Machined graphite/epoxy composite surfaces were studied by using SEM(Scanning Electron Microscopy). surface profilometry and its analysis to determine suitable surface describing parameters for machined unidirectional and laminate composite surface. The surface roughness and profile are found to be highly dependent on the fiber layup direction and the measurement direction. Machined unidirectional and 0.deg. 45 .deg. 90 .deg. plies in laminate composite surface profiles are found to be Gaussian in the direction of machining. Since there exist bare fibers without matrix smearing in 0 .deg. ply, higher surface roughness values were found in this orientation. It was possible to machine 90 .deg. and -45 .deg. plies due to the adjacent plies, which were holding those plies. It was found that the microgeometrical variations in terms of roughness parameters Ra without Dy (maximum Damage Depth) region and Dy are better descriptors of the machined laminate composite surface than commonly used roughness parameters Ra and Ra. The characteristics of surface profiles in laminate composite are well represented in CHD (Cumulative Height Distribution) plot and PPD (Percentage Probability Density) plot. Also, the power spectral density function is shown to be capable of identifying the wavelength distribution of the machining damage.
Effective stiffness of short fiber composite with a three-dimensional random orientation of fibers is derived theoretically and compared with available experimental data. The laminate analogy and transformed laminate analogy are used for modulus prediction of 2-D and 3-D random composites, respectively. The effective stiffness of random oriented fiber composite can be expressed in terms of longitudinal and transverse stiffnesses of unidirectional composites. The result of transformed laminate analogy is more accurate than other approaches such as, Christensen-Waals equational and Lavengood-Goettler equation, etc. Also the effective properties of random oriented fiber composite can be expressed in terms of fiber and matrix properties such as elastic modulus, shear modulus and Poisson's ratio.
In the present study, the combined effects of thermal and mechanical loadings on the interlaminar shear stresses of both moderately thin and thick composite laminated beams are numerically analyzed. The finite element modelling of laminated composite beams and analysis of interlaminar stresses are performed using the commercially available software package MSC NASTRAN/PATRAN. The validity of the finite element analysis (FEA) is demonstrated by comparing the experimental test results obtained due to mechanical loadings under the influence of thermal environment with those derived using the present FEA. Various parametric studies are also performed to investigate the effect of thermal loading on interlaminar stresses generated in symmetric, anti-symmetric, asymmetric, unidirectional, cross-ply, and balanced composite laminated beams of different stacking sequences with identical mechanical loadings and various boundary conditions. It is shown that the elevated thermal environment lead to higher interlaminar shear stresses varying with the stacking sequence, length to thickness ratio, ply orientations under identical mechanical loading and boundary conditions of the composite laminated beams. It is realized that the magnitude of the interlaminar stresses along xz plane is always much higher than those of along yz plane irrespective of the ply-orientation, length to thickness ratios and boundary conditions of the composite laminated beams. It is also observed that the effect of thermal environment on the interlaminar shear stresses in carbon-epoxy fiber reinforced composite laminated beams are increasing in the order of symmetric cross-ply laminate, unidirectional laminate, asymmetric cross-ply laminate and anti-symmetric laminate. The interlaminar shear stresses are higher in thinner composite laminated beams compared to that in thicker composite laminated beams under all environmental temperatures irrespective of the laminate stacking sequence, ply-orientation and boundary conditions.
Machined graphite/epoxy surfaces were studied by using SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy), surface profilometry and its analysis to determine suitable surface describing parameters for machined unidirectional and multidirectional laminate composite. The surface roughness and profile are found to be highly depdndent on the fiber layup direction and the measurement direction. It was possible to machine 90 .deg. and -45 .deg. plies due to the adjacent plies, which were holding those plies. It was found that the microgeometrical variations in terms of roughness parameters $R_{a}$ without $D_{y}$(Maximum Damage Depth) region and $D_{y}$are better descriptors of the machined laminate composite surface than commonly used roughness parameters $R_{a}$and $R_{max}$ The characteristics of surface profiles in laminate composite are well represented in CPD (Cumulative Probability Distribution) plot and PPD (Percentage Probability Density) plot. Edge-trimmed multidirectional laminate surfaces are Gaussian and random for profiles measured along the tool movement direction, they are periodic and non-Gaussian in the direction perpendicular to the tool movement.t.ent.t.
