  • To perform efficient and safe haulage operations in mines, the condition of unsurfaced roads where dump trucks are moving should be regularly investigated, and systematic maintenance should be carried out according to the results. In this study, we developed a smartphone application that can be used to periodically investigate the unsurfaced road conditions in mines. Using the developed application, necessary data can be easily collected on site to evaluate the condition of unsurfaced roads according to the Unsurfaced Road Condition Index (URCI) evaluation system presented by the US Army Corps of Engineers. The smartphone application was tested at several sections of unsurfaced road in the Ilkwang mine, Busan, Korea. The results showed that the field investigation about 7 factors considered in the URCI evaluation system can be conducted through the user interface screen, and the URCI value can be calculated in the field to evaluate the condition of unsurfaced road. The smartphone application developed in this study can be useful for surveying and evaluating the unsurfaced road conditions at the mine site.

  • Video Incident Detection System is a detection system for the purpose of detection of an emergency in an unexpected situation such as a pedestrian in a tunnel, a falling object, a stationary vehicle, a reverse run, and a fire(smoke and flame). In recent years, the importance of the city center has been emphasized by the construction of underpasses in great depth underground space. Therefore, in order to apply Video Incident Detection System to a Double Deck Tunnel, it was developed to reflect the design characteristics of the Double Deck Tunnel. and In this paper especially, the fire detection technology, which is not it is difficult to apply to the Double Deck Tunnel environment because it is not supported on existing Video Incident Detection System or has a fail detect, we propose fire detection using color image analysis, silhouette spread, and statistical properties, It is verified through a real fire test in a double deck tunnel test bed environment.

  • Brine leakage is a common phenomenon during construction facilitated by artificial freezing technique, threatening the stability of frozen wall due to the continual thawing of already frozen domain. This paper takes the frequently encountered soft clay in Wujiang District as the study object, and remolded specimens were prepared by mixing calcium chloride solutions at five levels of concentration. Both the deformation and pore water pressure of frozen specimens during thawing were investigated by two-stage loading tests. Three sections were noted from the changes in the strain rate of specimens during thawing at the first-stage load, i.e., instantaneous, attenuated, and quasi-stable sections. During the second-stage loading, the deformation of post-thawed soils is closely correlated with the dissipation of pore water pressure. Two characteristic indexes were obtained including thaw-settlement coefficient and critical water content. The critical water content increases positively with salt content. The higher water content of soil leads to a larger thaw-settlement coefficient, especially at higher salt contents, based on which an empirical equation was proposed and verified. The normalized pore water pressure during thawing was found to dissipate slower at higher salt contents, with a longer duration to stabilize. Three physical indexes were experimentally determined such as freezing point, heat conductivity and water permeability. The freezing point decreases at higher salt contents, especially as more water is involved, like the changes in heat conductivity. The water permeability maintains within the same order at the considered range of salt contents, like the development of the coefficient of consolidation. The variation of the pore volume distribution also accounts for this.

  • It is critical for Korea to make effective use of limited space as it has dense population and high traffic volume compared to its terrestrial area. To resolve this issue, diverse types of underground structures have increasingly been applied so far, and one of the most representative structures is double-deck tunnel. The construction period of the middle slab in the double deck tunnel constructed at the great depth can be considered as an important part after the tunnel lining construction in the whole process. In order to minimize the construction period required for construction of the middle slab in the double deck tunnel, it was proposed a method of the precast intermediate slab. In this study, it is suggested a mechanical construction process with dedicated equipments developed to improve the safety and the workability of erection of the precast middle slab than the current construction method using the existing mobile crane.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the continuous forms of time and space that work as architectural design principles of the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe (Jewish Memorial). Continuity is divided into two, physical and non-physical attributes. The former extends from small installations to furnitures, finishes, spatial composition, and even spatial networks that complete architecture, and the latter is tied to time, from traditional to historical, developmental, commemorative or memorial elements. They are inherent in architecture as continuous forms. The Jewish Memorial is analyzed by the analysing framework of these two items. The analysis of the two layers can be summarized as follows; physical continuity is found in the space networks of the Memorial's inside and outside, the undulating spaces, the finishes, the small furnitures and installations, the entrances of staircases, the expanded underground of the ground order, and non-physical continuity manifests in the topological variation of spatiality, the morphological development of memorial architecture, the connection of semantic sense of space, and the superposition of historicity and modernity. These forms of continuity do not aestheticize the German enormity history, but make the meaning of the Memorial into non-superficial, in-depth architecture as a monument. Thus, the results of this study show that physical and non-physical continuity should be considered as the important design principles of architecture that makes the Memorial architecture possible.

