In this paper, a method is presented for estimating the bearing capacity of shallow foundations based on the Discrete Element Method (DEM). By applying Winkler-springs for accounting for the compatibility between soil blocks, the proposed method can estimate the state of stress at failure surface and the ultimate bearing capacity. For the investigation of the application of the method, example problems about shallow foundations on the single layer and two layers soil are analyzed.
The utilization of geopolymer recycled aggregate concrete (GRAC) as the infilled core of the concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns provides superior economic and environmental benefits. However, limited research exists within the field of geopolymer recycled aggregate concrete considered a green and sustainable material, in addition to the limitation of the design guidelines to predict the behavior of such an innovative new material combination. Moreover, the behavior of high-strength concrete is different from the normal-strength one, especially when there is another material of high-strength properties, such as the steel tube. This paper aims to investigate the behavior of the axially loaded square high-strength GRACFST columns through the nonlinear finite element analysis (NLFEA). A total of thirty-two specimens were simulated using ABAQUS/Standard software with three main variables: recycled aggregate replacement ratio (0, 30, and 50) %, width-to-thickness ratios (52.0, 32.0, 23.4, and 18.7), and length-to-width ratio (3, 5, 9, and 12). During the analysis, the response in terms of the axial load versus the longitudinal strain was recorded and plotted. In addition, various mechanical properties were calculated and analyzed. In view of the results, it has been demonstrated that the mechanical properties of high-strength GRACFST columns such as ultimate load-bearing capacity, compressive stiffness, energy absorption capacity, and ductility increase with the increase of the steel tube thickness owing to the improvement of the confinement effect of the steel tube. In contrast, the incorporation of the recycled aggregate adversely affected the mentioned properties except the ductility, while the increase of the recycled aggregate replacement ratio improved the column's ductility. Moreover, it has been found that the increase in the length-to-width ratio significantly reduced both the failure strain and the energy absorption capacity. Finally, the obtained NLFEA results of the ultimate load-bearing capacity were compared with the corresponding predicted capacities by numerous codes. It has been concluded that AISC, ACI, and EC give conservative predictions for the ultimate load-bearing capacity since the confinement effect was not considered by these codes.
This paper presents a combined numerical, experimental, and theoretical study on the behavior of the concrete-filled double circular steel tubular (CFDT) stub columns under axial compressive loading. Four groups of stub column specimens were tested in this study to find out the effects of the concrete strength, steel ratio and diameter ratio on the mechanical behavior of CFDT stub columns. Nonlinear finite element (FE) models were also established to study the stresses of different components in the CFDT stub columns. The change of axial and transverse stresses in the internal and external steel tubes, as well as the change of axial stress in the concrete sandwich and concrete core, respectively, was thoroughly investigated for different CFDT stub columns with the same steel ratio. The influence of inner-to-outer diameter ratio and steel ratio on the ultimate bearing capacity of CFDT stub columns was identified, and a reasonable section configuration with proper inner-to-outer diameter ratio and steel ratio was proposed. Furthermore, a practical formula for predicting the ultimate bearing capacity was proposed based on the ultimate equilibrium principle. The predicted results showed satisfactory agreement with both experimental and numerical results, indicating that the proposed formula is applicable for design purposes.

