  • The improvement of thermal-hydraulic analysis techniques is essential to ensure the safety and reliability of nuclear power plants. The one-dimensional two-fluid model has been adopted in state-of-the-art thermal-hydraulic system codes. Current constitutive equations used in the system codes reach a mature level. Some exceptions are the partition method of wall friction in the momentum equation of the two-fluid model and the interfacial drag force model for a horizontal two-phase flow. This study is focused on deriving the partition method of wall friction in the momentum equation of the two-fluid model and modeling the interfacial drag force model for a horizontal bubbly flow. The one-dimensional momentum equation in the two-fluid model is derived from the local momentum equation. The derived one-dimensional momentum equation demonstrates that total wall friction should be apportioned to gas and liquid phases based on the phasic volume fraction, which is the same as that used in the SPACE code. The constitutive equations for the interfacial drag force are also identified. Based on the assessments, the Rassame-Hibiki correlation, Hibiki-Ishii correlation, Ishii-Zuber correlation, and Rassame-Hibiki correlation are recommended for computing the distribution parameter, interfacial area concentration, drag coefficient, and relative velocity covariance of a horizontal bubbly flow, respectively.

  • Interaction of blood flow and leaflet behavior in a bileaflet mechanical heart valve was investigated using computational analysis. Blood flows of a Newtonian fluid and a non-Newtonian fluid with Carreau model were modeled as pulsatile, laminar, and incompressible. A finite volume computational fluid dynamics code and a finite element structure dynamics code were used concurrently to solve the flow and structure equations, respectively, where the two equations were strongly coupled. Physiologic ventricular and aortic pressure waveforms were used as flow boundary conditions. Flow fields, leaflet behaviors, and shear stresses with time were obtained for Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluid cases. At the fully opened phase three jets through the leaflets were found and large vortices were present in the sinus area. At the very final stage of the closing phase, the angular velocity of the leaflet was enormously large. Large shear stress was found on leaflet tips and in the orifice region between two leaflets at the final stage of closing phase. This method using fluid-structure interaction turned out to be a useful tool to analyze the different designs of existing and future bileaflet valves.

  • This paper presents Lattice-Boltzmann simulation techniques for single-phase and two-phase fluid flow in porous media. Numerical experiments were performed in a digital rock sample from X-ray microtomography. Computed results showed very good agreement with laboratory measurements of permeability and relative permeability. Two applications using these simulation techniques show the potential of the Lattice-Boltzmann flow simulation to solve many difficult problems coupled with fluid flow in porous media.

  • We developed an upwind numerical formulation based on the eigenvalues of the approximate Jacobian matrix in order to solve the hyperbolic conservation laws governing the two-fluid two-phase flow models. We obtained eight analytic eigenvalues in the two dimensions that can be used for estimate of the wave speeds essential in constructing an upwind numerical method. Two-dimensional underwater cavitation in a flow past structural shapes or by underwater explosion can be solved using this method. We present quantitative prediction of cavitation for the water tunnel wall and airfoils that has both experimental data as well as numerical results by other numerical methods and models.

  • Interfacial pressure jump terms based on the physics of phasic interface and bubble dynamics are introduced into the momentum equations of the two-fluid model for bubbly flow. The pressure discontinuity across the phasic interface due to the surface tension force is expressed as the function of fluid bulk moduli and bubble radius. The consequence is that we obtain from the system of equations the real eigenvalues representing the void-fraction propagation speed and the pressure wave speed in terms of the bubble diameter. Inversely, we obtain an analytic closure relation for the radius of bubbles in the bubbly flow by using the kinematic wave speed given empirically in the literature. It is remarkable to see that the present mechanistic model using this practical bubble radius can indeed represent both the mathematical well-posedness and the physical wave speeds in the bubbly flow.

