  • The fungal flora of Mt. Gyeryong National Park was investigated for the foundation of the nature studying garden and the nature conservation of the area during the period of July to October 1981. The fungi growing wildly in the area were collected and classified into 19 families, 53 genera, 93 species of Basidiomycetes and 5 families, 7 genera, 8 species of Ascomycetes. Species of Amanita, Boletus, Suillus, Russula, Lactarius, Laccaria and Marasmius were frequently observed during the hot and humid period. Well-developed communities of Lactarius piperatus, Russula emetica and Ramaria spp. were also found in Mt. Gyeryong. Unrecorded species of fungi in Mt. Gyeryong studied were not included in this report.

  • On March 13, 2018 two postflexion larval specimens (18.28 mm and 16.80 mm in standard length) belonging to the family Cryptacanthodidae, suborder Zoarcoidei were collected from Sokcho and Gangneung in Gangwon Province. The family Cryptacanthodidae comprises 4 species worldwide: 3 in the North Pacific Ocean and 1 in the western North Atlantic Ocean. As a result of analyzing 620 bp of the mtDNA COI region, the two postflexion larvae collected in this study were identified as Cryptacanthodes bergi by 99.5% agreement with C. bergi adult registered in NCBI. Postflexion larvae of C. bergi are compressed with large eyes and radial pectoral fins and the anus located in front of the center of the body. Melanophores were intensively distributed along the dorsal midline, except for caudal peduncle, and sporadically distributed on the back of the anus. In addition, there were limited star-like melanophores on the back of the gut. This species showed 0.058 genetic distance when compared mtDNA COI region of C. aleutensis, and it was well distinguished in the distribution pattern of black vesicles of the head, count and measurement traits. Considering the morphological and ecological characteristics of this species, we suggest a new Korean name, " Gwisin-jang-gaeng-i ".

  • This study aimed to isolate wild yeasts from water and soil sample of the Nonsan stream and Sapgyoho (lake) in Chungcheonnam-do, Korea, and to further characterize previously unrecorded wild yeast strains. In total, 102 strains, representing 55 different species of wild yeast were isolated from 95 samples collected from the Jangseoncheon and Ipchoncheon of Nonsan stream in Jellabuk-do and Chungcheonnam-do. Among these, 33 strains were isolated from alkalophilic yeast extract-peptone-dextrose (YPD) medium (pH 9.0), and 9 strains were isolated concurrently on general YPD medium (pH 6.5) and alkalophilic medium. Seventeen strains of Cryptococcus laurentii were predominantly isolated. Additionally, 65 strains, representing 27 different species of wild yeast were isolated from 58 samples obtained from Sapgyoho (lake). Among the 82 isolated wild yeast strains, 8 strains, including Candida fructus JSC 72-1(JSL-GGU 015), had not previously been recorded. All 8 previously unrecorded yeasts were oval in shape except C. fructus JSC72-1(JSL-GGU-015), and only the Filobasidium chernovii JSC39-1(JSL-GGU-013) strain formed spores. All strains except Pseudosydowia eucalypti JSC23-6(JSL-GGU-012) grew well in yeast extract-peptone-dextrose (YPD) and yeast extract-malt extract media and grew in vitamin-free medium. Four strains, including P.eucalypti JSC23-6(JSL-GGU-012) grew well in 15% NaCl-containing YPD medium. F.chernovii JSC39-1(JSL-GGU-013) and Sirobasidium intermedium JSC7-3(JSL-GGU-014) assimilated lactose, and five strains, including F. chernovii JSC39-1(JSL-GGU-013) also assimilated starch. All strains were resistant to 800 ppm of Ca, Cu, Li, and Mg ions.

  • During a recent trip to Hainan Island of China, we collected some filmy ferns from Diaoluo Mountain in the southeastern of the island. Trichomanes subclathratum turns out to be a new record to the Hainan fern flora, and also represent new record to China, and Mecodium riukiuense, so far has been unaware to Chinese pteridologists is also recorded here.

  • Dactylella pseudoclavata that captures nematodes in adhesive networks was isolated from nematode-infested strawberry plants from Andong, Korea. It produces obclavate, 0-1 septate conidia, $30-40{\mu}m$ long and $8-11{\mu}m$ wide, with round distal ends and bases shaped like bottle-necks. The conidiophores were simple, occasionally branched, $150-300{\mu}m$ long, producing 1-4 conidia at the apex. Chlamydospores were abundant, intercalary or catenulate, yellowish to brown, globate or subglobate, wart on the surface, $30-35{\times}25-30{\mu}m$ in size. This is the first report of Dactylella pseudoclavata in Korea.

  • We found specimens of foliose Bangiales from the subtidal zone of Udo, Jeju Island, Korea. In molecular analyses of rbcL sequences, these Korean specimens were almost identical to Miuraea migitae from Osaka, Japan. In the morphological comparison, Korean specimens were consistent with habitat, color, and vegetative characteristics with the description of M. migitae. This is the first record of M. migitae outside the type locality and Nagasaki in Japan. This study confirms that new or unrecorded species of the order Bangiales may be discovered from subtidal habitats.

  • In April 2019, a single Peristediidae juvenile (14.1 mm SL) was collected from the waters off of Jeju-do Island, Korea. DNA barcoding identified the juvenile as Peristedion liorhynchus, an unrecorded species in Korea. P. liorhynchus has eight dorsal fin spines, 22 dorsal and 19 anal fin rays, and a long third pectoral fin ray that passes through the middle of the tail at the juvenile stage. Juvenile also have large heads, extensive head spination, and serrated edges on the ocular and parietal spines. This is the first record of P. liorhynchus in Korea; therefore, we propose the new Korean name, "Nam-bang-hwang-seong-dae".

  • During the investigation of Korean indigenous fungi from Seoul, three genera-Fuscoporia, Porostereum, and Trametopsis, and four species-Fuscoporia senex, Phlebia acerina, Porostereum spadiceum, and Trametopsis cervina were found. Their morphological characteristics were examined and their identification was confirmed by molecular analysis based on internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and nuclear large subunit ribosomal DNA region sequences. These fungi are new to Korea and registered here with descriptions.