In this study, static end loading tests with load transfer measurement were accomplished for large diameter drilled shaft constructed in fault zone. Yield pile capacity (or ultimate pile capacity) from load-settlement curve was determined and axial load transfer behavior was measurd. The end bearing capacity was increased 2 times due to grouting the toe ground under pile base.
In this study, the resistance bias factors are calculated to determine the resistance factor of Gravel Compaction Piles which is one of the soft ground improvement methods. In order to calculate resistance bias factors for gravel compaction piles, two ultimate bearing capacities were analyzed. One is the ultimate bearing capacity in 2.54 cm settlement measured using data of the field loading test on 41 piles and the other is the ultimate bearing capacity calculated using the seven equations concerning bulging failure. The results of analysis show that the probability density function of the calculated ultimate bearing capacities has a lognormal distribution. Resistance bias factor and the coefficient of variation for Greenwood equation are 0.91 and 0.38, respectively, and for those of Hughes & Withers are 1.19 and 0.39. The two equations are suitable for calculating resistance factors for LRFD of soil improvement using gravel compaction piles.
To achieve a rational detail of the girder-abutment joints in composite integral bridges, and validate the performance of the joints with perfobond connectors, this paper proposes two innovative types of I-shaped steel girder-concrete abutment joints with perfobond connectors intended for the most of bearing capacity and the convenience of concrete pouring. The major difference between the two joints is the presence of the top flange inside the abutments. Two scaled models were investigated with tests and finite element method, and the damage mechanism was revealed. Results show that the joints meet design requirements no matter the top flange exists or not. Compared to the joint without top flange, the initial stiffness of the one with top flange is higher by 7%, and the strength is higher by 50%. The moment decreases linearly in both types of the joints. At design loads, perfobond connectors take about 70% and 50% of the external moment with and without top flange respectively, while at ultimate loads, perfobond connectors take 53% and 26% of the external moment respectively. The ultimate strengths of the reduced sections are suggested to be taken as the bending strengths of the joints.
In Europe and the United States, the use of limit states design has almost been established for pile foundation design. According to the global trend, the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs has established the basic design criteria of the bridge under the limit state design method. However, it is difficult to reflect on the design right now because of lack of research on resistance coefficient of the pile method and ground condition. In this study, to obtain the resistance coefficient of PHC bored pile which is widely used in Korea, the bearing capacity calculated by the LH design standard and the bridge design standard method, the static load test(21 times) and the dynamic load test(EOID 21 times, Restrike 21) The reliability analysis was performed on the results. The analysis of the resistance coefficient of PHC bored pile by loading test was analyzed by adding more than two times data. As a result, the resistance coefficient obtained from the static load test(ultimate bearing capacity) was 0.64 ~ 0.83 according to the design formula and the target reliability index, and the resistance coefficient obtained from the dynamic load test(ultimate bearing capacity) was 0.42~0.55. Respectively. The resistance coefficient obtained from the modified bearing capacity of dynamic load test(EOID's ultimate end bearing capacity + restrike's ultimate skin bearing capacity) was 0.55~0.71, which was reduced to about 14% when compared with the resistance coefficient obtained by the static load test(ultimate bearing capacity). As a result of the addition of the data, the resistivity coefficient was not changed significantly, even if the data were increased more than 2 times by the same value or 0.04 as the previous resistance coefficient. In conclusion, the overall resistance coefficient calculated by the static load test and dynamic load tests in this study is larger than the resistance coefficient of 0.3 suggested by the bridge design standard(2015).

Elastomeric bearing is used as one of the most useful way for isolation structures, because the horizontal stiffness is much lower than the vertical stiffness. In the design criteria of Elastomeric bearing, the stability of the bearings is evaluated by shear strain due to compression, lateral displacement, and rotation. The question how soft rubber can sustain heavy structure is now able to be solved by Ultimate capacity test of Laminated Elastomeric Bearings, which results 1,200kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ of the max. compressive stress and this shows what a sufficient safety factor Elastomeric bearing has !

The use of pile foundations has become more popular in recent years, as the combined action of the pile cap and the piles can increase the bearing capacity, reduce settlement, and the piles can be arranged so as to reduce differential deflection in the pile cap. Piles are relatively long, slender members that transmit foundation loads through soil strata of low bearing capacity to deeper soil or rock strata having a high bearing capacity. In this study analysis of pile cap with considering different parameters like depth of the pile cap, width and breadth of the pile cap, type of piles and different types of soil which affect the behaviour of pile cap foundation is carried out by using Finite Element Software ANSYS. For understanding the settlement behaviour of pile cap foundation, parametric studies have been carried out in four types of clay by varying pile cap dimensions with two types of piles namely normal and under-reamed piles for different group of piles. Furthermore, the analysis results of settlement and stress values for the pile cap with normal and under-reamed piles are compared. From the study it can be concluded that settlement values of pile cap with under-reamed pile are less than the settlements of pile cap with normal pile. It means that the ultimate load bearing capacity of pile cap with under-reamed piles are greater than the pile cap with normal piles.

This paper estimates the bearing capacity of the eccentrically loaded footing by the upper bound of limit analysis method. Meyerhof method and Saran method used the limit equilibrium method in the estimation of bearing capacity. But, in this study the bearing capacity is estimated by the upper bound method. In applying the upper bound, the result depends on the failure mechanism. So this analysis uses the conventional failure mechanisms or the modified failure mechanisms. The comparisions are made between the results from this analysis and those obtained from the limit equilibrium method. Also, the influences of the parameters-eccentricity, internal friction angle, surcharge, G-value, and base friction of the footing on the bearing capacity factors have been examined.
