  • Literature had been at center-stage in the traditional grammar-translation-focused English classrooms up to the mid-twentieth century. As the Audiolingual Method and the Communicative Language Teaching have gained popularity in the English classrooms, however, literature has receded into the background of English education. The main reasons for using literary texts in the English classrooms for communication-focused English instruction need to be examined. First of all, students can come in touch with the subtle and varied uses of language through literature-based teaching. They also feel close to certain characters in the literary work and share the emotional reponses with them. They get personally involved in the plot of the story. Universal human experience and cultural enrichment are two other merits which can be conferred on students by literary texts. Such linguistic and literary experiences can be significantly integrated into the literature-based instruction. More significantly, the four language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) can be combined with one another and integrated into a literature-focused curriculum for English education. The value of literary texts in the English classrooms can be clearly demonstrated by effective ways of using such texts as Charlotte's Web for integrated instruction. The full array of benefits that literature can bring to English instruction, however, has yet to be fully realized. These potentials need to be materialized into classroom practice.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate yearly variation and stability of yield and yield components of fifteen rice varieties. Yield stability and universal variety parameter of rice varieties were utilized for statistical model developed by Stroike, Grafius, and Finlay respectively. The lowest yearly variation based on coefficient of variation was found in Dasanbyeo for number of panicles/hill, in Jodongji for number of grains/panicle, in Yongmoonbyeo for ripened grain ratio, in Nagdongbyeo for 1,000 grain weight, and in Dasanbyeo for grain yield. Stability analysis by Stroike and Johnson's model revealed that Ilpumbyeo, Hwaseongbyeo, Dongjinbyeo in Japonica type, and And-abyeo and Dasanbyeo in Tongil type had the higher stability above average. Universal varieties analyzed by Grafius model were Ilpumbyeo, Dongjinbyeo, Hwaseongbyeo, Nagdongbyeo, and Jodongji in Japonica, and Dasanbyeo and Samgangbyeo in Tongil type. Damageum, Dongjinbyeo, Hwaseongbyeo and Ilpumbyeo in Japonica, and Dasanbyeo and Yongmoonbyeo in Tongil type were found to be highly stable as analyzed by Finlay & Wilkinson's model. In conclusion, with reference to both grain yield and stability based on above three methods, Ilpumbyeo, Hwaseongbyeo, and Dongjinbyeo in Japonica, and Dasanbyeo in Tongil type were evaluated to be highly year-stable and high-yielding.

However, there have been insufficient in-depth research on the types of love the two works have. Therefore, this study will focus on how the types of love in the two animations mirror the concept of love in Plato's theory of Eros through the analysis of two films' characters. The desire for memory and recovery can be seen in , and glimpses of each phase of aim towards changes in physical appearance can be shown in . These describe the function and the purpose of Eros that Plato states in Socrates' terms in Phaedrus and Symposium. Plato ultimately defined Eros as a spirit that leads to the world of Ideas and suggested the five stages of love that are divided in accordance with the ultimate purpose and attitude of mankind towards Eros. The cognition area, changes in appearance of the characters and spatial ranks in and critically reveal such core concepts of the theory of Eros. It is noteworthy that the two works show the origin of the most universal ideology of the West. These two animation films are particularly significant in terms of that they reflect the western epistemology while covering exclusive and covert ethnic emotions.

  • This paper studies the recent surge in the number of faith-based films in Hollywood, with the aim to explore the context and implications of this new trend. By using the theoretical framework of the study of the Tilich and Van der Leeuw, who have explored the relationship between religion, culture and art, this article discusses the meaning of the spiritual theme in the film. A couple of common points can be found among the faith-based films that have been produced since the 2010s. While these films attempt a universal approach to the fundamental theme of spirituality through popular narratives familiar to the audience, they also stress 'historical truthfulness and credibility' by representing the reality, such as a featuring real person or a true story in the film. The main characters are depicted as "victorious losers" that are distinguished from the typical Hollywood superhero and the films repeatedly show the human being constantly 'asking' questions to God. By analyzing these characteristics, the paper demonstrates that recent Hollywood faith-based films have successfully differentiated themselves from existing religious films while symbolizing the universal beliefs and values beyond the religious message so as to attract more audiences to this field. The paper also suggests that despite the advances in modern science and knowledge, the public will always yearn for a spiritual recovery and salvation through the film medium, serving as a potential source that provides an outlet for spiritual experience.
