  • Nanopiezotronics is an emerging area of nanotechnology with a variety of applications that include piezoelectric field-effect transistors and diodes, self-powered nanogenerators and biosystems, and wireless nano/biosensors. By exploiting coupled piezoelectric and semiconducting characteristics, it is possible for nanowires, nanobelts, or nanorods to generate rectifying current and potential under external mechanical energies such as body movement (handling, winding, pushing, and bending) and muscle stretching, vibrations (acoustic and ultrasonic waves), and hydraulic forces (body fluid and blood flow). Fully transparent, flexible (TF) nanogenerators that are operated by external mechanical forces will be presented. By controlling the density of the seed layer for ZnO nanorod growth, transparent ZnO nanorod arrays were grown on ITO/PES films, and a TF conductive electrode was stacked on the ZnO nanorods. The resulting integrated TF nanodevice (having transparency exceeding 70 %) generated a noticeable current when it was pushed by application of an external load. The output current density was clearly dependent on the force applied. Furthermore, the output current density depended strongly on the morphology and the work function of the top electrode. ZnO nanorod-based nanogenerators with a PdAu, ITO, CNT, and graphene top electrodes gave output current densities of approximately $1-10\;uA/cm^2$ at a load of 0.9 kgf. Our results suggest that our TF nanogenerators are suitable for self-powered TF device applications such as flexible self-powered touch sensors, wearable artificial skins, fully rollable display mobile devices, and battery supplements for wearable cellular phones.

  • In this study, we produced a light, flexible, wearable gas sensor by depositing MWCNTs (Multi-walled Carbon Nanotubes) into nylon. MWCNTs are widely used as a gas sensor material due to their excellent mechanical, electrical and physical characteristics. We produced a gas sensor to detect NOx gases by depositing nylon yarn in a MWCNT solution. The MWCNT solution was made by mixing 3 mg MWCNT in 5 ml of ethanol. Nylon yarn was placed in the manufactured solution and ultrasonic waves were applied using an ultrasonicator for 3 h, resulting in MCWNT deposition. The MWCNT-deposited nylon yarn was dried at room temperature for 24 h. The MWCNT-thin-film-coated nylon yarn was masked 1 mm apart, and gold was then deposited on the masked nylon yarn to create the gas sensor. The sensor then was installed in a chamber with a controlled atmospheric environment and exposed to NOx gas. The changing signal from the sensor was amplified to analyze its gas detection characteristics.

  • Although nanobubbles attract significant attention, their characteristics and applications have not been thoroughly defined. There are diverse opinions about the definition of nanobubbles and controversy regarding methods that verify their characteristics. This study defines nanobubbles as having a size less than $1{\mu}m$. The generation of these sub-micron (nano) bubbles may be verified by induced coalescence or light scattering. The size of a sub-micron (nano) bubbles may be measured by optical, and confocal laser scanning microscopy. Also, the size may be estimated by the relationship of bubble size with the dissolved oxygen concentration. However, further research is required to accurately define the average bubble size. The zeta potential of sub-micron (nano) bubbles decreases as pH increases, and this trend is consistent for micron bubbles. When the bubble size is reduced to about 700-900 nm, they become stationary in water and lose buoyancy. This characteristic means that measuring the concentration of sub-micron (nano) bubbles by volume may be possible by irradiating them with ultrasonic waves, causing them to merge into micron bubbles. As mass transfer is a function of surface area and rising velocity, this strongly indicates that the application of sub-micron (nano) bubbles may significantly increase mass transfer rates in advanced oxidation and aeration processes.

  • Purpose: This study focuses on exploring ways to improve the distribution method of shrimp farming so that it is eco-friendly and increases the distribution of shrimp. Research design, data and methodology: The experimental device installed in a biofloc shrimp culture in one area tested 10 times. Complex odor, concentration of H2S, water quality improvement effected by decomposition of organic substances, and degree of microbial activation measured. The data of the experimental results verified using the T-test technique, and the p value was determined based on the significance probability of 0.05. Results: This experimental device was effective in reducing odor and hydrogen sulfide in shrimp farms. With the improvement of water quality, dissolved oxygen increased due to the microbubble and cavitation action of air ejector and ultrasonic waves. In addition, the cultured microorganisms in the cultured water treated by the experimental device were remarkably proliferated compared to the raw water. Conclusions: The biofloc distribution method has a significant effect on improving water quality and reducing odor substances and will become a new eco-friendly and efficient distribution method for shrimp farming in the future.