  • Recently, large and deep excavations are increasing. The damage of adjacent structures due to excavation has steadily increased with increasing construction demand. Especially in urban development and poor conditions, the excavation adjacent to the subway structures has caused a lot of problems. This paper was reviewed that the underground excavation and reinforcement of the status process through a case study on the field. And stability analysis through the case study evaluates applicability for reasonable reinforcement method by numerical analysis. As a result, the strata distribution condition of all 16 sites consisted of landfill from the top and distributed in the order of deposits, weathered soils, weak rock from the bottom. Also, when proceeding the excavation adjacent to structures, the location of site and layer conditions have highly effect on the results of the construction. Therefore, this study was applied reinforcement method to protect damage by excavation. Displacement and settlement were within allowable criterion and hence, stability of structure was analyzed as safe.

  • Recently, a concept of the downtown area was progressively extended by improvement of rapid transportation system and development of the most advanced telecommunication industries. And underground has become bigger in addition deeper, Excavation methods which construct a structure were changed according to construction environments. Top Down methods which are continuous with architectural plan differ from existing excavation methods innovatively, pre-founded column is an important factor for construction methods, duration, expenses. Therefore, this study considers application by investigative methods according to comparison, analysis on loading test result of on site inspection and estimated results of bearing capacity for structure pre-founded column. As a result, almost designing eclipse appeared prior value which didn't arrive result of load test. Also, evaluate permanent load for the compressive stress acting on head of cast-in-place after basic structure was installed. Then, applying stress generally is reduced by confining effect with foundation.

  • Water Distribution Networks, one of the social infrastructures buried underground, has the function of transporting and supplying purified water to customers. In recent years, as measurement capability is improved, a number of studies related to leak recognition and detection by applying a deep learning technique based on flow rate data have been conducted. In this study, a cognitive model for leak occurrence was developed using an LSTM-based deep learning algorithm that has not been applied to the waterworks field until now. The model was verified based on the assumed data, and it was found that all cases of leaks of 2% or more can be recognized. In the future, based on the proposed model, it is believed that more precise results can be derived in the prediction of flow data.

  • This study developed applications that allows truck drivers to record ore production data using smart devices at mine sites and to create a daily work report (operation report) in a PC environment. For this, four operating mines in Korea were selected as study areas, and daily work reports used there were investigated. The information elements included in the daily work report of each mine were analyzed. Because the information to be collected for writing ore production data and format of report are different for each mine, four types of applications were developed for the study areas. Ore production data could be recorded by receiving a signal from a Bluetooth beacon and by operating the application directly by the truck driver. The collected data files are uploaded to the cloud server, and the uploaded data files can be converted into a daily work report using the developed applications in a PC environment.

  • Among human-induced seismicity, fluid production has been one of the causes. In this report, the mechanism that causes an earthquake due to a decrease in the fluid pressure inside the reservoir during fluid extraction is summarized. As case studies, the Lacq gas field in France, the Cerro Prieto geothermal field in Mexico, and the Groningen gas field in the Netherlands, which have become issue recently, were introduced. It is showed that fluid production, ground subsidence, and the presence of existing faults were closely related with the induced seismicity. Therefore, for the development of oil or gas field and geothermal field, it is important to investigate the presence of faults that may cause earthquakes in the reservoir, to monitor ground subsidence during production in real time, and to control production.
