A total stress-based bounding surface model is developed to predict the undrained behaviour of saturated soft clays under cyclic loads based on the anisotropic hardening modulus field and bounding-surface theories. A new hardening rule is developed based on a new interpolation function of the hardening modulus that has simple mathematic expression and fewer model parameters. The evolution of hardening modulus field is described in the deviatoric stress space. It is assumed that the stress reverse points are the mapping centre points and the mapping centre moves with the variation of loading and unloading paths to describe the cyclic stress-strain hysteresis curve. In addition, by introducing a model parameter that reflects the accumulation rate and level of shear strain to the interpolation function, the cyclic shakedown and failure behaviour of soil elements with different combinations of initial and cyclic stresses can be captured. The methods to determine the model parameters using cyclic triaxial compression tests are also studied. Finally, the cyclic triaxial extension and torsional shear tests are performed. By comparing the predictions with the test results, the model can be used to describe undrained cyclic stress-strain responses of elements with different stress states for the tested clays.

A J$_{IC}$ test procedure by ultrasonic method performed to observe the crack opening behavior of fatigue precrack and detect the initiation of crack propagation of compact tension specimen in this paper. Pulse-echo method with 5 MHz transducer was used on the Cr-Mo steel quenched and tempered at 593.deg. C. We obtained the following results in the elastic-plastic fracture toughness test by ultrasonic method. Echo height is a little increased linearly and rapidly at the early stage of loading . Then it is decreased considerably, finally at the unstable crack growth stage, it is rapidly increased at an unpredictable rae. The initiation of crack propagation is supposed to be at the stage deviated from linearly decreased region and then blunted. J$_{IC}$ value(10.15-12.15 Kgf/mm) by ultrasonic method is lower than that(12.2 Kgf/mm) by R-curve method. But, it is required that the research for the more exact evaluation about correlation between echo height and the crack opening behavior of precrack tip will be continued. continued.ued.
Preloading of soft clays is a common ground stabilization method for improvement of compressibility and the undrained shear strength. The waiting period under preload is a primary design criterion controlling the degree of improvement obtained. Upon unloading the overconsolidation attained with respect to actual loads defines the long term performance. This paper presents a laboratory study for investigation of creep behavior of Famagusta Bay alluvial soft soil preloaded under various effective stresses for analysis of long term performance based on the degree of overconsolidation. Traditional one-dimensional consolidation tests as well as modified creep tests are performed on reconstituted soft specimens. Compressibility parameters are precisely backcalculated using one dimensional consolidation theory and the coefficient of creep is determined using the traditional Cassagrande method as well as two modified methods based on log cycles of time and the inflection of the creep curve. The test results indicated that the long term creep can be successfully predicted considering the proposed method. The creep coefficients derived as part of this method can also be related to the recompression index (recompression index, swelling index) considering the results of the testing method adopted in this study.

Railways are currently subject to the enforcement of speed limits for each curve as prescribed by the Railway Operating Rules in Korea. However, research is required to determine the maximum speed of trains passing through each curve that allows them to run without the risk of derailment in relation to the speed enhancement of existing railway tracks. In addition, factors affecting the running safety of railway vehicles can be classified into those in terms of vehicle aspects and those in terms of track aspects. This study sought to analyze the running safety of railway vehicles according to changes in the inclination of the rail from among the factors affecting the enhancement of safety against derailment. To increase the speed of trains passing through curves that have high derailment risk, this study also analyzed the running safety of railway vehicles according to the inclination of the rail and changes in running speed while a vehicle passes through each curve section in both the up and the down train line sections between Namsunghyun and Chungdo, which represent the actual conditions of railway tracks.

