  • A fixed rate speech coder based on the filter bank and the non-uniform sampling technique is proposed. The non-uniform sampling is achieved by the detection of inflection points (IPs). A speech block is band passed by the filter bank, and the subband signals are processed by the IP detector, and the detected IP patterns are compared with entries of the IP database. For each subband signal, the address of the closest member of the database and the energy of the IP pattern are transmitted through channel. In the receiver, the decoder recovers the subband signals using the received addresses and the energy information, and reconstructs the speech via the filter bank summation. As results, the coder shows fixed data rate contrary to the existing speech coders based on the non-uniform sampling. Through computer simulation, the usefulness of the proposed technique is confirmed. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) performance of the proposed method is comparable to that of the uniform sampled pulse code modulation (PCM) below 20 kbps data rate.

  • As a generalization of the Fourier transform, the fractional Fourier transform plays an important role both in theory and in applications of signal processing. We present a new approach to reach a uniform sampling theorem in the shift-invariant spaces associated with the fractional Fourier transform domain.

  • A low bit rate speech coder based on the non-uniform sampling technique is proposed. The non-uniform sampling technique is based on the detection of inflection points (IP). A speech block is processed by the IP detector, and the detected IP pattern is compared with entries of the IP database. The address of the closest member of the database is transmitted with the energy of the speech block. In the receiver, the decoder reconstructs the speech block using the received address and the energy information of the block. As results, the coder shows fixed data rate contrary to the existing speech coders based on the non-uniform sampling. Through computer simulation, the usefulness of the proposed technique is shown. The SNR performance of the proposed method is approximately 5.27 dB with the data rate of 1.5 kbps.

  • This paper presents a new uniform sampling method for two-dimensional contour. The proposed method improves the uniformity of contour sampling in terms of the interpolation of the corner points extracted from chain codes. The performance of the proposed method is analyzed through the length estimation and shape recognition of two-dimensional contour. The experimental results show the significant improvement over the conventional method.

  • To reduce the redundancy within samples that resulted from uniform sampling method, nonuniform sampling or nonredundant-sample coding methods can be considered. But it is well-known that when conventional nonuniform sampling methods are applied directly to speech signal, the amount of data required is comparable to or more than that required by uniform sampling method like PCM. To overcome this problem, we consider properties of speech signal in the sense of perception, and suggest a nonuniform sampling method at the maxima and minima of speech wave. To analyze the performance of the suggested method, compression ratio is considered. We show that compression ratio can be improved by silence detection, which can't be implemented by conventional methods based on uniform sampling. As experimental results, compression ratios of 1.54 without silence detection and 2.88 with silence detection for 8kHz 8-bit PCM signals are obtained.

  • Of the experiments to shorten NMR measuring time by sparse sampling, non-uniform sampling (NUS) is advantageous. NUS miminizes systematic errors which arise due to the lack of samplings by randomization. In this study, I report the real-time acquisition of 3D NMR data using NUS and maximum-entropy (MaxEnt) data processing. The real-time acquisition combined with NUS can reduce NMR measuring time much more. Compared with multidimensional decomposition (MDD) method, which was originally suggested by Jaravine and Orekhov (JACS 2006, 13421-13426), MaxEnt is faster at least several times and more suitable for the realtime acquisition. The designed sampling schedule of current study makes all the spectra during acquisition have the comparable resulting resolutions by MaxEnt. Therefore, one can judge the quality of spectra easily by examining the intensities of peaks. I report two cases of 3D experiments as examples with the simulated subdataset from experimental data. In both cases, the spectra having good qualitie for data analysis could be obtained only with 3% of original data. Its corresponding NMR measuring time was 8 minutes for 3D HNCO of ubiquitin.

  • We discuss a model for acceptance/rejection decision regarding finite populations. The model is based on a beta-binomial prior distribution and additive costs -- relative sampling costs, relative sorting costs and costs of accepted defectives. A substantial part of the paper is devoted to constructing a Bayes sequential sampling acceptance plan (BSSAP) for attributes under the model. It is shown that the Bayes fixed size sampling acceptance plans (BFSAP) are better than the Hald's (1960) single sampling acceptance plans based on a uniform prior. Some tables and examples are provided for comprisons of the minimum Bayes risks of the BSSAP and those of the BFSAP based on a uniform prior and the model.
