  • The failure of reinforced concrete structures in recent earthquakes caused concern about the performance of beam column joints. Confinement of joint is one of the ways to improve the performance of beam column joints during earthquakes. This paper describes an experimental study of exterior beam-column joints with two non-conventional reinforcement arrangements. One exterior beam-column joint of a six story building in seismic zone III of India was designed for earthquake loading. The transverse reinforcement of the joint assemblages were detailed as per IS 13920:1993 and IS 456:2000 respectively. The proposed nonconventional reinforcement was provided in the form of diagonal reinforcement on the faces of the joint, as a replacement of stirrups in the joint region for joints detailed as per IS 13920 and as additional reinforcement for joints detailed as per IS 456. These newly proposed detailing have the basic advantage of reducing the reinforcement congestion at the joint region. In order to study and compare the performance of joint with different detailing, four types of one-third scale specimens were cast (two numbers in each type). The main objective of the present study is to investigate the effectiveness of the proposed reinforcement detailing. All the specimens were tested under reverse cyclic loading, with appropriate axial load. From the test results, it was found that the beam-column joint having confining reinforcement as per IS: 456 with nonconventional detailing performed well. Test results indicate that the non-conventionally detailed specimens, Type 2 and Type 4 have an improvement in average ductility of 16% and 119% than their conventionally detailed counter parts (Type1 and Type 3). Further, the joint shear capacity of the Type 2 and Type 4 specimens are improved by 8.4% and 15.6% than the corresponding specimens of Type 1 and Type 3 respectively. The present study proposes a closed form expression to compute the yield and ultimate load of the system. This is accomplished using the theory of statics and the failure pattern observed during testing. Good correlation is found between the theoretical and experimental results.

  • The factor affecting on the fatigue strength of spot welded specimen have been studied. To analyze and predict crack initiation position and propagation directions on the spot welded area are very important for strength design of the automobile body structure. In fact, there are a various of loads in running automobile but, it is impossible to replay like an actual conditions in the laboratory. So, in this study tensile-shear type and in-plane bending type specimens were used in fatigue test and includes an analysis of fatigue crack initiation position and propagation directions about earth specimens. The results obtained in the present study are summarized as follows: 1. In tensile-shear type fatigue test, the region of fatigue crack initiation position was affected by out-of-plane bending deformation due to bending angle. 2 In in-plane bending type fatigue test, the behavior of fatigue crack initiation position and propagation derections due to angle between upper plate and lower plate was dominated by magnitude of in-plane bending moment.

  • Crossing (X-type) flaws are commonly encountered in rock mass. However, the crack coalescence and failure mechanisms of rock mass with X-type flaws remain unclear. In this study, we investigate the compressive failure process of rock-like specimens containing two X-type flaws aligned in the loading direction. For comparison purposes, compressive failure behavior of specimens containing two aligned single flaws is also studied. By examining the crack coalescence behavior, two characteristics for the aligned X-type flaws under uniaxial compression are revealed. The flaws tend to coalesce by cracks emanating from flaw tips along a potential path that is parallel to the maximum compressive stress direction. The flaws are more likely to coalesce along the coalescence path linked by flaw tips with greater maximum circumferential stress if there are several potential coalescence paths almost parallel to the maximum compressive stress direction. In addition, we find that some of the specimens containing two aligned X-type flaws exhibit higher strengths than that of the specimens containing two single parallel flaws. The two underlying reasons that may influence the strengths of specimens containing two aligned X-type flaws are the values of flaw tips maximum circumferential stresses and maximum shear stresses, as well as the shear crack propagation tendencies of some secondary flaws. The research reported here provides increased understanding of the fundamental nature of rock/rock-like material failure in uniaxial compression.

  • The purpose of this study was to observe the tensile and bonding strength of the joined amalgam restoration. Amalgam alloys of fine-cut (F-type), spherical (S-type), and dispersed type (D-type) were selected in this study, and all specimens were divided into three groups according to the condensation methods as follows. Group I : the control group which condense the same kinds of mixed amalgam into the whole part of the mold respectively. Group II : the group which condense a mix of amalgam into one half of the mold, and then condense a new mix of amalgam into the rest half of the mold 15 minutes later. Group III : the group which condense a mixed amalgam into one half of the mold, and then condense a new mix of amalgam into the rest half of the mold 7 days later. All specimens were stored in incubator at $37{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ for seven days with immersing in saline solution before testing. The tensile and bonding strength of them were measured with Instron Universal Testing machine. The results were as follows: 1. In Group I, the order of tensile strength was F-type, S-type, and D-type. 2. In case of bonding of S-type + S-type, the difference of the bonding strength between Group II and III was not significant. (P> 0.05) 3. The bonding strength of F-type + S-type of Group II was marked the highest in value, and the lowest bonding strength was showed in bonded D-type + D-type of Group III. 4. In case of bonding with the different kinds of amalgam alloy in Group II, the specimen bonded to F-type was marked the highest bonding strength, and the specimen bonded with F-type was marked the lowest one. In Group II, the bonding strength of the specimens bonded with the same kinds of amalgam alloy was presented as the same order as that of Group I. 5. In Group III, the specimen connected with D-type marked the lowest bonding strength of all specimens. In Group III, the bonding strength of the specimens connected with the same kinds of amalgam alloy was the order of S-type + S-type, F-type + F-type, and D-type + D-type.

