  • Ferrous slag is a by-product from steel making process and waste concrete is generated from construction activities. Large part of ferrous slag and waste concrete are recycled as construction materials. However, Ca2+ leaching out of ferrous slag and waste concrete in the water-contacting environment can cause a strength change. Strength can be reduced due to the dissolution of solid form of CaO which is one of the main contents of ferrous slag and waste concrete. On the other hand, strength can be enhanced due to the pozzolanic reaction of cementitious components with water. In this study, steelmaking slag, blast furnace slag, and waste concrete were aged by exposure to raining events, and the change of their compaction and shear strength characteristics was investigated. Optimum moisture content of all materials used in this study increased with aging period while maximum dry unit weight slightly decreased, implying that the relative contents of fine particles increased as the CaO solid particles were dissolved. Internal friction angle and shear strength of recycled materials also increased with aging period, indicating that the materials became denser by the decrease of void ratio attributed to the fine particles generated during the weathering process and the development of cementitious compounds increasing the bonding and interlocking forces between the particles. The results of this study demonstrated that mechanical strength of recycled materials used as construction materials has little chance to be deteriorated during their service life.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the application of oyster shells (OS) as aggregates for concrete. For this purpose, five reference mixes with W/C ratios of 0.4 ∼0.6 at intervals of 0.05 were used. The replacement proportion of OS was varied with ratios of 0, 10, 30, 50 and 100% by volume of fine or coarse aggregate in the reference mixes. OS was washed and crushed for using as aggregates. New chemical reaction between crushed OS aggregate and cement paste was tested through XRD and SEM analysis. Two strength properties (compressive and flexural) were considered. Strength tests were carried out at the ages of 1, 3, 7, 14 and 28 days. The variations of workability, air content and density, drying shrinkage of the specimens with different proportions of OS were also studied. Finally, the hollow concrete block using OS as a substitute material for fine aggregate was made for testing the application of OS. Experimental results showed that my new chemical reaction did not occur due to mixing OS in concrete. The workability and strengths decreased with increase in proportion of OS. The same trend was observed in density and unit weight, but air content increased due to the inherent pores in OS, which showed a possibility to produce light weight concrete with low strength by using OS as coarse aggregates for concrete. Tests on hollow concrete block showed that the compressive strength and absorption ratio were satisfied with quality requirements when the fine aggregate was substituted with OS up to 50% in volume.

  • This paper is Intended to investigate physical properties and surface glossing of exposed concrete incorporating granulated blast furnace slag(BS). According to test results there is no remarkable variations in fluidity and air content with increase of BS, but unit weight shows decline tendency Compressive strength at later age gains considerably due to potential hydraulicity reaction of BS. It shows that drying shrinkage increases. It is found that low W/B, surface coating and high BS content lead to favorable effects on the surface glossing of exposed concrete because of filling effects on the voids of the concrete. It is improved by about 7 % with increase every 10 % of BS content. The effects of form pannel kinds on the improvement of surface glossing are in order for acryl, fancy, steel and wood.

  • Fire doors installed to prevent the spread of fire in buildings are made of paper honeycomb, glass wool, and other materials. Due to their high water absorption rate, they absorb ambient moisture and degrade, and their increased weight causes them to sag internally, creating voids that can warp in the event of a fire and allow flames to pass through. To overcome these issues, research is being conducted on the physical performance of lightweight aerated concrete. However, there is a lack of research on how to ensure fire resistance. Therefore, in this study, the backside temperature of lightweight aerated concrete formulations was measured and compared and analyzied with the physical performance. Since it is difficult to achieve low density by saturation alone, aerated concrete with EPS was produced, which resulted in a density reduction of 24'26%, but the strength increase per unit cement increase was 5'25%, which tended to be lower than the formulation without EPS. The results showed that the lightweight aerated concrete with EPS was 130~140℃ lower than the lightweight aerated concrete with EPS, which is believed to be due to the melting point of EPS delayed the heat diffusion. In the future, wo plan to conduct research to identify the optimal formulation for fire door core materials by varying the amount of EPS added and using industrial by-products to increase long-term strength.

  • Exposed to various environments, concrete confronts degradation by a lot of physical and chemical reaction. Though so many experiments and theorizations on the single condition of concrete degradation have been carried out by constant studies, the truth for now is that there are few studies on the compound phenomenon of degradation related with marine environments. Accordingly, this study measured the degree of degradation in the change of external shape, the change of unit weight and compressive strength, ultrasonic velocity test, and the change of length, etc. after exposing the specimen of cement mortar to the environment between 0 cycle and the maximum of 300 cycles under the condition of aquatic curing, freezing and thawing, and compound degradation, using mineral admixture effective for concrete degradation as a binder. The result indicated that the case of adding mineral admixture showed greater resistance than that of using OPC only, and specifically, the specimen with the additive of slag powder and three component system showed very excellent resistance to freezing and thawing, and compound degradation.

  • Various researches on the application of polymer dispersions to the cement mortar and concrete have been carried out in many countries like America, Japan and Germany and so on due to their high performance and good modification effect. PAE of polymer dispersion widely used in situ was employed that the high flowability may be induced in the cement mortar. In order to investigate the modification of cement mortar with high flowability by PAE and fracture mode of adhesive strength properties in tension of that, experimental parameters were set as PAE solid-cement ratio(P/C) and cement: fine aggregate(C:F) and the experiments such as unit weight, flow, consistency change, crack resistance and segregation that inform on the general properties have been done. Adhesion in tension is measured with a view to comprehending the properties and fracture mode in tensile load. Consistency change of cement mortar modified by PAE did grow better as the ratio of PAE solid-cement increased and was much superior to that of resin based flooring such as polyurethane and epoxy which recorded the loss of consistency in 90 min. after mixing. Adhesive strength in tension increased with continuity during curing period and showed the maximum in case of C:F=1:1 and P/C=20%.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the flexural strengthening effects of CF(Carbon Fiber) sheet for the full-scale RC beams with multi-layer CF sheets. The partial strength reduction factors of CF sheets are suggested from the full-scale RC beams tests strengthened with multi-layer CF sheets up to six layers as well as material tests. From the material tensile tests, it was observed that the average tensile strengths of CF sheets per layer are decreased as the number of CF sheets is increased. Also the steep strength reductions of CF sheets in material test results at rupture are observed compared with the structural tests results for the full-scale RC beams strengthened with multi-layer CF sheets. Finally, the partial strength reduction factors far CF sheets up to six layers are suggested considering the effects of multi-layer and unit weight of CF sheets.

  • Reinforced concrete structures require large amounts of concrete and rebar in the construction stage. Rebar is a major resource for reinforced concrete structures, and generates more CO2 per unit weight than other materials. To solve this problem, it was confirmed that the cutting waste can be close to zero when the special length of the rebar is calculated in the drawing created after structural design. However, a system for automatically calculating the length of reinforcing bars to efficiently calculate the total amount of reinforcing bars has not been established. Therefore, the objective of this study is a basic study of automatic rebar length estimate algorithm of bearing wall by using BIM-based shape codes built in Revit. The bearing wall rebar can be automatically derived using the developed model. Furthermore, through applying the developed model to the construction field, it will greatly contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by reducing rebar cutting waste.