  • Many researchers have investigated the blood flow characteristics through bileaflet mechanical heart valves using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models. Their numerical approach methods can be classified into three types; steady flow analysis, pulsatile flow analysis with fixed leaflets, and pulsatile flow analysis with moving leaflets. The first and second methods have been generally employed for two-dimensional and three-dimensional calculations. The pulsatile flow analysis interacted with moving leaflets has been recently introduced and tried only in two-dimensional analysis because this approach method has difficulty in considering simultaneously two physics of blood flow and leaflet behavior interacted with blood flow. In this publication, numerical calculation for pulsatile flow with moving leaflets using a fluid-structure interaction method has been performed in a three-dimensional geometry. Also, pulsatile flow with fixed leaflets has been analyzed for comparison with the case with moving leaflets. The calculated results using the fluid-structure interaction model have shown good agreements with results visualized by previous experiments. In peak systole. calculations with the two approach methods have predicted similar flow fields. However, the model with fixed leaflets has not been able to predict the flow fields during opening and closing phases. Therefore, the model with moving leaflets is rigorously required for advanced analysis of flow fields.

  • We study the isothermal flow of a dusty viscous incompressible conducting fluid between two types of boundary motions- oscillatory and non-oscillatory, under the influence of gravitational force. Within the frame work of some physically realistic approximations and suitable boundary conditions, closed form solutions were obtained for the velocity profiles and the skin friction of the particulate flow. These results show that for a constant pressure gradient, only the velocity profile of the fluid and the skin friction are unaffected by gravity, while magnetic field is seen to affect both the fluid, particle velocities and the skin friction. Thus, our results are extension of previous results in literature, and graphical demonstration of some these solutions have been presented.

  • Drag reduction in polymer solutions is the phenomenon where by extremely dilute solutions of high molecular weight polymers exhibit frictional resistance to flow much lower than the pure solvent. This effect, largely unexplained as yet, has attracted the attention of polymer scientists and fluid flow specialists. Although applications are beginning to appear, the principle interest to data has been in attempting to relate the effect to the fluid mechanics of turbulent flow. Drag reduction in two phase flow can be applied to the transport of crude oil, phase change system such as chemical reactor, and pool and boiling flow. But the research on drag reduction in two phase flow is not intensively investigated. Therefore, experimental investigations have been carried out to analyze the drag reduction produced by polymer addition in the single phase and two phase flow system. The objectives of the proposed investigation are primarily in identifying and developing high performance polymer additives for fluid transportations with the benefits of turbulent drag. Also we want to is to evaluate the drag reduction in horizontal flow by measuring pressure drop and mean velocity. Experimental results show higher drag reduction using co - polymer(A611P) then using polyacrylamide (PAAM) and faster degradation using PAAM than using A611P under the same superficial velocity.

  • The objective of this study is to simulate the flow in pipes with various boundary conditions. Free-pressure fluid model, is used in the pipe based on Navier-Stokes equation. The models are solved by using the numerical method. A problem called "stability of pipes" is used in order to compare frequency and critical fluid velocity. When the initial conditions of problem satisfied the instability conditions, the free-pressure model could accurately predict discontinuities in the solution field. Employing nonlinear strains-displacements, stress-strain energy method the governing equations were derived using Hamilton's principal. Differential quadrature method (DQM) is used for obtaining the frequency and critical fluid velocity. The results of this paper are analyzed by hyperbolic numerical method. Results show that the level of numerical diffusion in the solution field and the range of well-posedness are two important criteria for selecting the two-fluid models. The solutions for predicting the flow variables is approximately equal to the two-pressure model 2. Therefore, the predicted pressure changes profile in the two-pressure model is more consistent with actual physics. Therefore, in numerical modeling of gas-liquid two-phase flows in the vertical pipe, the present model can be applied.

  • In this study, experimental and numerical analyses are carried out to investigate the performance of centrifugal pump with various air admitting conditions. Experiments on the pump performance under air-water two-phase flow are accomplished using a centrifugal pump with semi-open type impeller having three, five and seven blades, respectively. Also, the numerical analysis of turbulent air-water two-phase flow using the finite volume method has been carried out to obtain the pressure, velocities and void fraction on the basis of a so-called bubbly flow model with the constant size and shape of cavity. The results obtained through this study show the reasonable agreements within the range of bubbly flow regime. There are promising developments concerning application of the present study for the flow in a centrifugal pump with two-phase flow conditions and efforts must be followed to improve the turbulence model and two-phase flow model for turbomachinery.
