  • The IEEE 802.15.4a specification targets the low-rate (LR) Impulse-radio (IR) ultra-wideband (UWB) system which is now widely applied in the WPANs considering rather short distance communications with low complexity and power consumption. The physical (PHY) layer uses concatenated coding with mixed binary phase-shift keying and binary pulse-position modulation (BPSK-BPPM), and direct sequence spreading with time hopping in order that both coherent and non-coherent receiver architectures are supported. In this paper, the performances of multiple access schemes compliant with IEEE 802.15.4a specification are investigated with energy detection receiver, which allow avoiding the complex channel estimation needed by a coherent receiver. However, the performance of energy detection receiver is severely degraded by multi-user interference (MUI), which largely diminishes one of the most fascinating advantages of UWB, namely robustness to MUI as well as the possibility to allow parallel transmissions. So as to improve the performance of multiple access schemes, we propose to apply the novel TH sequences as well as to increase the number of TH positions. The simulation results show that our novel multiple access schemes significantly improve the performance against MUI.

  • In this paper we theoretically analyze the probability of error for M-ary pulse position modulation (PPM) ultra-wideband (UWB) multiple access system using Gaussian monopulse. The optimum detection of UWB signals using M-ary orthogonal PPM in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and multiple access interference (MAI) is considered, then receiver signal to noise power ratio (SNR) and upper bound fur the bit error rate (BER) are derived. Numerical results considering some practical parameters are presented.

  • In this paper, We use Antipodal signal for data modulation of Ultra Wideband(UWB) system. This has maximum Euclidean distance and -1 or 0 of correlation values. With adapting this signal to M-ary that and time hopped pattern, We designed multiple access system. UWB Antipodal signal employes Gaussian monopulse and Rayleigh monopulse. Using these signals, we analysis and compare error probability, the number of user and data rate of the two systems under the AWGN.

  • In this paper we proposed system parameter values of ultra-wideband Impulse Radio systems for the frequency band(3.1~10.6GHz), which is allocated by Federal Communications Commission(FCC). We also analyzed performance of the proposed system in the multiple access interference environment. According to result, application of possible pulse duration($t_{n}$) is very limited by 0.04~0.0326 ns in permission frequency range that establish in FCC. In the case of the same pulse signal power, we could know that system performance was changed by pulse repetition number($N_{s}$ ) regardless of pulse duration. Thus, We could know that we have to need duration of monocycle pulse and setting of frame un it time(Τ$_{f}$ ) according to multi user numbers and design proper pulse repetition number by transfer rate in multiple access systems design. In the IR system that needs high speed transmission more than 50 Mbps in multiple access interference environment, we could know that very serious performance decrease by multiple access interference happens. Therefore, as the design of high speed multiple access IR system, it should be designed to additional improvement techniques that can remove multiple access interference at the same time.

  • A new form of spread spectrum technique called the ultra wideband impulse radio (UWB-IR) system has drawn much attention for future high speed wireless communication services. In this paper, a new type of time hopping sequences constructed from multiple distinct m-sequences of the same order, is proposed for multiple access in the UWB-IR systems. Simulation results reveal that the proposed time hopping sequences achieve comparable or even better bit error rate performance than the ideal random sequences, and can be effectively applied in various multiple access situations.

  • The rapid proliferation of in-home and office information applications and services is driving the need for new wireless technologies enabling wideband short range multimedia communications. Due to the growing demand for higher quality media and faster wireless connections, several IEEE standardization groups are considering very high data rate alternatives physical layer(s) for Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN). The Ultra Wide Band (UWB) multiple access technology based on very narrow pulse transmission, is one viable candidate for these applications providing very high bit rates services, low power consumption and accurate positioning capability. In this paper we provide a methodology to evaluate the UWB system BER performance in UWB wireless fading networks with power controlled UWB devices are considered. Results can be used to analyze the performance of a given network topology and to provide useful design ideas for an UWB home sensor network.

  • In this paper, we propose and analyze M-ary pulse order time hopping multiple access ultra wideband (PO-THMA UWB) system using modified Hermite polynomial (MHP). The MHP pulses have a mutually orthogonal property between different ordered pulses and that property makes simultaneous transmission at the same time slot regardless of collision in the THMA-UWB system. Therefore, we derive the cross-correlation furlction of MHP pulses and analyze the BER of the proposed system and show that the BER performance and the transmission capacity are improved dramatically when compared with those of conventional THMA-UWB system.

  • This paper investigates the performance of M-ary pulse position modulation (PPM) multiuser ultra-wideband (UWB) communication systems in terms of symbol error rate (SER) over fading and additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. Based on Gaussian approximation for the multiple access interference, an expression for the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is derived for the UWB system. This expression is used to derive exact SER expressions for coherent UWB receivers. The effect of pulse selection on the SER of multiuser UWB system is studied. In addition to rectangular pulse, the 2nd derivative Gaussian waveform and Rayleigh pulses were considered. We show that the system capacity and/or SER performance can be significantly increased by using the monocycle pulse in fading channels.

  • Direct-sequence ultra-wideband(DS-UWB) system is being considered as one of promising transmission technologies for wireless personal area networks(WPANs). Due to relatively low spreading factors and huge bandwidth of transmit signal, a DS-UWB receiver needs to be equipped not only with a rake receiver but also with an equalizer, of which the equalizer is not required for traditional direct-sequence code division multiple access(DS-CDMA) systems. The number of rake fingers is limited in practice, influencing the performance of the subsequent equalizer. In this paper, we derive a decision feedback equalizer(DFE) for DS-UWB systems based on the minimum mean square error(MMSE) criterion, and investigate the impact of various parameters on the DFE performance in realistic scenarios. In particular, we propose an approach to improving the performance of the DFE using additional channel estimates for multipaths not combined in the rake receiver, and discuss how the accuracy of channel estimation affects desirable DFE configuration. Moreover, we present simulation results that show the impact of turbo equalization on the DFE performance.
