  • The Anterior surface and posterior surface of rigid gas permeable(RGP) contact lenses has been studied by scanning electron microscopy. Results point out that the ultrastructure of contact lenses surface was some different on the anterior and posterior surface of RGP. The Quantitative study of surface roughness suggest that the anterior surface was more smooth than the posterior surface. These results suggest that the materials characters appeared the contact lens surface. The morphology of the anterior and posterior surface have different, Maybe, these result have a manufacture processing of the contact lenses. But some surface appeared a foreign body particles.

  • The comparative morphology of epididymal spermatozoa in the lesser white-toothed shrew, Crocidura suaveolens, the Japanese white-toothed shrew, C. dsinezumi and the big white-toothed shrew, C. lasiura, belonging to the subfamily Crocidurinae was studied with the light and electron microscopes. The spermatozoa of C. lasiura and C. dsinezumi were characterized by the large acrosome, serrated inner acrosomal membrane, common apical body and fistulous proximal centriole with slightly dense electron granular materials, which are the charateristics of the Crocidurinae. The C. suaveolens, however, is distinguished from the two species mentioned above in the sperm morphology. That is, the spermatozoa possess not only the charateristic of the Crocidurinae such aw the large acrosome, but also those of the Soricinae, i.e. the smooth inner acrosomal membrane, wavy, finger-like and electron-dense apical body, and the solid proximal centriole filled with electron-dense materials. The results suggest that C. suaveolens has conserved characteristics of the Soricinae.

  • Integumentary structures of the chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) were examined by light and transmission electron microscopy. The integument of the fish was composed of epidermal and dermal layers. The epidermal thickness is about $20{\mu}m$ in TL 35~40 cm fish. The epidermal layer could be classified into superficial, intermediate, and basal layers by morphology and position of the supporting cells. The epidermal layer also possessed mucous cells, club cells and chloride cells. The area of secretory cells, including mucous and club cells, is about 23% of the epidermal layer. The mucous materials were identified as sulfated glycoprotein, neutral and acid in nature. Club cells had a large central vacuole and rough endoplasmic reticula in the cytoplasm. Chloride cells had numerous tubular mitochondria in the cytoplasm. The dermal layer consists mainly of collagenous fiber, and it contains fibrocytes, pigment cells and cycloid scales.

  • The progressive differentiation of interfascicular cambium from residual meristem in the first internode of Ginkgo biloba seedlings was elucidated by light and electron microscopy. The cells of residual meristem were small and homogeneous and heterogeneous in their arrangement but those of the adjacent cortex and pith were large and homogeneous. Some interprocambial residual meristem progressively became elongated and vacuolated during the process of the differentiation. In tangential section, residual meristem composed of long and short cells. The eventual interfascicular cambium had long fusiform initials and short ray initials. Storage materials in the cells progressively disappeared from the interprocambial residual meristem and were absent in early interfascicular cambium. Both the radial and tangential walls of cells of the interprocambial residual meristem were almost the same, but the radial wall became progressively thicker than the tangential wall during differentiation of interfascicular cambium. From these results, it is clear that interfascicular cambium is gradually differentiated from residual meristem.

  • We examined the ultrastructure of eupyrene and apyrene spermatogenesis in the testis of Helicoverpa assulta (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). The spermatogenesis was progressed near the fringe adjacent to the follicular layer of the testicular follicle, surrounding the apical cell concentrically. Eupyrene and apyrene were firstly distinguished at the telophase stage of the primary spermatocyte. Chromatin was evenly scattered in eupyrene nuclei, whereas it was lumped near the nuclear envelope in apyrene spermatogenesis. Then, the nucleus of eupyrene was transformed into two daughter nuclei by meiosis, while the nucleus of apyrene was divided into many micronuclei by irregular meiosis. After the meiosis was completed, a number of mitochondria in the cytoplasm of the early spermatids of the eupyrene and the apyrene were fused into one nebenkern. Also, as axial filament was formed due to the elongation of the spermatid, the nebenkern became splitted into mitochondrial derivatives. An acrosome precursor was present only in the eupyrene, attached to nuclear envelope.

  • Neuromuscular junction consist of presynaptic membrane, synaptic cleft and postsynaptic membrane. In the neuromuscular junction, presynaptic membrane is the motor nerve terminal, have many synaptic vesicle. Postsynaptic membrane is the motor end plate of muscle fiber and the most striking structural features are the deep infolding of the sarcolemma. Between the nerve and muscle cells, there is a synaptic cleft of some 50-100nm. This review shows the ultrastructure and function of neuromuscular junction, summarizes the current knowledge.

  • P. carinii is a protozoan which induces an often fatal pneumonitis in a variety of compromised patients. The ultrastructure of P. carinii was studied in a male infant with pneumocystitis pneumonia associated with hypogammaglobulinemia. Four principal structural varieties-small trophozoites, large trophozoites, mature cyst and empty cyst were identified. The ultrastructure of these organisms was similar to the cases previously reported. Relevance of the morphologic findings to the functional aspect were discussed.

  • Anatomical comparison of 3 North American species with commercial name of redcedar was executed to provide taxonomic information for prevention of confusion and establishment of sound business transaction in the wood market. Eastern redcedar (Juniperus virginiana) and southern redcedar (Juniperus silicicola) could not be separated on the basis of microstructure and ultrastructure of wood. Western redcedar (Thuja plicata), however, appeared to be obviously separated from eastern and southern redcedar in a number of microscopic and ultramicroscopic features. Useful features for separating these two groups were intercellular spaces in transverse surface, latewood width, radial intertracheid pitting, warty layer and pits with torus extensions in tracheids, ray composition, nodular end walls in ray parenchyma cells, and cross-field pitting.

  • Spermatogenesis, ultrastructure, and sperm morphology of the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) were investigated with TEM and SEM. C. gigas sperm were primitive consisting of a head midpiece and tail. Sperm size (head and midpiece) was about 1.78 ${\mu}m$. Sperm morphology was similar to a sharp of a small water jar with a rough surface. Sperm had both anterior nuclear fossa (anf) and posterior nuclear fossa (pnf). Acrosome forms had a hat-like shape. The axial rod was projected in front of the acrosome. C. gigas sperm had four large mitochondria in the midpiece.

  • Ultrastructure of inside white part was compared with normal part in Korea Red ginseng by scanning electron microscope. The inside white part was in number and smaller inside of starch particle than those in the normal. The large membranous components in the inside white part seemed to be thinner than those in the normal. Thin membranous components may be related to lower protein content as previously reported. Starch particles in red ginseng were flat and amorphous.