  • In this work, the guided wave de-bonding area-detecting technique was studied for application to containment liner plates in nuclear power plant areas. To apply this technique, an appropriate Lamb wave mode, symmetric and longitudinal dominance, was verified by the frequency shifting technique. The S0 2.7 MHz mm Lamb wave mode was chosen to realize quantitative experimental results and their visualization. Results of the bulk wave, longitudinal wave mode, and comparison experiments indicate that the wave mode was able to distinguish between the de-bonded and bonded areas. Similar to the bulk wave cases, the bonded region could be distinguished from the de-bonded region using the Lamb wave approach. The Lamb wave technique results showed significant correlation to the de-bonding area. As the de-bonding area increased, the Lamb wave energy attenuation effect decreased, which was a prominent factor in the realization of quantitative tomographic visualization. The feasibility of tomographic visualization was studied via the application of Lamb waves. The reconstruction algorithm for the probabilistic inspection of damage (RAPID) technique was applied to the containment liner plate to verify and visualize the de-bonding condition. The results obtained using the tomography image indicated that the Lamb wave-based RAPID algorithm was capable of delineating debonding areas.

  • Objective: This study was to investigate the effect of a lumbar stabilization exercise program accompanied by proprioceptive stimulation in women in their 20s with low back pain. Design: A randomized controlled trial Methods: A total of 30 women in their 20s with low back pain were selected and randomly assigned to an experimental group and a control group. Both groups performed a lumbar stabilization exercise program, and only the experimental group applied for a stabilization exercise program with proprioceptive stimulation. The exercise program lasted 60 minutes at a time, 3 times a week, for 4 weeks. The measurement tools used were the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), the Korean version of the Oswestry Disability Index (K-ODI), the lumbar alignment, and the transverse abdominis(TrA) muscle thickness and contraction ratio. Results: Both groups showed statistically significant differences in NRS, K-ODI, and muscle thickness before and after the experiment (p<0.05). The lumbar alignment and contraction ratio at the time of contraction of TrA in the experimental group was statistically significantly increased, and there was also a significant difference in the difference between the two groups (p<0.05). Conclusions: The lumbar stabilization exercise program with proprioceptive stimulation reduced pain, improved low back pain induced dysfunction, and increased TrA muscle thickness and contraction ratio. Therefore, it can be an effective therapeutic exercise program for women in their 20s with LBP.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of traditional Korean medicine treatment of cervical vertigo. Three patients were diagnosed as cervical vertigo with correlating symptoms of imbalance and dizziness with neck pain. The diagnosis of cervical vertigo is also dependent on excluding other vestibular disorders on the basis of history, examination, and vestibular function tests. They were treated by acupuncture, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation therapy and low-intensity pulsed ultrasound at acupoints and sympathetic ganglion chain of their cervical and upper thoracic region. The evaluation of clinical outcome was done by numeric rating scale (NRS), dizziness handicap inventory (DHI) and neck disability index (NDI), EuroQol-five dimensions questionnaire (EQ-5D) index. After the treatment, the value of their NRS, NDI, DHI was significantly decreased and their EQ-5D index was significantly increased. The traditional Korean medicine treatment at cervical and upper thoracic region could be an effective way to treat cervical vertigo.

  • The feasibility of Y(z) curve method of scanning acoustic microscope using high frequency transducer was experimentally studied for assessment of the thermal degradation in Co-based superalloy. Thermal degradation was performed to simulate the microstructural changes in Co-based superalloy arising from long term exposure at high temperature. Longitudinal wave velocity measured by pulse echo method using 10MHz transducer and leaky surface acoustic wave (LSAW) velocity measured by V(z) curve method using 200MHE transducer were measured to investigate the effect on thermal degradation. Ultrasonic velocity decreased as the aging time increased in both ultrasonic waves. Moreover, the low frequency longitudinal wave velocity decreased a little. Otherwise, the high frequency LSAW velocity drastically decreased up to a maximum of 4.7% at the aging time of 4,000hours. A good correlation was found between LSAW and Vickers hardness. Consequently, V(z) curve method of SAM using high frequency transducer could be a potential tool for assessing thermal degradation.

  • Recently, geophysical prospecting methods have played very important roles in civil and environmental engineering problems. Technical advances in geophysical instruments and computer system made it possible to get underground images with very high resolution far purposes to resolve those problems. It was possible partly due to ever increasing demand for development of technologies needed to precisely detect polluted areas and prevent ground-related accidents. Based on the same demand, integrity tests of cast-in place piles draw more attention and development of accurate test procedures is required. Ultrasonic methods is one of most advanced non-destructive procedures. In the paper, a geotomography method is employed for the cast-in place pile integrity test using ultrasonic waves. The image of pile interior is scanned and scrutinized far better and more accurate decision in the cast-in place pile integrity. In this study, we firstly examined the accuracy fur tomography program with idealized synthetic models built in water tank: their position and size were changed in the tank and each case was studied. In the next stage, real concrete pile models were fabricated and images of anomaly areas inside the pile were scanned to successfully locate those areas.
