  • Because of the continuous increasing of energy consumption, metallic pipelines are widely used to supply services to customers such as gas, oil, water, etc. Most common metallic pipelines are underground and are now frequently being installed in nearby electric power lines. In recent years, buried gas pipeline close to power lines can be subjected to hazardous induction effects, especially during single line to ground faults. because it can cause corrosion and it poses a threat to the safety of workers responsible for maintenance. Accordingly, it is necessary to take into consideration for analysis of induced voltage on gas pipelines in transmission lines. This paper analyzed the induced voltage on the gas pipelines due to the 154kV transmission lines in normal case and in different faulty case conditions using EMTP (Electro-Magnetic Transients Program).

  • In present, most of metallic structures (gas pipeline, oil pipeline, water pipeline, etc) are running parallel with subway in Seoul and Pusan. In this case, subway system make a stray current due to electrical corrosion on metallic structures. The owner of metallic structures has a burden of responsibility for the protection of corrosion and the prevention against big accident such as gas explosion or soil pollution and so on. So, they have to measure and analyze the data about P/S(Pipe to Soil) potential, amplitude of stray current, point of source of stray current and so on. In this paper, results of development about Wireless Remote Monitoring and Control System on Underground Pipeline in Stray Current Conditions are presented. And also field test data should be reporting.

  • Due to rapid urbanization and industrialization, water supply and sewer line systems are also developed relevantly. Manhole is an essential component structure of the pipeline system. Manhole is a structure constructed to accommodate the direction, dimension, differences in level, and easy of maintenance in the pipeline system. In this paper we present the result of investigations pertaining to the structural behavior of PVC sewer manhole buried underground. In the paper mechanical properties of PVC material are reported. In addition, by the finite element analysis (FEA), we confirmed that a PVC double-wall corrugated pipe manhole, when it is buried underground, is safe for the stress as well as buckling strength if the manhole is constructed within the suggested limit of buried depth.

  • The thermally insulated underground pipelines have been used for district heating system. The sensor wire embedded in the insulation was used for monitoring the insulating resistance between the sensor wire and the pipe. The resistance measurement system detects corrosion of steel pipe under insulation. The corrosion and stress corrosion cracking(SCC) characteristics of sensor wire in synthetic ground water were investigated using the electrochemical methods and constant load SCC tests. The polarization tests were used to study the electrochemical behavior of sensor wire. The sensor wire was passivated at temperatures ranging from 25 to $95^{\circ}C$. However, the applied sensing current larger than passive current resulted in breakdown of passive film. The constant load SCC tests were performed to investigate the effects of applied current and load on the fracture behavior. Stress-corrosion cracks initiated at pits that were produced by sensing current. The growth of the pit involves a tunnelling mechanism, which leads to ductile fracture.

  • This study developed an image processing system for detecting damages on underground spiral PVC pipes. The detection method is simple-identifying damaged areas by measuring circularity along the pipeline. This uses the assumption that damage parts will not make a circular shape. Conventional devices check the circular shape of the pipe along the pipeline by measuring the angles between 6 spring-connected legs on the device. The conventional device, however, requires the insertion of 3 different wires (electrical, communication, and camera lines) along with a guide wire for pulling the device. The developed system presented here has simplified this system, requiring only a camera line while maintaining reasonable accuracy in damage detection.

  • In this paper, the MFL (magnetic flux leakage) signals of complex defects on the underground gas pipeline are analyzed and their depths are estimated. Since closely-located defects (complex defects) affect each other, accelerate the progress of defection, and are finally combined to one (cluster), it's meaningful to differentiate complex defects from single defects by analyzing their characteristics. Various types of complex defects are characterized and analyzed by defining the safety distance for interference. 26 artificial defects are carved on the pipeline simulation facility (PSF) to analyze the characteristics of complex defect and demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed complex defect estimation. The proposed method shows average length error of 5.8 mm, average width error of 15.55 mm, and average depth error of 8.59%, respectively.