A parametric study has been conducted to investigate the effect of the geometry on the strength of an unidirectional and fabric hybrid laminated composite joint. Tests are conducted for the specimens with nine different edge-to-hole diameter or width-to-hole diameter ratios. For the finite element analysis, the characteristic length method is used, and the tests for determining the characteristic length are performed additionally. Nonlinear contact problem between the pin and laminate is modeled by the gap element in MSC/NASTRAN. Tsai-Wu failure criteria is applied to the stress on the characteristic curve. The finite element and experimental results shows good agreement in strength of composite joint. Results of the parametric study shows the effect of the geometry is remarkable in the specimens with width-to-hole diameter ratio less than 2.8 and edge-to-hole diameter ratio less than 1.4.
In this study, fatigue behavior of the optical fiber sensor embedded in composite laminate was investigated. Static tensile and fatigue tests were performed for three types of laminated composite specimens with embedded optical fiber sensor in the neutral plane ; [0/sub 6//OF/0/sub 6/]/sub T/, [0/sub 2//90/sub 4//OF/90/sub 4//0/sub 2/]/sub T/ and [0/sub 3//90/sub 3//OF/90/sub 3//0/sub 3/]/sub T/. The fracture of the embedded optical fiber sensor was detected by the intensity drop off of laser signal transmitted through the optical fiber sensors embedded within laminated composite specimen. The maximum fatigue stress applied to laminated specimen was compared with the average tensile stress at which the fracture of the embedded optical fiber within the laminate occurred under static tensile loading. From the experiments, firstly it is observed that the decrease in the life of optical fiber sensors embedded within unidirectional-ply laminate by the fatigue loading is relatively small compared to that of cross-ply laminate. Secondly, the optical fiber embedded in unidirectional-ply laminate is fractured by the fatigue damage due to the growth of internal defects of optical fiber, however the optical fiber embedded in cross-ply laminate is fractured by the growth of transverse matrix crack.
The residual stress distribution in a unidirectional graphite/epoxy laminate induced during the fabrication process is investigated at the microstress level within the scope of linear viscoelasticity. To estimate the residual stresses, the fabrication process is divided into polymerization phase and cool-down phase, and strength of materials approach is employed. Large residual stresses are not generated during polymerization phase because the relaxation modulus is relatively small due to the relaxation ability at this temperature level. The residual stresses increase remarkably during cool-down process. The magnitude of final residual stress is about 80% of the ultimate strength of the matrix material at room temperature. This suggests that the residual stress can have a significant effect on the performance of composite structure.
In this study, unidirectional and plain woven carbon fiber reinforced magnesium matrix composite laminates were fabricated by the liquid pressing infiltration process, and evolutions of the microstructure and compressive strength of the composite laminates under corrosion were investigated by static immersion tests. In the case of the unidirectional composite laminate, the main microstructural damage during immersion appeared as a form of corrosion induced cracks, which were formed at both CF/Mg interfaces and the interfaces between layers. On the otherhand, wrap/fill interface cracks were mainly formed in the plain woven composite laminate, without any cracks at the CF/Mg interface. The formation of these cracks was considered to be associated with internal thermal residual stress, which was generated during cooling after the fabrication process of these materials. As a consequence of the corrosion induced cracks, the thickness of both laminates increased in directions vertical to the fibers with increasing immersion time. With increasing immersion time, the compressive strengths of both composite laminates also decreased continuously. It was found that the plain woven composite laminates have superior corrosion resistance and stability under a corrosive condition than unidirectional laminates.

Off-axis compressive deformation behavior of a unidirectional CFRP laminate at high temperature and its strain-rate dependence in a quasi-static range are examined for various fiber orientations. By comparing the off-axis compressive and tensile behaviors at an equal strain rate, the effect of different loading modes on the flow stress level, rate-dependence and nonlinearity of the off-axis inelastic deformation is elucidated. The experimental results indicate that the compressive flow stress levels for relatively larger off-axis angles of $30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$ are about 50 percent larger than in tension for the same fiber orientations, respectively. The nonlinear deformations under off-axis tensile and compressive loading conditions exhibit significant strain-rate dependence. Similar features are observed in the fiber-orientation dependence of the off-axis flow stress levels under tension and compression and in the off-axis flow stress differential in tension and compression, regardless of the strain rate. A phenomenological theory of viscoplasticity is then developed which can describe the tension-compression asymmetry as well as the rate dependence, nonlinearity and fiber orientation dependence of the off-axis tensile and compressive behaviors of unidirectional composites in a unified manner. It is demonstrated by comparing with experimental results that the proposed viscoplastic constitutive model can be applied with reasonable accuracy to predict the different, nonlinear and rate-dependent behaviors of the unidirectional composite under off-axis tensile and compressive loading conditions.