  • This study aimed to examine whether heat curing methods of concrete subjected to $-10^{\circ}C$ could be effective by varying the combination of heating cable and surface heat insulations. Three different concrete specimens incorporating 30% fly ash with 50% W/B were fabricated to simulate wall, column and slab members with dimensions of $1600{\times}800{\times}200$ mm for slab, $800{\times}600{\times}200$ mm for wall and $800{\times}800{\times}800$ mm for column. For heat curing combinations, Type-1 specimens applied PE film for slab, plywood for wall and column curing. Type-2 specimens applied double layer bubble sheet (2LB) and heating coil for slab, and 50 mm styrofoam for wall and column curing. Type-3 specimen applied 2LB for slab, electrical heating mat for wall and column inside heating enclosure. The test results revealed that the temperature of Type 1 specimen dropped below $0^{\circ}C$ beginning at 48 hours after placement due to its poor heat insulating capability. Type 2 and 3 specimens maintained a temperature of around $5{\sim}10^{\circ}C$ after placement due to favorable heat insulating and thermal resistance.

  • PURPOSE. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of abutment shade, ceramic thickness, and coping type on the final shade of zirconia all-ceramic restorations. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Three different types of disk-shaped zirconia coping specimens (Lava, Cercon, Zirkonzahn: ${\phi}10mm{\times}0.4mm$) were fabricated and veneered with IPS e.max Press Ceram (shade A2), for total thicknesses of 1 and 1.5 mm. A total of sixty zirconia restoration specimens were divided into six groups based on their coping types and thicknesses. The abutment specimens (${\phi}10mm{\times}7mm$) were prepared with gold alloy, base metal (nickel-chromium) alloy, and four different shades (A1, A2, A3, A4) of composite resins. The average $L^*$, $a^*$, $b^*$ values of the zirconia specimens on the six abutment specimens were measured with a dental colorimeter, and the statistical significance in the effects of three variables was analyzed by using repeated measures analysis of variance (${\alpha}$=.05).The average shade difference (${\Delta}E$) values of the zirconia specimens between the A2 composite resin abutment and other abutments were also evaluated. RESULTS. The effects of zirconia specimen thickness (P<.001), abutment shade (P<.001), and type of zirconia copings (P<.003) on the final shade of the zirconia restorations were significant. The average ${\Delta}E$ value of Lava specimens (1 mm) between the A2 composite resin and gold alloy abutments was higher (close to the acceptability threshold of 5.5 ${\Delta}E$) than th ose between the A2 composite resin and other abutments. CONCLUSION. This in-vitro study demonstrated that abutment shade, ceramic thickness, and coping type affected the resulting shade of zirconia restorations.

  • PURPOSE. The study objective was to evaluate the influence of the type of resin cement on the flexural strength and load to fracture of two chairside CADCAM materials after aging. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A polymer-infiltrated ceramic network (PICN) and a nanoceramic resin (RNC) were used to produce the specimens. Two types of dual-cure resin cements, a self-adhesive and a universal, were investigated. Bilayer specimens were produced (n = 10) and aged for 6 months in a humid environment before the biaxial flexural strength test (σf). Bonded specimens were subjected to a mechanical aging protocol (50 N, 2 Hz, 37℃ water, 500,000 cycles) before the compressive load test (Lf). σf and Lf data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey tests (α = .05). Chi-square test was used to analyze the relationship between failure mode and experimental group (α = .05). RESULTS. The type of resin cement and the interaction between factors had no effect on the σf and Lf of the specimens, while the type of restorative material was significant. RNC had higher σf and Lf than PICN. There was a significant association among the type of cracks identified for specimens tested in Lf and the restorative material. CONCLUSION. The type of resin cement had no effect on the flexural strength and load to fracture of the two investigated CAD-CAM chairside materials after aging.

  • Two monstrilloid copepod species belonging to the genus Monstrilla Dana are newly recorded from Korea: M. grandis Giesbrecht, 1891 and M. hamatapex Grygier and Ohtsuka, 1995. Specimens were obtained from inshore waters around the coasts of South Korea, using a light trap installed at quays and wharves overnight. Based on the Korean specimens, the two species are redescribed, with brief accounts of their affinities and morphological variabilities. Remarkable morphological discrepancies are confirmed in female leg 5 of M. grandis between type material from Southern Hemisphere and European and Asian specimens, which raise a strong doubt on their conspecificity. Korean specimens of M. hamatapex well coincide with the type specimens from Japan, except for some variations in the setal armature of leg 5 and antennules. This is the second taxonomic paper on the monstrilloid copepods in Korea, and the genus Monstrilla is newly added to Korean fauna.
