  • The purpose of this study was to determine the optimum mix proportion of latex modified mortar for agricultural underwater concrete structures repair. The experimental variables included a latex and antiwashout admixture amount, binder-sand ratio, water-binder ratio. This study were evaluated a repair performance and environment effect of latex modified repair mortar for agricultural underwater concrete structures. The pH test was conducted to evaluated the environmental effect and the flow test was peformed to evaluated the workability. Also, compressive, flexural and bond tests were conducted. Test results show that the optimum mix proportion of latex modified repair mortar for agricultural underwater concrete structures, was achieved by 1:1.5 binder-sand ratio, 5% latex ratio (weight of binder), 1.3% antiwashout admixture ratio (weight of binder), 0.33 water-binder ratio and 10% silica lune replacement ratio (weight of cement). The environmental effect and repair performance of optimum mix proportion satisfied all target performance.

  • Underwater cutting has a different mechanism than dry cutting, and there are more restrictions than benefits. Due to these constraints, research and development of underwater cutting has been very limited. At present, reactor dismantling is emerging as an important task worldwide, and reactor pressure containers, a key part of the reactor, are decommissioned based on underwater cutting. Reactor pressure containers are high-level radioactive waste, which is one of the main goals of today, such as to bridge the gap between environmental, safety, and cutting performance; hence, a process suitable for cutting should be applied. Therefore, many studies are being conducted on underwater cutting in connection with the dismantling of nuclear reactors in various areas in order to find appropriate processes. This paper first introduces the core technology of underwater cutting processes and discusses various processes. The emphasis is then placed on the adequacy of the reactor dismantling application. More specifically, we examine the suitability for the mechanical and thermal cutting processes, respectively, to find a solution suitable for dismantling a reactor. We discuss how each solution can sufficiently perform the specified functions at each stage of reactor dismantling and suggest that these processes can perform all of the work of underwater cutting.

  • In order to successfully exploit underwater resources, the first step would be a marine environmental research and exploration on the seafloor. Traditionally one sets up a long-term underwater experimental unit on the seafloor and retrieves the unit later after a certain period time. Essential to these applications is the reliable teleoperation and telemetering of the unit. This study presents ultrasonic-wave remote control system and an underwater sound recognition algorithm that can identify the sound signal without the influence of disturbances due to underwater environmental changes. The proposed method provides a means suitable for units which require low power dissipation and long-time underwater operation. We demonstrate its ability of securing stability and fast sound recognition through experimental methods.

  • This paper presents the characteristics of various strengths of underwater non-segregation concrete. Three types of cements including low-heat cements has been used to make the test specimens for compressive strength, modulus of rupture and bond strength. The test specimens have been made both in ambient and underwater conditions to take into account the variation according to the environmental condition.

  • Water covers two-thirds of the earth and has a great influence on the future existence of all human being. Thailand has extensive coastline and near shore water that contain vast biological and mineralogical resources. The rivers and canals can be found around the country especially in the Bangkok, which once called the Venice of the East. Autonomous underwater robot (AUR) will be soon a tool to help us better understand water resources and other environmental issues. This paper presents the design and basic control of a six-degree of freedom AUR "Chalawan", which was constructed to be used as a testbed for shallow. It is a simple low cost open-frame design, which can be modified easily to supports various research areas in the underwater environment. It was tested with a conventional proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller. After fine-tuning of the controller gains, the results showed the controller's good performances. In the future, the dynamic model of the robot will be analyzed and identified. The advanced control algorithm will be implemented based on the obtained model.

  • Images obtained from underwater are usually degraded due to the environmental conditions. Some of the typical degradation factors include turbidity and color degradation. These degradations can be attributed to the absorptive and scattering properties of underwater degradation in terms of optical parameters, such as modulation transfer function (MTF), optical transfer function (OTF),point spread function (PSF), and color constancy. In this paper, we use the CODE V optical simulation software to mimic underwater conditions and model the imaging platform, thereby studying various parameters, such as PSF and MTF, and we use the PSF to remove the underwater turbidity. Experimental results show increased performance with the algorithm, compared to other existing methods.

  • Underwater acoustic communication channel is influenced by environmental parameters such as multipath, background noise and scattering. Therefore, a transmitted signal is influenced by the sea surface and the sea bottom boundaries, and a received signal shows a delay spread. These factors create a noise in the image and degrade the quality of underwater acoustic communication. To solve these problems, in this paper, we evaluate the performance of an underwater acoustic communication model using a denoising auto-encoder used for unsupervised learning. Noise images generated by the underwater multipath channel were collected and used as training data. Experimental results were analyzed as a PSNR parameter that expressed the noise ratio of the two images.

  • Recently, the underwater radiated noises generated from large commercial ships have become a globally important issue. Countries with large ports and environmental protection organizations demand strict safety guidelines in relation to underwater radiated noise. In this paper, the coupled PFFE/PFBE method is used to investigate the vibration and underwater radiated noise of a commercial ship. PFFEM is employed to analyze the vibrational responses of the commercial ship, and PFBEM is applied to analyze the underwater radiation noise. The vibrational energy of the structure is treated as an acoustic intensity boundary condition of PFBEM to calculate the underwater radiation noise. Numerical simulations are presented for the commercial ship under various frequencies, and reliable results are obtained.