Quasi-static tests such as monotonic tension and loading/unloading tension were performed to investigate the bond characteristics and the failure processes for the T-joint specimens made from fiber/epoxy composite material. Two types of specimens, each consists of two components, e. g. skin and frame. were manufactured by co-curing and secondary bonding. During the monotonic tension test, AE instrument was used to predict AE signal at the initial and middle stage of the damage propagation. The damage initiation and progression were monitored optically using m (Charge Coupled Device) camera. And the internal crack front profile was examined using ultrasonic C-scan. The results indicate that the loads representing the abrupt increase of the AE signal are within the error range of 5 percent comparing to the loads shown in the load-time curve. Also it is shown that the initiation of crack occurred in the noodle region for both co-cured and secondarily bonded specimen. The final failure occurred in the noodle region for the co-cured specimen. but at the skin/frame termination point for the secondarily bonded specimen. Based on the results, it was found that two kinds of specimen show different failure modes depending on the manufacturing methods.
In earthquake engineering, dynamic analyses are usually conducted by using a nonlinear analytical model of the entire building in order to identify the performance against earthquakes. At the same time, a large number of dynamic analyses are required to consider uncertainties on analytical models and ground motions. Therefore, it is necessary for the analytical model to be adequate, that is to say, the runtime should not be too long as the entire building is modeled to be in much detail, or the nonlinear model should not yield outputs very far from the actual ones by excluding important behaviors too much. The analytical model is usually developed based on experimental results, which have been already conducted for reinforced concrete columns with relaxed details. Therefore, this study aimed at making analytical models to be able to simulate the hysteretic behavior of the columns simply and easily. The analytical model utilizes a lumped hinge model to represent nonlinear moment-rotation hysteretic behavior of RC columns, which is feasible for nonlinear dynamic analyses usually conducted in earthquake engineering and for matching the analytical model to test results. For the analytical model, elements and material models provided by OpenSees are utilized. The analytical model can define the envelope curve, pinching, and unloading stiffness deterioration, but shortcoming of this model is not to be able to consider axial force-moment interaction directly and to simulate strength deterioration after post-capping completely. However, the analytical model can still represent test results well by considering that the goal of this study is to propose a general way to represent the hysteretic behavior of RC columns with relaxed details, not to provide parameters for a refined hysteretic model that can be just applied case by case.
The behavior of axially loaded pile was analyzed by two methodologies: one is the finite difference method using load transfer curves recommended by API(1993) , and the other is the numerical analysis using the FLAC program. From both analyses, load-displacement curves and load distributions along the depth were evaluated appropriately for the measured. The analysis using the FLAC could capture the nonlinearity of load-displacement curve even for unloading and reloading cases, since the unloaded stress paths of fill layer elements occurred on the failure envelop. Futhermore, the measured load transfer curves were compared with the API recommendations and with the calculations obtained front the results of the FLAC analysis for the interpretation of the transfer behavior between the soil and the pile under axial loadings. It was concluded that the atrial behavior of open ended piles at Pusan could be evaluated by both the finite difference analysis using API load transfer curves and the numerical analysis using FLAC.

When a railway vehicle passes through curves & transitions, the running speed must be improved by setting limits on the maximum running speed in each section of the conventional line(Dongdaegoo-Namsunghyun) considering derailment safety. Our goal is to improve the maximum running speed of railway vehicle that passes through curves & transitions where there is a high risk of derailment. We examined the influence on the derailment safety when the railway vehicle passes through curves of actual track conditions (Dongdaegoo-Namsunghyun up and down lines). We performed the derailment safety analysis by increasing the running speed on curve radius by 5%.20% compared to existing speed under actual track conditions.

This research investigates the structural health monitoring of nonlinear structures after a major seismic event. It considers the identification of flag-shaped or pinched hysteresis behavior in response to structures as a more general case of a normal hysteresis curve without pinching. The method is based on the overall least squares methods and the log likelihood ratio test. In particular, the structural response is divided into different loading and unloading sub-half cycles. The overall least squares analysis is first implemented to obtain the minimum residual mean square estimates of structural parameters for each sub-half cycle with the number of segments assumed. The log likelihood ratio test is used to assess the likelihood of these nonlinear segments being true representations in the presence of noise and model error. The resulting regression coefficients for identified segmented regression models are finally used to obtain stiffness, yielding deformation and energy dissipation parameters. The performance of the method is illustrated using a single degree of freedom system and a suite of 20 earthquake records. RMS noise of 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% is added to the response data to assess the robustness of the identification routine. The proposed method is computationally efficient and accurate in identifying the damage parameters within 10% average of the known values even with 20% added noise. The method requires no user input and could thus be automated and performed in real-time for each sub-half cycle, with results available effectively immediately after an event as well as during an event, if required.

This paper presents a hysteretic damage model for reinforced concrete (RC) joints that explicitly accounts for the bond-slip between the reinforcing bars and the surrounding concrete. A frame element whose displacement fields for the concrete and the reinforcing bars are different to permit slip is developed. From the fiber section concept, compatibility equations for concrete, rebar, and bond are defined. Modification of the hysteretic stress-strain curve of steel is conducted for partial unloading and reloading conditions. Local bond stress-slip relations for monotonic loads are updated at each slip reversal according to the damage factor. The numerical applications of the reinforcing bar embedded in the confined concrete block, the RC column anchored in the foundation, and the RC beam-column subassemblage validate the model accuracy and show how including the effects of bond-slip leads to a good assessment of the amount of energy dissipation during loading histories.
