  • The positive branch confocal unstable resonator equipped with an intra-cavity beam splitter has been studied experimentally to achieve low beam divergence in the copper vapor laser. Output laser beams of 0.15 mrad divergence was achieved from the laser system with a 10 cm curvature convex mirror (M=30), and laser beams of 0.1 mrad was achieved for a 5 cm curvature convex mirror (M=60). The power density of the far-field beam from the M=60 resonator laser was 130 times higher than the case of the 2 mrad-operation with the plane-parallel resonator. We also observed the self-mode-locking from the unstable resonator laser pulses.

  • We have studied about spatial wavefront analysis of a pulsed laser output beam by means of an imaging unstable ring resonator with an infinite Fresnel number. We have constructed a Newtonian telescope type NBUR (Negative Branch Unstable Ring) Nd:YAG laser with 4 plane mirrors. Provided that the NBUR resonator is under self imaging condition, the resonator could be reduced diffraction effects which were occuring to the beam transmitting through the circular aperture of scraper mirror in the resonator. We have observed enhancement in the spatial coherence of wavefronts of laser beam due to the iterative round trips of the self imaging beam inside the ring resonator. The information on the spatial wavefronts was determined by the fringe patterns from Mach-Zehnder interferometer and the fringe analysis by means of the Fourier transform method showed the distortion of wavefronts of less than 0.2), In comparison with a standing wave type resonator, we have confirmed that the spatial coherence of the NBUR Nd:YAG laser output beam was enhanced as much as 75%. s 75%.

  • We investigated the operational characteristics of a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser, which has an unstable resonator with a GRM(Gaussian reflectivity mirror). With electrical input energy of 55 J, we obtained the fundamental energy of 470 mJ at 1064 nm and the frequency doubled energy of 280 mJ at 532 nm. The Top-Hat profile of the output beam was obtained at the near field, and beam divergence was 1.7 mard.

  • The use of null optics is proposed as a new concept for the precise alignment of a confocal unstable resonator. The characteristics of the proposed null optics are investigated and analysed with the designed null lens for a real confocal unstable resonator of which the length is 3.5 m. As a result of the analysis, the pupil map data are shown about the despace error of 1.0 mm and tilt error of 1.0 mrad.

  • First, the beam waist size of TE$M_{00}$ Nd:YAG laser mode with Positive Branch Unstable Resonator was calculated. and then, the output power, fundamental mode and multimode beam quality factor of PBUR were measured and compared with thouse of reference resonator with plane pallalel mirrors. In characterizing the beam quality, the $M^2$ concept was used. The focusability of laser beam in unstable resonators was discussed with this $M^2$.

  • We have developed the radio frequency excited slab waveguide $CO_2$ laser, The dimension of active area is $2{\times}40{\times}400$ mm to get a laser gain. Two pieces of concave mirror are used to make the unstable resonator of negative branch. The radio frequency is 123 MHz and RF input power is from 100 to 900 W. The laser gas is set to a pressure of 10 ∼ 60 torr and the mixing ration is $CO_2$:$N_2$:He=1:1:3. The laser output power of 50.9 W was obtained with laser power to RF power efficiency of 6.5 %.

  • We numerically investigate the characteristic of single Nd:YAG rod laser with the convex-plane resonator configuration in order to get the best condition for high efficient intra-cavity second harmonic generation(SHG). The beam quality is analyzed with ABCD matrixes including the thermal lensing characteristic of Nd:YAG rod. The analysis is focused on stability, M2, beam waist and mode-volume of laser beam inside the resonator. The best conditions for SHG is obtained when a laser rod is set near the curved laser mirror.

  • We constructed travelling type Nd:YAG laser with a negative branch confocal unstable ring (NBCUR) resonator like a Newtonian telescope type using four flat mirror and two positive lenses. Annular output beam was obtained by using scraper mirror. This laser oscillator has 22 optical faces and optical alignment was done by equal inclination interferance method. We inserted a Faraday rotator of permanent magnet type designed in the laboratory for unidirectional operation. We obtained laser output energy of 80m.I with electrical input energy of 70 J. and we obtained that peak power of 0.5MW through Q-switching with BDN dye.

  • Flow traveling over a cavity opening forms a vortex due to unstable shear layer and induces an aerodynamic pressure excitation from the diffusion of the vortex convecting out of the trailing edge of the opening. The interaction between the excitation force and the cavity response sustains resonance in the resonator(cavity) and locked-in vortex shedding at the leading edge of the opening. The aerodynamic excitation force can be described from the diffusion of the vortex over the trailing edge and the level of its diffusivity is related to the strength of vorticity seeded at the loading edge. In this study, the control scheme of the internal pressure oscillation was proposed from regulating the vorticity at the leading edge by use of an oscillating spoiler. It was found that the relative motion between the spoiler and the air mass at the cavity opening influenced vorticity strength and the control was achieved by direct feedback of the cavity pressure fluctuation to the actuator.