  • The Korean Government has proceeded petroleum gas pipeline construction business since 2014 for rural districts. The operating pressure of petroleum gas pipeline are from 25kPa to 75kPa which are different from that of natural gas pipeline. Petroleum gas pipeline pressure is ten or forty times higher than natural gas operating pressure. For this reason, petroleum gas pipeline has higher probability of accident occurrence from massive gas leakage. Korea Gas Safety Corporation begins to development excess flow valves and their performance testing equipment since 2017. The excess flow valves stop the gas flow when a overflow happened in gas pipeline. The excess flow valves are generally not installed in main pipeline, because that may block massive gas supply. So, the valves are installed in starting points of branch pipes. According to the number of house and amount of gas use, a shut-off point of exxcess flow valve is determined called as Trip Flow. The trip point is the most important thing of excess flow valve, so, it is required a equipment testing the performances of excess flow valve as trip point.

  • Shield tunneling construction commonly crosses underground pipelines in urban areas, resulting in soil loss and followed deformation of grounds and pipelines nearby, which may threaten the safe operation of shield tunneling. This paper investigated the pipeline deformation caused by double curved shield tunnels in soil-rock composite stratum in Nanjing, China. The stratum settlement equation was modified to consider the double shield tunneling. Moreover, a three dimensional finite element model was established to explore the effects of hard-layer ratio, tunnel curvature radius, pipeline buried depth and other influencing factors. The results indicate the subsequent shield tunnel would cause secondary disturbance to the soil around the preceding tunnel, resulting in increased pipeline and ground surface settlement above the preceding tunnel. The settlement and stress of the pipeline increased gradually as buried depth of the pipeline increased or the hard-layer ratio (the ratio of hard-rock layer thickness to shield tunnel diameter within the range of the tunnel face) decreased. The modified settlement calculation equation was consistent with the measured data, which can be applied to the settlement calculation of ground surface and pipeline settlement. The modified coefficients a and b ranged from 0.45 to 0.95 and 0.90 to 1.25, respectively. Moreover, the hard-layer ratio had the most significant influence on the pipeline settlement, but the tunnel curvature radius and the included angle between pipeline and tunnel axis played a dominant role in the scope of the pipeline settlement deformation.

  • It is widely known that the leak locating of underground plastic pipelines is much more difficult than that of cast iron pipelines. The precision of the leak locating depends upon the speed of leak signal and the time delay estimation between the two sensors on the pipeline. In this paper, six different windowing filters are considered to improve the time delay estimation especially for the plastic pipelines. The time delay is usually estimated from the peak time of cross-correlation functions. The filtering windows including rectangle, Roth, Wiener, SCOT, PHAT and maximum likelihood are applied to derive the generalized cross-correlation function and compared each other. Experimental results for the actual plastic underground water supply pipeline show that the introduction of the filtering windows improved the precision of time delay estimation. Some window functions provide excellent leak locating capability for the plastic pipe of 98 m long, which is less than 1 % of the pipe lengths. Also a new probabilistic approach that the combinations of all results from each filtering window is suggested for the better leak locating.

  • An experimental chamber was fabricated to observe the gas diffusion behavior of leak gas from underground city-gas pipeline. It was made of acryl so that feeding of gas and the measuring points of the gas could be varied in each experiment. The MOS sensors were used to measure the concentrations of leak gas. The soil media such as the Jumunjin standard sand and the granite weathered soil were used to measure the gas diffusion and the change of leak gas concentrations was measured with time for various gas flow rate. As the distance between the leak point of gas and the measuring point of MOS sensor decreases, or the leak rate increases, the detection time of gas at a measuring points decreases and the gas concentration increases quickly and the concentration of the gas at steady state also increases. As the density of granite weathered soil is higher than that of Jumunjin standard sand for compaction, the detection time of leak gas in the granite weathered soil was longer than that in the Jumunjin standard soil. The leak gas concentrations in the granite weathered soil were lower than those in the Jumunjin standard sand at the beginning of gas leaking from a pipe, but inverse phenomenon was occured at steady state.
