daidzein and genistein contents of soybean in drained paddy field were increased up to 40 and 35%, respectively, compared with those in drained paddy field. Besides isoflavone contents, the growth and yield of soybean were significantly affected by cultivar and field conditions, indicating the necessity of genetic program for soybean cultivars appropriate to drained paddy field conditions. In conclusion, converting paddy field into upland may effectively improve soybean cropping system, especially in terms of isoflavone increment under paddy field conditions.
